Sure, use canola or any other veg oil. Hummus is a bean spread, so tastes like beans. But yes, most people add extra flavour with tahini (or a blob of peanut butter) and cumin. I like it with chili powder.

You can probably use canola oil or any other kind of healthy oil. Hummus tastes soo good! I can't really explain the flavor but I'm sure you'll love it once you try it. It taste really good with veggies and with pita.

You really need the olive oil. I wouldn't make it by substituting a different oil. I can't believe you're going to make something without knowing what it tastes like! You can get some prepared hummus at the grocery store. At Publix, they have in the bakery/deli section with potato salads etc. Also, it's in the refrigerated aisle with the dips, cheese. It's good- but it has a unique taste. A lot of people like it, some people don't. Or- go to a Greek/ Mediterranean restaurant- we have plenty of lunch crowd places where you can get carryout too- you'll get some hummus there.

That recipe looks very simple but not too tasty. It doesn't even have tahini in it? Anyway you can make a fat free hummus by using some of the liquid from the canned beans. You don't even need to use oil. Do you have any spices in the house? Cumin, Paprika, and Cayenne pepper would all work great in there.

How in heaven could you not have olive oil? It is essential in everyone's kitchen. How can you cook without it?
Himmus would taste false without olive oil.

You can make it with any oil. But it won't be as nutritious and it won't taste like hummus.

I second Kyle on his comment that this is a bad recipe. You can't have hummus without tahini paste. Sesame seeds (which the paste is made from) are LOADED in nutrition. The whole point of hummus is the tahini. Otherwise it's just ground garbanzos.

Here is a recipe without olive oil - but you would still TOP the hummus with olive oil.

2 cloves garlic—roughly chopped
? cup lemon juice
? cup water
14 oz (400g) canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans)—rinsed and drained
? cup tahini
1 teaspoon sea salt

Toss everything in a food processor. Blend until smooth.

Contrary to popular belief canola oil is NOT good for you. It is genetically engineered from a toxic plant. Why use it when there are so many natural healthy oils out there?
