I'm thinking about going vegetarian. Any nutritional advice?!

Question: To have a healthy vegetarian diet,
(1) Make sure you're meeting your caloric needs - don't starve yourself by eating only low-calorie foods like salads.
(2) Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains.

See this site for good vegetarian sources of protein, iron, and calcium: http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/?v=08sourc...

This site explains the four veg food groups:

Good luck.

eat lots of beans and tofu, maybe get some iron suppliments and your good :)

Hi there, I'm happy to help!!

Google ''The Vegetarian Society''. It is such a great website, it will tell you the myths associated with veg*ism and nutrition advice and more.

Protein is found in: eggs, yogurt, cheese, milk, soya milk, tofu, beans, nuts, seeds and lentils. Iron can be found in dark green leafy veg, nuts/seeds and even baked beans!

Almonds are a great high protein snack!!

Do a lot of research before you go vegetarian. To get all of your essential vitamins and minerals, eat a variety of different foods and I promise you won't have a problem.

Soya milk is great because it suppliees all 8 essential amino acids and is a healthier source of perfect protein!

Best wishes, you can do it!! :-)

EDIT: Do NOT take 3 iron pills a day! There's no need to take a pill if you eat wholegrain fortified cereals, etc. In fact, fortified cereals contain iron that is much easier for the body to absorb (Reference: Nutrition for Dummies, 2006)

Uhm. The only thing I can tell you is make sure you like vegetables. My doctor was pretty mad at me when I told him I was a vegetarian and that I wasn't eating my greens! He told me to keep the vegetable category up because they supply you with the iron that your system is missing, and also the dark green vegetables are rich in calcium. Other than that, congratulations on going animal friendly =]

If there is anything else you need help with, check out PETA's website. They can even send you a free starter kit.

The vegetarian diet is very healthy but you will need to eat a variety of foods- beans, peas, vegetables, grains, seeds, fruits etc.
To get the iron your body needs you should eat fresh leafy green veg like spinach. you will also need plenty of protein which is available in tofu and quorn etc.

I've been vegetarian for almost three years.
I don't take supplements or anything.
I'm perfectly healthy.
Just eat what you normally would (minus meat) and make sure you get enough excersize.

lean meat has proteins that YOUR BODY needs!!!!

I have to take iron tablets - 3 a day. As meat gives you iron. However, spinach and broccoli - green veg will give you it. Urrrm, make sure you vary with what you eat. Don't just stick to potato things.

YES I AM A VEGETARIAN SO I KNOW HOW TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WELL SINCE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT MEAT HAS A LOT OF PROTEIN IN IT, AND YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE IT UP, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER SOURCE OF PROTEIN. I WOULD SUGGEST LIKE 2 OR 1 PROTEIN BARS. NOT ALL OF THEM ARE REALLY THAT BAD. AND MAKE SURE THAT ANYTHING YOU EAT, YOU LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS, YOU NEVER KNOW, THEY MIGHT HAVE MEAT OR MEAT SAUCE OR IS A PRODUCT OF MEAT. SO YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN. I AM SO GLAD THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY VEGETARIAN IN THE WORLD. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE YOU CHOOSE TO BE A VEGETARIAN.
