Despite what a lot of people who have answered this quesiton have said - this is NOT a stupid question, it is perfectly valid. It is the answer that doesn't make sense.

We are brought up, in the Western world anyway, to view certain animals as pets and others as "food". The meat industry have a lot to do with the conceived "normality" of meat (and dairy) comsumption. At the end of the day, meat is meat, and if you are prepared to eat a cow, pig, lamb or chicken, you should also be prepared to eat your pet.

And whether you directly kill the animal whose body you are eating or not, if you buy the meat the animal's death is your responsibility. Just as if you paid someone to kill someone else, you would still just as guilty as the murderer.

Have you ever seen I am Legend????

Just in case they run out of meat at the store.

Different animals serve different purposes.

Some are for eating, some are for company/entertainment.

Because some animals are okay to eat, and some aren't, of course.

EDIT: I love all the supposed "rational" responses that are attempting to justify it and leave us all abashed. They all amount to "I have pets because I want to be a hypocrite".

That makes no sense. I guess meat eaters are not allowed to have domesticated pets. Its not like we are going to eat our dogs or cats.

Because this is America and we don't eat dogs and cats here, and I have never had to personally kill a cow for a hamburger that I ate, most people dont kill their own food.

It's illegal to kill a "who" - pets are "what", same as animals that are raised to be eaten.

Putting animals on the same level of importance as humans is far more disturbing than choosing to eat meat.

People choose "what" they kill according to the custom of their country - there are places where dog and cat are food stock, and cattle are holy and taboo to harm, much less eat.

'Cause the butcher down the street might be off for a day or two...You never know! (LOL)

I cant answer your question hun, but i do understand what your saying....

I have 2 fish & since i bought them i cant eat fish, i feel guilty!!

Because ribeyes come from cows not dogs

This is a weird question--I'm vegetarian and have been for many years. We have still opened our home to 3 cats and 2 dogs whom we love very much.
As for the killing part..........I have no idea what you're taking about.

Because I highly doubt dog meat would be very tasty for me. If they tasted like steak then I guess it would be a different story.

We don't :D

You shouldn't really eat any animals, they rot in your stomach, ew!

Because it's attitudes like this that gives vegans and vegetarians a bad reputation. Being this militant about anything is akin to creationism and religious fundamentalism.

All 3 are their own worst enemy.

Many pets can be not only tasty nutrition between trips to the butcher's shop, but they can also help pass the time as little furred/finned/feathered buddies. And while you fatten them up, they benefit from all the attention we can lavish upon potential food. Sort of like a homegrown tomato.
Its a win-win situation, really.

And I guess vegans can't own houseplants without eating them, right?

It's really amazing how consistently stupid the questions are in this section.

Why do Vegetarians have house plants?

Why do vegetarians have plants & gardens?
No offense intended, but you brought it up..

I know this has to be a joke or one of the stupidiest questions ever. I eat meat and have pets. I love my pets and I know they are not to be eaten. I guess if I were raised on a farm and as a child played witht the same animals I raised and knew I had to eat them I might have a problem with that. My grandmother who was raised on a farm stated when you are raised on a you are raise to know the difference between a pet and the farm animals you are raising to eat. Common sense should also tell you no one will be eating cats, dogs, birds what ever animals they are taking care of. Anyway what does loving a pet and eat meat have to do with anything. I have no reason to eat my pet unless it's a cow, pig, or chicken? By the way I love vegetables just as much as meat.

Omnivores have pets because they understand the rationale between an animal for food and animal for companionship. I really do not understand the second part of your question, but yes people can choose who they kill or what.

However, a better question may be why a vegetarian or vegan would choose to own a pet, especially a pet that depends upon a diet rich in meat protein. Your question reeks of hypocrisy and does not help the vegan/veg cause.

honestly the question doesnt make sense.. I dont kill my pets.. I even had pet chickens and didnt kill them - we did eat the eggs though (no rooster so no baby chicks inside)

Dogs were domesticated because early humans were hunters... the dogs started following along and eventually the people "used" them
as such it is natural for humans who eat meat to own pets...

well its illegal to eat dogs and cats i belive. what i don't understand is how they're ok with eating a cow but not ok with eating a dog , makes no sense .

Because eating meat has nothing to do with whether someone loves animals or not. Most people don't kill their own meat. They buy it at the store. If I had to kill my own meat I probably would consider being a vegetarian.

I guess they compartmentalise their thinking in order to rationalise it to themselves.

Humans are very good at lying to themselves. It prevents them from having to think about things that make them feel uncomfortable or guilty.

We all do it to a lesser or greater degree and this, for meat-eaters is just another aspect of it I guess.

Yeah Sometimes..Like Take Me For Example..I Want Too Kill A Human But I Can't Cause It's Illegal..

Well, it doesn't bother me to have a pet and eat meat. But I don't eat dog meat! I don't eat veal or lamb.God allows us to eat animals, but it is wrong just to kill for sport. God does not like that.
