hi terri, i am a female crohn's pt. like yourself & truly understand where you are coming from.
Have you gone to the Crohns and colitis foundation's site to get accurate information? They have a live chat and hotline that is run by healthcare professionals as well as a new forum where pts. can post questions to other crohnies.
CCFA has a bookstore with alot of great books on IBD. I bought one written by the American Dietetic Assoc. cld The AMA gudie to Better Digestion by Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD. It's great b/c it covers what to eat if you have the big d, the big c, are nauseated, have spasms, gas, etc.
FYI: women w/IBD should avoid taking any type of hormones b/c when we flare there's inflammation in the blood that causes it to get sticky thus causing clots. When hormones are added, it increases the risk over 75%. I am speaking from experience b/c I had a stroke 3 yrs. ago but I wasn't on any kind of birthcontrol b/c my GI warned me of the consequences. My DH & I have been using NFP to avoid conceiving due to health reasons & b/c all hormonal products interfere w/Crohn's meds. NFP is safe, easy to learn, and can be used to avoid or achieve a pregnancy.
i made this amazing soup!
i have the recipie.
it's creamy carrot soup.
so get your noodles.
cook them. but at the same time
cut 2 cups of carrots, 1 large potatoe(dice it)
1 table spoon of ground cinnamon,
1 cup of onion.
wait for it all to cook.
if you want you can process the potatoes and carrots.
put it together and yummy!
i have a whole book.
i LIVE off of it.
maybe you could buy a book. look around.
Sounds like you almost on a vegan diet.. i use http://www.vegweb.com all the time.. great stuff that has no meat or dairy..
I was recently diagnosed w/ Celiac disease (which means I can't eat anything w/ Gluten/wheat), and was reading that the Crohn's disease diet & Celiac diet should be treated the same way. I bought this cookbook called "THE GLUTEN-FREE VEGAN" (by Susan O'Brien) on Amazon, and was SO happy! The book is small, simple, and not intimidating. I highly recommend it. :) Be patient in your transition...it just takes a bit of extra research.
I second the recommendation for "Gluten-Free Vegan". Great stuff!
There is plenty of food out there besides dairy, red meat, pork, and fatty foods. Sounds like you might need to adjust your palate a bit.
Beans are wonderful - cheap, easy, and full of good nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber. If you're worried about gas, introduce them into your diet gradually. And make sure you soak them well (overnight is best) before cooking. Or use canned beans that have been rinsed and drained.
Fruits and veggies are also great, of course.
For non-meat protein sources, if you're not celiac or gluten-intolerant, you can eat seitan. (I don't know if it's recommended for Crohn's patients.) Many of my carnivorous friends like it better than tofu. Tempeh is also a great option.
