Are you bothered when people say they're vegetarian, but then ask what they can eat?!
Answers: If you're self-applying the label vegetarian or vegan, shouldn't you *already* know what you can and can't eat? I mean, why call yourself something unless you're 100% sure of what it means beforehand? No offense, I'm just wondering what's up with that. Am I the only one who finds this odd?
I agree with you to an extent..now things like, whats in cheese that I cant eat ? and what is gelatin? is perfectly sensible to ask.
But ," Im a vegetarian, can I still eat chicken? " grates on my nerves.
I can chalk this up to the fact most of the people who ask this are young and oblivious. More than likely wanting to be apart of something they consider "trendy" or "different".
But in that, you can always hope a few of them actually learn something.
I remember being 15, learning what a vegan was and thinking "how could they possible give it up ?? Not me, no way!!" and here I am 15 years later and a vegan!
Everones gotta start somewhere i guess. You are not born vegan...
EDIT- So what are you until you become a Democrat? An illegal alien? Wow, you are narrow minded...
I do think it is a little bit odd, but it is mostly people who are unfamiliar with the lifestyle. If a person is just starting out, they might need more guidance.
It may be those who are new to this way of life who are asking. Those of us who have been vegetarian for a much longer time might have the answers they're looking for. Also, new products are coming out all the time, and we like to be sure of what we consume.
No it doesn't bother me. People learn from asking questions. Questions like yours bother me though. Did you research how to ride a bike before you ever got on one? Or what about the first time you tired to cook something. Were you expert before you started. You have a problem lady. Get over it.
These teeny boopers are at a stage in their life they are trying to figure out who they are and what they should do with their lives. Alot is based on experiment because they don't have the wisdom or been thru the experiences that older people have. That doesn't make them or their questions stupid or odd. It makes them normal. Do those of you that this applies to not remember what it was like to be 14. Have some compassion.
no it is irritating. they make such huge life choices without even knowing the basic rules.
There are many ingredients in food that are animal-based. People who are trying to find these out have to start somewhere. For example, gelatin is derived from animals but in North America it does not say the source it comes from on a label. Be diplomatic!
I find it really odd too.. and i love it when the little teeny-boppers are like "What?? i can't eat Marshmallows?? but it's not meat?" LOL.. You really have to know whats going on.. with your body and your self too.. And what being a veg*an really means..
Why is everyone hating on me today.. just answered the question.. dang.. i'm gunna go and feed the lamas.. :o(
Yes and no. I went vegetarian at 16 armed with a lot of reasons why, but not much information on how. It took time to learn all that stuff, especially since that was before the advent of the internet. I probably ate gelatin without knowing what it was for a good two months.
It's sometimes frustrating because I've answered the same questions what feels like a million times, but if I put myself in that person's shoes, I realize that it's their first time asking it. If you don't ask, you won't know. Sure, all the information is now out there on the web and everyone could do their own research, but I don't think it's bad to ask for advice and guidance from people who share your lifestyle but have a lot more experience at it.
Maybe they want some new ideas.
Your not the only, most say they vegetarian and eats, eggs and milk and derived.
No. This site is designed for such questions.I would say the vast majority of the people who ask that question have just proclaimed they want to be vegatarian after watching a PETA video. Te yahve no clue what the diet entails or the lifestyle changes they need to make. The majority of them are teenagers and I can guarantee within a week most of them are back at McDonalds. That is just the mind of a teenager.
wujoosay i was born a veggie :)
and yeah i think its usually about learning and getting used to what they can and cant eat :)
Well thats true.
But if they are at your house and you serve them some weird meal they've never heard of, its totally fine to ask if theres meat in it, or if they can eat this.
