Why is wasabi so expensive?!

You must be going to the wrong store. It's cheap.

It should be pretty inexpensive. But if it's expensive, it may be that the flavor is extra concentrated, making it more potent.

I saw this on an asian cooking show once. The sushi chef was grating a wasabi root by hand and said it's very expensive because it takes about 10 years for the root to grow 5-6 inches.

I'm not sure it is expensive. But if you obviously think it is, well, I guess it's because it's good. ! xxx

Wasabi paste or pwder is quite inexpensive, you may want to try that. I believe it is expensive in root form because of the time it takes to grow in the ground.

For all the folks who are talking about inexpensive wasabi, they are purchasing imitation wasabi and not the real thing.

As the other poster said - the actual wasabi root takes forever to grow and is (obviously) not harvested in large quantities.
