If You're Sick of PETA, Where Do You Turn For Information?!

Question: I know a lot of people hate PETA, and some of them are vegetarian and vegan. I don't have a real opinion on them yet, but I feel uncomfortable getting all my information from one source - I try to be as informed as I can.

This is an opinion-and-suggestion sort of question.
Do you like PETA, or no? Why?
Have you found similar organizations that you trust more? Where do you go for info on how they treat animals, etc?
Any good books you've read, or sites you've been to?
Have you visited any slaughter factories for yourself?

Answer any of my questions and you'll be super cool =D
Unless the only thing you say is "the internet"... well, dur :P
Thanks guys <3

I don't care for PETA. I don't doubt that they've caused some change, but I intensely dislike many of their tactics. As a feminist, I especially dislike their treatment of women. I won't support them financially, but I will protest with them, as I did last night against the circus.

If you're in North America, check out Compassion Over Killing (www.cok.net). Their focus is on animals raised for food, especially the egg industry.

For health information, check out Vegetarian Resource Group (www.vrg.org).

Since Wayne Pacelle took over at the Humane Society of the U.S., they are focusing more on animals raised for food, animals enslaved in the entertainment industry (including animal fighting), animals kept for their fur, and hunting (especially the Canadian seal hunt). Several other animal rights organizations, such as Fund for Animals and Doris Day's group, have been subsumed into HSUS. They also have a legislative arm aimed at electing animal-friendly lawmakers. Go to www.hsus.org.

Besides "Skinny B*tch," I recommend Howard Lyman's books, although he doesn't focus much on the animal rights issues, mostly the health and environmental issues. I borrowed a friend's copy of "Slaughterhouse," and it chilled my blood. "Skinny B*tch" borrows from "Slaughterhouse" fairly heavily. For a feminist perspective, check out Carol J. Adams' "The Pornography of Meat." I find it more accessible and less academic than "The Sexual Politics of Meat."

And no I haven't been to a slaughterhouse. But every year, roughly 10 billion animals are killed in roughly 6,700 U.S. slaughterhouses, for which there are only 7,500 inspectors.

The Humane Society

Do you like PETA: NO,

Why: Because I have not seen them actually achieve much. I am glad people have become vegetarinas due to them, But I need to see them actually making process

Have you found similar organizations that you trust more: Yes

Where do you go for info on how they treat animals: HTTP://WW.HSUS.ORG

Any good books you've read, or sites you've been to: Watched earthlings, and Skinny Bi!ch. - I also get the magazine VegNews.
Have you visited any slaughter factories for yourself: Yes. Scary!

There are so many groups out there! I, personally, turn to books for information. I am a fact and figure kind of guy so I love medical publications and books that are extensively researched.

PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) is a great source:http://www.pcrm.org/

Read: Diet For a New America, Diet For a Small Planet, Silent Spring, Skinny B**ch (I'm reluctant on this one but it's good and fully backed up)

ASPCA:http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer

Farm Sanctuary:http://www.farmsanctuary.org/

There are so many others but I have to go to sleep. G*nite!!

What is PETA? Live in Australia

http://www.amazingfacts.org has some excellent links to sources about vegetarians and vegans and healthful living. You will have to search around on the websight as it is Christian for the health parts of it. At the top of the opening page is a link that says store. From store click on books. When you are inside click on "Health, Cooking and Wellness". This will be an awsome sight other than PETA for you to get some information! And yes I would use that information myself!

I'm vegan and I disagree with many things about PETA even though my beliefs are similar to theirs. For a group to take such a proactive stand as they do with protests of animal testing, farms, and even painting people wearing fur, they need to be above reproach themselves.

Here are examples of discrepancies I have discovered:

1. PETA has videos of slaughter of animals, and this appears to be one of their main ways of coaxing people to stop eating meat and wearing fur and leather. When it is pointed out to them that millions of animals such as lizards, frogs, rabbits and birds are slaughtered during harvest of crops for the majority of our vegetables, they engage in stonewalling or totally disregard that this fact even needs to be considered. A few of them will rationalize that a few lizards, frogs, rabbits and birds are not worthy in comparison to what they oppose. Or they will say it is unintentional. Unintentional? Right. I agree that it is horrible that animals are slaughtered, but I am hardly going to preach to others when so many animals are slaughtered during crop harvest. Can anyone tell me why PETA does not do videos of crop harvest showing the cut up bodies of animals? I have a hunch that it is because their millions of dollars in donations would dwindle.

