Why do vegetarians always have to defend their choice to not eat meat?!

Question: Why do people assume that vegetarians don't eat meat because they are against animal testing? don't get me wrong most vegetarians are, but that may not be the reason they have chosen not to eat meat maybe just maybe *shock horror* we just don't want to eat meat!

we're not all hippy dippy only eat carrot types.

Exactly. I don't think people should be defined by what they eat. It's so stupid. There are more important things in the world than a freak, sexually abused cow. My, freaking God. I'm a veg, but I don't freak out about people who eat meat. I am a veg because I feel sorry for the animals, but I don't stress my diet and call myself healthier than everyone, and shove unjust statements in people's faces like one scenario:
Someone: You're a hippy
Me: And you're going to die becuase you're eating cancerous meats.
I don't say that crap because I know not all meat causes that. It's the red meat. It's so stupid that people worry about one everyone else eats instead of worrying about bigger issues. Maybe once we take care of the bigger issues, than we can worry about these minor ones.

I don't think you should have to defend yourself at all - what you eat and the reasons for it are totally your choice! Just like I shouldn't have to argue my right to eat meat...it shouldn't matter to anyone else what someone chooses to eat.

I was a vegetarian for about 4 years and I didn't really care much what other people thought about it. No one really gave me a hard time...sure I was teased a little by like my family, but no biggie.

haha, thank you!! very true. But I went vegetarian mostly for health. I was a chubby meat eating child, then I cut out meat at 8 years old, and I got real skinny. But I've never looked back.

Veggies & Vegans rule. Oh yeah! =0)

good point, its the fanatics that try to preach to everyone that give people a bad impression

Vegetarians are few and far between. Most are spoiled kids looking for a way to attract attention to themselves with out putting forth any effort. Some people have an insatiable appetite for attention and will go to any length to capture it. This is caused by doting parents who did not have a clue regarding how to raise a confident, well adjusted child to adulthood.

I think part of the problem is that originally, most vegetarians were the "hippy dippy, only eat carrot types". I also think that perception is changing and I wonder if people ask simply because they are curious as to what made you decide (maybe they are thinking of it too!), as opposed to trying to make you defend your choice.

If anything, the interesting thing is that the pendulum now is starting to swing the other way. In the presence of veggies, it's now meat eaters increasingly who are defending their diet. Especially so since knowledge is now more and more widespread about the benefits of veggie diets to health generally, the environment, ethically and so on.

The increase in many veggie foods for example, is from meat eaters takigng time out from a meat diet, rather than increaded sales to vegetarians. Good on those who've been buying the veggie burgers as opposed to the Big Mac. You're making a difference.

You're right: although i like em, nobody only wants to eat carrots!

i think those vegetarians are a bunch of freaks!

not being offensive but raising children vegetarian is "wrong" you are making their lifestyle choice for them...sure you may give them the choice.....but if you were told blue is amazing and red is evil...then for your birthday you get a car and get to choose blue or red...what are you going to pick....you need to raise them omnivorous...not for their health...but so they can make the decision themselves

since the beginning of time it is a proven fact that humans need meat of some kind... fish, eggs, chicken or beef to be healthy. you can decline on chicken and beef and such but almost all vegetarians eat eggs and fish. HYPOCRITES, IT'S MEAT and EMBRYOS

i agree entirely. I just started not eating meat a few months ago. I did it because of animal cruelty and because I could get my nutrition in less fatty ways. But every time I try to justify myself to people who do eat meat, I get the same old "It's the circle of life, god put animals on this earth to be eaten"

My friend who is vegetarian just doesn't like meat, and also grew up on a farm where she had to watch animals be killed. It makes her sick to eat meat.

I am considered a little hippy. But I really do feel opinionated and good about my no meat life style. I don't ask other people why they eat meat, because I know they'll all say the same. And try to justifty themselves

People will always assume that about veg's, you've just gotta forget them and do as you please.
