If I were interested in becoming a vegetarian, where would I start?!

Question: Just curious, any ideas? Thank you.

Answers: Just curious, any ideas? Thank you.

It depends, some people will become vegetarian over night, and others will do it gradually over a few months. I personally found it easier to just do it right away because I couldn't stand the taste of meat any longer. Make sure that you have done proper research before becoming vegetarian, or else you will end up looking quite stupid. Here are some great websites to check out.

Hope this helps, good luck, and congratulations on making such a good lifestyle decision!

try tofu

back garden - or your rabbit pet food

I've been a vegetarian for a really long time. I started by not eating fish, it helps if you give things up little at a time. For example the first you could give up steak or the meat you dislike the most, then continue giving up the things you prefer. Good Luck.

Stop eating meat for one thing

You should first decide what type of vegetarian you want to become. There are several types, NON OF WHICH EAT MEAT OR FISH !!!! However you can become a Pescatarian (also spelled pescetarian) first, so that you can gradually step into the vegetarian lifestyle:

Pescatarian (also spelled pescetarian)

The word “pescatarian” is occasionally used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh
with the exception of fish. Although the word is not commonly used, more and more people are adopting this kind of
diet, usually for health reasons or as a stepping stone to a fully vegetarian diet.

Lacto-ovo- vegetarian

When most people think of vegetarians, they think of lacto-ovo-vegetarians. People who do not eat beef, pork,
poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind, but do eat eggs and dairy products are lacto-ovo vegetarians
(“lacto” comes from the Latin for milk, and “ovo” for egg).

Lacto-vegetarian is used to describe a vegetarian who does not eat eggs, but does eat dairy products.

Ovo-vegetarian refers to people who do not eat meat or dairy products but do eat eggs.

Vegan

Vegans do not eat meat of any kind and also do not eat eggs, dairy products, or processed foods containing these or

other animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin. Many vegans also refrain from eating foods that are made using
animal products that may not contain animal products in the finished process, such as sugar and some wines.

The vegetarian can be a healthy option, as it reduces fat intake and lowers cholestrol. However, you have to
ensure that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, to get all the vitamins and minerals from your foods. To do this, you have to exercise regularly, and use the vegetarian diet pyramid:

The myth of becomming a vegetarain, is that you hardly get any protein, and you have to ingest vitamin tablets. Neither of these are true !

Proteins are organic compounds made of amino acids. The body can make some of its own amino acids -- these are
called nonessential amino acids. The amino acids the body can't make on its own are called essential amino acids.
People have to get these proteins from the food they eat.

If a food contains enough essential amino acids, it's called a complete protein. Meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, milk
and soy products are complete proteins. If the protein in a food doesn't have all the essential acids, it's an
incomplete protein. Fruits, grains and vegetables are incomplete proteins.

There are different kinds of vegetarian diets. Vegans are the strictest kind of vegetarian -- they eat only plant
products. Lacto-vegetarians allow dairy products, and lacto-ovo-vegetarians allow eggs as well as dairy products. .

Sources of Protein:
Type of food Quantity providing 10g protein (g)
Soya flour 24
Peanuts 39
Pumpkin seeds 41
Almonds 47
Brazil Nuts 50
Sunflower seeds 51
Sesame seeds 55
Hazel Nuts 71
Wholemeal bread 95
Whole lentils dried & boiled 114
Chickpeas dried & boiled 119
Kidney beans dried & boiled 119
Wholemeal spaghetti boiled 213
Brown rice boiled 385

Vegetarians and vegans do not only avoid meat and fish, they avoid several other hiden animal products found in foods:

Casein—Whey's cousin, casein is made from curdled milk.

Gelatin—Gelatin is a protein made by boiling cows' and pigs', often found in Jell-O

Honey— Animal cruelty, here's why :

From a former beekeeper: "Typically, beekeepers are gloved and netted to avoid stings (nearly every bee who

stings will die due to her entrails being pulled from her body attached to her stinger.) Then the hives are opened

as quickly as possible and the bees are ‘smoked.' Smoke from a smoldering fire carried in a ‘smoker' is pumped into

the hive and the bees are ‘calmed.' In spite of this, the combs are pulled quickly and many bees are crushed in the

process. When a bee is hurt, she releases a chemical message that alerts and activates the hive members who proceed

to attack the intruder—giving their lives in the process."

Lard— Fat from hog abdomens

Pepsin— clotting agent from pigs' stomachs, used in some cheeses and vitamins.

Rennet—an enzyme taken from baby calves' stomachs, used in cheese production.

Stearic Acid— used in chocolate and vitamins, comes from a fatty substance taken from slaughtered pigs' stomachs—or from cows, sheep, or dogs and cats euthanized in animal shelters.

Cetyl Palmitate—used margarine that contains cetylpalmitate, the fancy term for the waxy oil derived from sperm whales' heads or from dolphins.

Urea—Urea comes from urine and other "bodily fluids." It's used to "brown" baked goods, like pretzels.

Here is a list of some possible options that you can get from the supermarket. These products are vegan and

vegetarian:

OMG that would be soo cool

First try eating everything except meat
and then everything except meat and dairy

and before you know it youll be a healthy vegan!!!

Quorn tastes just like the meat it is trying to imitate and will satisfy your desire for meat. Try it, it's just perfect and I eat it all the time instead of meat. =)

Start with a book about nutrition.

Vegetarians have to be sure to get all the nutrients the body needs. Complete proteins and Vit. B-12 are particular challenges.

Do some real research, don't just ask questions on Yahoo.

THE PRODUCE SECTION!

get some soya and cook it with onions and make some burgers or shepherds pies and if you like it continue eating it and buy some tufu and get some veggies and make a stir fry eventually u will enjoy eating vergetarian food dont bother buying real meat.

I've been a vegetarian my whole life so these tips might be a little weird. Okay, first subsitute the meat for other things. Such as beef for beans in Mexican food. Or try more vegetables in your diet. First, you should cut down slowly. If you make a drastic change it may make you sick. Also try peta2.com they have geat tips for living a meat free life :D

eating friuts

When I started,I was eight, i just stopped eating the meats that I thought tasted bad. So I basically only ate bacon, sausages and some fish. I didn't eat like steak or anything cuz those are totally bloody and really SCREAM slaughter. Later, I stopped eating meant all together. But when you become a vegetarian, you don't have to eat tofu, etc. I personally think it tastes horrible. Yuck! Just make sure you eat lots of nuts and veggies. I might not eat healthy for a few days but I don't feel bad if I lack iron or protein, I just might have a bit less energy. Good luck becoming a veggie!!