2. PETA has calendars of nude persons, especially nude women to promote their campaign and make more money. What are they, PETA or Playboy?

3. PETA calendars have photos of women who are known to have had breast implants and other cosmetic surgery, including botox and collagen. These women say they will never wear fur because it is cruelty to animals and disgusting. Do any of these women have enough common sense or integrity to do personal research into the animal testing done for creating and perfecting the art of breast implants and the medicines used? Do they care how much animal testing is done to create and perfect the other cosmetic enhancements such as botox and collagen. More importantly, does PETA even care? No. Again, I have the hunch that it is because their millions of dollars in donations would dwindle. I'm not going to preach that people should not use certain medicines or have implants, but people who do are hypocrites to call fur wearers 'animal killers'.

I was a vegan long before there was ever a PETA, and I'll still be one long after people start realizing that PETA does not practice what it preaches.

Here are my favorite inspirational vegan websites:

I’ve never been to a slaughter house. But I don’t think you need to go inside one to find out what really goes on in there.

I'm quite undecided when it comes to PETA. Some of their campaigns are a little extreme. But I have to admit they do a good job raising awarness. I would extend my research beyond PETA though. There are some great books and online sources. I'm a member of http://www.voiceless.org.au/ I found this directory of other animal rights organisations, there are hundreds of them http://au.dir.yahoo.com/Science/Biology/...

I don't like the book skinny B*tch. It's diet book published by an ex-model. It's all about losing weight, and has nothing to do with animal rights or environmental ethics. I would prefer reading something a little more sustentative. I would recommend Peter Singer's The Ethics of What We Eat or Animal Factories. Singer is a great author and a distinguished ethicist, unlike Kim Barnouin.

I'm vegan and have been wary of PETA since I went to an actual protest. I will never go to another. They are too extreme to see faults in their own thinking and actions. For one thing, I saw at least fifty persons there with obvious hair coloring or beached out with black roots. What level of IQ does not know a great deal of animals are tortured and killed to research and test hair dyes and bleaches? When I inquired, I was told that no animals were harmed in making those hair dyes. Yeah, I want to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge.

I like the more scientific oriented groups myself. I can list some links of alternative information groups.

I hate PETA because the "heart" members care more about animals' than humans. They degrade human beings for their cause, even degrade animal fur by throwing dead fish and paint on it--if the animal's dead, respect the fur!--they euthanize thousands of animals every year because they're too lazy to go and get the funds themselves, they think house pets should be free to pretty much get hit by cars and shot by angered neighbors, humiliate people in public for their cause, show really young children graphic pictures of a dead cow, and they support terroristic groups like ALF and EFL. Ingrid Newkirk said that if she had the guts, she'd go and blow up research facilities and anything else causing harm. I like the Humane Society.

1) Do I like PETA? No. I am an animal activist but would would never ever associate myself with PETA

2) Other organizations and other info? Yes. Humane Society, ASPCA, PAWS (for cats and dogs), Nature Watch ( a local environmental/animal rights group), Greenpeace to name a few. Info from science books, libraries, personal experience, the internet sometimes, seminars, lectures by zoologist, biologist and other experts.
3) Books - books by Tom Regan, Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare, Discussing Animal Rights and Animal Research in the Classroom, in Teaching of Psychology, many others
4) Yes many many times.

If I weren't already a vegetarian, I would be turned off to it if I was a young person just getting into this life style. There are so many extremists who talk the talk but don't walk the walk. PETA is the worst of the offenders.

Look at the thumbs down on persons pointing out inconsistencies in how PETA does not practice what it preaches. They don't want to hear about how their starlet spokespersons have had implants and botox, even though they know exactly the extent of animal cruelty used in doing the research. They know how the anesthesia and other medications have been tested on animals. But if the can make donations off the naked people, what the heck, they will throw honesty down the drain. These peabrained starlets won't wear fur, but they sure wear their implants and botox with pride. No one spray paints them with red paint.

