Recovered Vegitarian?!

Question: I have recently run into a handful of "recovered vegetarian" that claim that the vegetarian diet was harmful to their health. They now mostly do a limited meat diet (chicken and fish mostly) to get animal protein that a handful of nutritionalists that they calmed was essential for their diet due to their specific metabolism. Anyone ever heard of this?

Yes. It's called Nutritional Typing by William Wollcott. Dr Mercola also recommends it. It appears logical enough, although I personally haven't checked every reference in the book to know for certain.

I have heard of this, and while I have no facts to back this up, I think it may have something to do with an eating disorder. While eating a vegetarian/vegan diet, these people weren't willing to eat the wide variety of foods that are needed for good health. Just a guess, but I know this applies to the particular person I have in mind.

I believe it is possible, but not likely to happen to most persons. I don't think anyone should just jump into changing their eating habits greatly without a good deal of thoughtful research and consideration. I've been a vegan for many years, and it is personally a better lifestyle for me. I would never try to pretend to be a medical expert and tell people on this forum how they should and shouldn't eat. I can only speak for myself and my own experience. I do believe that everyone has to be proactive in their own health care.

I feel that if one eats a healthy vegetarian diet that includes fresh fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains there is no need what so ever for meat of any kind for any body type.

I'm sure that happens alot. Getting all the nutrients you need as a vegetarian is possible, but you have to know what you're doing.

I'm not a vegan, never have been, never will be.

the person above me describes a diet that might be ok, as long as the person also takes calcium supplements and/or products fortified with calcium and vitamin B12 supplements and/or is eating enough grain products that are fortified with b12

Born Again Vegetarians!

I expect "recovered vegetarians" were eating a totally crap vegetarian diet.

(i.e.) processed flours in the form of bread and pastas, refined sugar in the form of cola and biscuits. Lots of fatty cheeses. Tinned or microwave foods. In other words, dead foods with no nutritional value.

Most unhealthy vegetarians I know follow the diet as above, with limited or no fresh fruit and vegetable intake.
