Is it true that after a couple years of being a vegitarian it is hard for your stomach to digest meat?!

Question: i've heard from some that after 4 or 5 years without eating meat or fish, it is almost impossible to go back to eating them as your stomach cannot digest them. is this true? or does it just differ for different people?

Yes........I accidentally ate a couple bites of soup with chicken broth a few years back and got sick as could be. It's happened a couple times with food accidents, my body reacts almost immediately to get rid of it.
EDIT: Again, we've said it a few times to you, it's vegEtarian--see the E??

I've never heard of this, but it could possibly be true because you usually get sick if you eat meat after a few months of not eating it,

It may differ for different people, but I tried eating meat about 11 years ago after being a vegetarian for 8 years (just to see if I could...dumb, I know)..and boy was I sorry!

I ate beef a year or two after becoming a vegetarian, and I got so sick that I swear I'll never eat it again. Now, I've been a vegetarian for about five years...and I shudder when I think of what would happen now :)

No, it's not "exactly" true.

It's different per person.

What is true is that we are not designed to digest meat. We have the teeth and digestive tract of an herbivore.

Which is why the average meat eater has 8 pounds of undigested meat in their colon.

However, over time, we build up a tolerance to it. When we stop eating it we lose that tolerance.

It's the same for dairy and even beans. Beans can cause gas, unless they are pressure cooked. For those of us who eat beans all the time, the proper digestive enzymes have become more active.

I know people who've been veg for 10 and more years who gave it up and returned to meat eating without issues. In fact, I think the longer you go, the easier it may be for the simple fact that we are NOT designed to eat meat. So going veggie for a length of time cleans out a lot of the junk in our bowels that hinder our digestion outright.

"What is true is that we are not designed to digest meat. We have the teeth and digestive tract of an herbivore."

This is false. we have the teeth and digestive tract of an omnivore.

The rest of her statement is true however. your body doesn't produce what it doesn't need, in order to save energy that may be better used elsewhere.

If we had the digestive tract of an herbivore, our body wouldn't be able to produce the enzymes that digest meat at all, no matter how much we ate.

we cannot, however, digest cellulose (plant cell-walls.)

it is not like that all the time bcoz the base of the food chain is vegetables so each stomach has to digest vegetable. here is about practice your stomach doesnt not get meant and chicken so stomach cant digest it properly like other person who eat meant and other regularly. thats why ppl can get sick when then eat this after long time. if you keep trying to eat meant and chicken then you can digest again n if you stop bcoz u cant do that or u dont like that then never try it bcoz it make you sick.

I was a Vegetarian for 15 years and a Vegan for 4. Now I eat a little meat about twice a month as a side dish on the advice of my doctor. I haven't had any trouble adjusting at all. I am also a runner, running between 3-8 miles a day. Perhaps that helps a lot with digestion. But that's only one factor, I think there are many issues that determine how a Vegetarian adapts when eating/digesting meat. Hope this helps!

It makes sense. But, I haven't heard any scientific evidence to support that claim.

I don't know but it sounds possible.

It wouldn't be anywhere near impossible to go back to eating meat but it would make most people at least a little sick.

Well after being vegan for a while and eating meat it did make my stomache feel upset. It varies I'm sure.

yes

No. This is false. The human body can digest meat. The human body doesn't transform itself into a non-human body. This is veger propaganda posted on veger sites to discourage people from going back to eating meat.

The only people getting sick are the one's who find out they eat meat and feel guilty about it. Guilt manifests itself as a sick stomach just like fear and anxiety do.

Would Inuits get sick if they ate non-meats?
