Calling all vegetarians/vegans! Help a starter out?!
Answers: I just read Skinny ***** by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. They convinced me to become a vegan. Before this book I didnt even realize what i was putting into my mouth! But, im not out of the house yet, and my mom doesnt like to make seperate meals for me. Any suggestions for meals for the whole family (with meat) where i could just pick it out and still enjoy the meatless part?
Ask your mother to please set a bit of food aside for you before she adds the meat to a dish. My mother does this for me with no problems.
Also, get used to either preparing your own meals or pop a vegetarian meal into the microwave. There are some great vegetarian frozen foods in every major supermarket chain.
Picking the meat out won't work, because you're still ingesting the animal's fats, gluten, etc.
Don't turn your decision into a big deal. The quieter you are about it, the quicker your mother and others will accept and respect it.
look up Indian recipes. they have tons of veg options.
Get a job, buy your own food.
Congratulations for becoming a veggie!!! You know, there are loads of yummie products today to replace meat and protein, you could e.g. just replace the meat part with soy/ tofu... in health stores or even supermarkets, you'll find a huge selection. Surely that wouldn't be too much extra work.... you could fry or cook it yourself if your mom doesn't want to though. Or you could just pick out the "side dishes", like potatoes, pasta or rice, together with vegetables, maybe a nice sauce. Filled peppers is a nice meal too, your mom could just fill yours with rice and vegetables, e.g. peas and carrots). Chinese food is good too, I think. They use a lot of vegetables and rice. Enjoy!
aww bless you to be a true vegatarian/ vegan you cannot eat food that has had meat in it you would still get the meat juices etc when cooking these meals you even use different cutlery to the meat 1s can you prehaps cook some yourself? or just have the same meals but instead of what they have as meat have something veggie in the place of it ? like stuffed mushroom or pepper ? thres so many other sustitutes out there you can still have the other things they have just have something in the place of the meat product goodluck and takecare :0)
Congrats on becoming a Vegan!!
But anyways I have the same problem, and my family eats a lot of meat... I usually just ask my mom to make the meat on the side, like for spaghetti she will make the meatballs on the side. So just ask your momma to put the meat on the side and you should be OK.
hi if your mom does a pasta dish, ask her to take come sauce out of the pan before she adds the meat, you can have veggie sausages and burgers in place of meat ones.
when my mum does a roast i always have just the veggies and potatoes(cooked in olive oil) and mum always has vegan gravy granules for me!
your mom might have to buy some veggie food for you but you should be able to still have your meals with your family,
wish you good luck! :)x
Congrats,
Some tips:
- ask/discuss with your folks first
- stay in contact with other vegans for moral support. I love YA for that.
- buy or borrow a great vegan cook book
- experiment with ingredients and learn to cook for yourself
- do lots of research and reading. I liked Peter Singer's - The Ethics of What We Eat or Animal Factories.
- don't get too worried if you fall of the wagon. just get back on & do your best. we're only human and we make mistakes some times.
Good luck =0)
spaghetti.. just have her use a meatless sauce and make meatballs in a separate pan, not mixed with the meatless sauce.. not really any extra work on her part..
learn to cook yourself.. if you help in the kitchen, you can have more "different" food without causing her any extra work.. and cooking is FUN!!!
When I stopped eating meat when I was in high school I simply ate the rest of the meal, skipping the meat, and sometimes adding beans or some other additional protein to compensate for not eating the meat. If we had meatloaf, baked potato, veggie and salad I would eat all but the meatloaf and then might have some baked beans to sub for the meatloaf or add some chunks of cheese or egg or walnuts to the salad (if you are doing lacto ovo vegetarian). You can buy yourself some meat substitute frozen products and cook those up yourself and then still eat all the side dishes with your family. Those aren't my favorites but since other dishes might require more cooking than you are able to do, it's a decent option.
I am a Skinny B**** vegan too! I have the same problem, my family are still omnivores. I have been able to convince them to have 2-3 vegan meals with me a week. Those meals, I try to leave out things that might scare them (ie: tofu). I usually prepare pasta primavera, or stir fry, something of that nature.
As for the other meals, those I buy and make on my own. I do work full time so I don't find buying my food too difficult. Living at home I save myself rent money. There are alot of convenience foods as well if you are not much of a cook. I like Morning Star products (vegan burgers, they have really good "meal starters": ground "meat", "chicken" and "beef" strips)
Congratulations on becoming veggie!! I have the same problem my mom hates making me a different meal so instead of picking every thing out don't put the meat on your plate instead take anything else and make yourself some rice, potatoes, or even just so veggies and fruit. But some good meal ideas could be something like mac and cheese and there is stir fry wraps just before ur mom adds the chicken or beef take out some of the vegetables and have a veggie wrap. Or u could also suggest veggie burgers and hot dogs. There are many meals out there if you think about it like spaghetti don't add meat just have tomato sauce , veggies and spices. and nachos with soy cheese.
You could persuade your mum to use quorn or tofu as a healthy alternative for all the family. As a vegetarian myself, i dont actually like to eat things that meat has touched. Myaybe im being a bit fussy. Or if she is making a dish with meat, ask her 2 adapt it ever so slightly for you eg. if if your family were having chicken and vegetables she coulf just buy you a quorn fillet and it would still be cooked in the same way so its no hassle for her. Alternatively you could offer to prepare your own food.
