Question about being Vegan. Leather and stuff?!

Question: So I went vegan a couple weeks ago, but I have some leather bags and a wool coat from before...my friend said that if I want to be "truly vegan" I have to like, throw it out. But it was all really expensive, and it seems like kind of a waste, so does it still count if I just keep all the stuff and dont buy anymore??

i don't think there are any hard fast rules about that. i think by throwing them out you are doing an injustice to the already dead animal. so, keep what you have if you are still comfortable wearing it, but don't buy anything new in the way of leather coats, shoes, belts, bracelets etc. if you feel icky about wearing them, then give them to a charity that gives people warm coats for the winter. you are right, it would be a waste, so keep it or give it to someone who needs it. i had a blue suede jacket that had been given to me prior to me giving up wearing animals, and i had to give it to charity. i couldn't stand the smell of the 'dead cow' hide. you will find that it will not only be an emotional and physical change for you to become vegan, it will be a psychological one too. You are doing a good thing, i wish you luck on your journey.

It would be more vegan of you to keep it instead of just wasting it, an animal had to die for it so you might as well make use of it! However, if you buy more, I dont think I would classify you as a vegan but for now ur fine!

Your friend is being kind of silly. Lots of vegans keep their "pregan" wool, leather and silk and use it until it's no longer usable. Why be wasteful? If you don't feel comfortable wearing it, and some don't because they feel like it sends the message that these things are desirable, then you can always sell them or give them away. It's really up to you and there are no vegan police who are going to take away your membership card because you're still using products you bought a year ago.

Don't throw it out, if it means alot to you...
Or...if it doesn't..you could give it to someone who doesn't have problems with it being leather and wool....

Most vegans avoid the use of all products tested on animals, as well as animal-derived non-food products, such as leather, fur and wool, whenever possible. So, the keeping of those products would still make you a vegan as long as you go by the guidlines.

if being a vegan meant truly meant alot to you, you wouldn't have a problem with throwing them out...

umm... personally... choosing vegan does have its downsides. we have been eating meat from the beginning of time, and we've been fine. why decide to be vegan now? also it has it can actually hurt the body. but that's just what i say, and.. haha.. i also had to do a report on it. which i got an a on btw. anyways, i think it's fine to have that stuff, and if your friend dissagrees you can tell her to buzz off. besides, why spend all that money just to throw it out?

helllo ebay!

Most people tend to say keep it and wear it.

but you can also look at it this way:

If you sold it, it would likely go to someone who is looking for a leather bag, right ?

So, could it be that you have stopped them buying a new leather bag ? Maybe.

Maybe by selling them you are helping to reduce the demand for slaughter - one bag less.

To me, that would be the "vegan" thing to do.

I know i differ in opinion on this to many here, but hey, thats my view.

And the real news here is that you've chosen to be vegan. The benefits and impact of that decision far outway any decision or impact from your current wardrobe so best wishes with it, hope it works out for you.

You have two options: (1) Keep the stuff and use it until it wears out. (2) Sell it or give it to charity. Once you are no longer using the coat/bags, buy an animal friendly version.

Your friend is silly when she suggests throwing it out--what a waste. Some vegans don't feel comfortable grandmothering in their old animal-based items and will replace right away while others will use up what they bought and then replace it. It's up to you to decide what's best for you.