There are several good organizations out there, and the first I would recommend for books is the Humane Society.

I have been an activist and vegan for a long time. My actual screen name on Yahoo is Tree Hugger. I've received a lot of ridicule for that name and I've ended up using my initials instead and making all my Yahoo profiles private.

As much as I am an activist, I dislike PETA. They really do nothing proactive to protect animals, it is mostly illusion and using extreme tactics to rake in huge donations. That said, there are some very sincere, dedicated and nice persons within PETA, but they just haven't seen through the double standards yet.

PETA shows these extreme videos of animal cruelty but ignores the fact that many animal are horribly slaughtered during the process of growing and harvesting crops. They don't want to address that side of the issue. I would think a lot more of them if they would address this issue, and the need to bring back small farms which give a personal touch to caring for the crops and harvest. People from PETA really need to read about Ghandi and his way of life. He was a true vegan and role model.

I'm leaving some good links for you to find reading material beyond PETA. The first one is a scientific organization which is for animal rights, and they discuss how PETA will never really gain followers over time because PETA compares meat eaters, leather and fur wears to Nazis, slave owners and rapists. Many Jews, blacks and women's groups object to these comparisons.

Also, PETA encourages the use of certain food products and alternative products to leather and fur, and many alternatives of what they suggest are made in China under slave labor.

ok there are numerous opinions out there. Many people dont like peta just because its the main organization for "people for the ethical treatment of animals. Its just an organization thats trying to make a difference , they are just more "well-known."
Yes, i like PETA. They have a good cause. they inform people abouthow animals are treated, how to become a veg*n, and they provide you with chat rooms to help you cope with your differences.
I dont know of any organizations that compare at all to PETA. i think peta is the best out there.
good books would be: Skinny *****. It promote veganism. Some sites Ive been to:
www.vegan.com
www.vegan.org
www.vegsource.com
www.goveg.com
www.veganoutreach.com
there are soo much more!
No ive never visited any slaughter factories myself. i think i would faint...there is no way i could watch that in person...i can barely watch the videos on peta.

hate peta, love meat.
But if you hate peta you might like the ALF, they firebomb animal research labs.

I like PETA. Animals cant speak for themselves so someone has to defend them. That sounds fair.
I don't think it's right to go throwing blood on people.
But I don't think it's a very nice thing to do wearing a fur coat that an animal had to be killed for.Would you like it if someone tryed to kill a pet you loved to make a fur coat? Just so they would look fashionable, is that right?
You know that story Shiloh? about the dog who was abused? and followed the boy home because he was scared? Well PETA helps animals like that.If you ever get mad at PETA at leasrt give them credit for defending those who cant defend themselves.

what animals are you guys talking about, the ones we eat or any animals. cause most of the animals we eat have always been cloned or hybrid animals meaning God(for you religious folks) or Nature, did not make these animals so they are not natural. you know cows, chicken, pigs, lambs. so i don't know, i don't eat certain things because they make our body sick and they make us crazy, derange, stressed, killers, make us hate one another and on and on. know peta doing something about will animals like wild fish, deers, Buffalo's, goats, elks, lions, polar bears, bears, elephants and so on. then yeah kool.

but i think there are bigger things to worry about than fake animals like the wild ones and our water the good water spring water(and if you want to buy the best spring water the once with a pH higher than 7, it cast more than gas per gallon i don't need gas to live i need spring water) which is diminishing every day due to a lot of greed and feeding these fake animal, just to name a few of many things.

i personally think peta do a brilliant job, but i also support these which are superb

worth a look!
with regard to the thumbs down for people who HAVEN'T slagged off PETA, in my opinion at least peta are doing something for the animals and bringing it to the attention of people,no organisation is perfect, if you are doing more for the plights of animals than PETA are then feel free to thumbs down!
congratulations to the people that are doing more than PETA for the animals, i am really proud of you, how do you find the time to come in here???? :)
