What can't I eat? (I'm a vegetarian)?!


Question: I became a vegetarian not too long ago and I was wondering what I can't eat. I pretty much the basics like meat. I've heard you can't eat skittles. What other things am I "not allowed" to eat? Also, what are some good recipes?

Basically, vegetarians don't eat foods that an animal had to die for. Meat is the obvious one and it includes the flesh of all animals, including fish. But slaughter byproducts include gelatin, made from boiled skins and connective tissue and the reason Skittles aren't vegetarian; meat broths; lard; beef fat, which is also listed as tallow on ingredients labels; and rennet, which comes from the lining of a calf's stomach and is used to coagulate some cheeses. There are some ingredients like glycerin which can come from either plant or animal sources; a lot of vegetarians will look for labels that specify vegetable glycerin or they will contact the manufacturer and ask what the source of their glycerin is. You can find cheeses that are vegetarian friendly by looking for ones that say they use vegetable or microbial rennet; Tillamook is a major supermarket brand that labels their cheeses as using vegetable rennet. For good recipes, all you have to do is search the internet. Google 'vegetarian recipes' and you'll find sites devoted to vegetarian recipes, as well as sites like http://www.allrecipes.com which has a big vegetarian section. One of my first vegetarian cookbooks was the original Moosewood Cookbook and there are still a few recipes in there that I use regularly.

Are you vegetarian or VEGAN? There is a vast difference.

If you're vegetarian, there are things you CAN eat that are still animal byproducts (cheese and milk are allowed for example, but sometimes not eggs).

But if you're VEGAN, then NOTHING that comes from an animal (including honey) is allowed.

So you need to determine what TYPE of vegetarian you are, and to what extent you are going to carry your vegetarianism.

As a vegetarian gelatin so a big no no for me.

You need to be careful when you buy things that may contain "slaughterhouse products". Some deserts and sweets contain gelatine for example. Most UK products have a list of ingredients and may say "suitable for vegetarians".

Some food colours -red "Cochineal" for example - are said to be made from crushed beetles...

Some cheese is still made with rennet which is an enzyme taken from a dead calf's stomach!

So really it is all down to reading labels.

Vegetarianism is not about what you CAN'T eat, it's about what you chose or not chose to eat. If you do not want any meat of meat by-products at all you are a vegan. If you just don't eat meat, you're a vegetarian.

Read labels, and buy cook books. It's not just about eating vegetables. You must get sources of iron, protein ,and calcium.

Here are good foods with sources of protein, calcium, Omega 3, and iron:

Kidney beans, navy beans, pinto beans, garbonzo beans, dark green and/or leafy vegetables (especially spinach), flax seed, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, lentils, whole grains, rice, oats.

Being vegetarian is about balance of the right foods to replace what is missing from not eating meat. By not eating properly as a vegetarian you can actually become unhealthy.

Gosh people don't have to be so mean!

I used to be a vegetarian and what I did was I ate everything but meat. I would even go to taco bell and eat a taco with no meat. I would go to burgerking and eat a burger with no meat. It sounds kind of silly, i know but who cares.

You cant eat meat, fish, poultry. Lol

Jelly sweets (e.g Haribo, Midget gems etc) Oreos, Marshmallows, Parmasan cheese, Some other types of cheese, anything containing geletin you cannot eat.

You can eat, Turkish Delight though.

Check the labels to be absolutley sure, nothing containing geletin. Most labels have a little V for vegetarians on them now.

The answer is simple. If you want be be a strict vegetarian, then you can only eat products which say 'suitable for vegetarians' on the packet. If it doesn't say that then you shouldn't eat it.
