Try the book Animal Ingredients A to Z: Third Edition. Also this webiste maybe help you too..

Gelatin comes to mind. It is used as a binder or thickening agent is lots of things that you would not expect. (like mentos candy, some tofu ice creams etc) It is derived from pig hooves and is not considered "vegan friendly".

These sites have good lists of the additives that hide behind their E-numbers.

I won't bother reposting the same links but yeah the E numbers is what you need to know. You can get small business card sized references from some groups to carry in your wallet. I have one from a group in Australia and its invaluable. You should be able to get one in your country with any luck.

There is also a book called Animal Ingredients A-Z which you may like (http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Ingredients... However I've never read it myself so I can't comment on its quality.

usually you can just read the ingredients on stuff that you don't now about..... but you can usually tell whether or not something is animal or has an animal by product.
