Is it true that old people shouldn't be vegetarians?!

Question: I was told old people must have some meat. Only vegetables are not good to them.

Answers: I was told old people must have some meat. Only vegetables are not good to them.

Actually, many people as they get older find it difficult to digest meat. Also, usually their doctors want them to seriously limit saturated fat. Which meat is chock full of.

So the answer is no. The elderly often prefer things like soft vegetables and well cooked rice, potatoes and beans. For one thing they are easier to chew. Many elderly women especially prefer milk-type drinks and eat little else (hard to chew food tends to discourage them).

Any nutritional definciences can be addressed with supplements, like iron supplements. Most older people are on at least a few pills anyway, so an extra vitamin is no big deal.

If you think about it, humans in our evolutionary history did not have dentists etc. In old age we lose our teeth. They would not have been able to eat meat, as they couldn't chew it. The only way they could have survived is by eating soft vegetables.

Nobody needs to eat meat, ever.

People in our evolutionary history didn't even live to old age, you dingbat...the person above who said it. So of course they didn't have time to lose their teeth. OMG...that's probably the most ignorant thing I've ever heard!

LOL another Protien Myth.. like children must have meat or they won't grow.

A balance Plant Based diet is what EVERYONE needs. I am one of the "old ones" myself. As we age even when we are active we just don't burn the calories we did when younger. It's very important we get the best nutrition with the lowest calories to stay trim & healthy. That nurtition is a Plant based diet, without the fat & cholestrol of animal flesh or animal by products. Also our digestive systems are less likely to readily digest the animal products, so get gas, heartburn, ingestion from them. Why do you think all those ads onTV are aimed at us oldsters?
