I'm 14 years old and I plan to be a lacto-vegetarian. Should I?!

Go for it! Doctors receive very little nutrition training and they are often uninformed about vegetarian diets. You'd be better off seeing a nutritionist.

You could tell your mom that the American Dietetic Association, one of the nation's leading nutrition experts, supports vegetarian diets for teenagers.

"Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence."

Yes you should!
I am a veg. and I love it. To keep up your protein and stuff I just take multivitamin pills. I hate the way animals are treated.

Most vegans are actually healthier and we get are protein and calcium ect.. from other foods such as veggie meat(which is reallly good tasting)

And i personally believe your morals should go before eating habits.

good for you. as long as you do it properly then you should go for it. get books on how to become a vegetarian the healthy way, especially because you are still growing, thats really important. i went veg when i was 13 (i'm now 33), and my parents completely flipped out. so did every member of my large extended family. everyone will probably harrass you at family gatherings, but if you've done your homework on being a vegetarian, then they have nothing on you. alot of people, when they first start out, don't eat all the complete proteins they need to eat. that can be dangerous, so just experiment with all types of veg proteins that are available. try cooking a vegmeal for your family once a week. i converted my mother and sister partially (they do not eat red meat, just chicken and fish) in the first 3 years i went to vegetarianism. show your parents that you can be responsible for your own body and nutrition and that you are not hurting yourself by not eating animals. good luck to you, it'll be tough at times, but well well worth it.

The doctor will tell you not to do it...but go ahead...just make sure you eat fresh vegetables, fruits, beans and grains...and if you feel you must...some cheese and yogurt...try soy milk though and see what you think...the chocolate and vanilla are good...

NO!!! You should not become a Lacto Vegetarian It is a bad thing to be. Yes we know animals are mass murdered for fast food joints but there are many slaughter houses that do kill the stock very humainly. What do you hope to accomplish by eating carrots. If you really do care about the animals you should fight to huminize slaughter houses not become a vegitarian.

i cannot believe the similaritys of the situation we are in. i am also 14(male) and i have been a vegitaraian for about 8 months and wanted to go lacto veg. my mom told me no u have gone too far but i think i will do it anyway bc it helps stop torture which i would love to have happen. i would reccomend you start by synthizing your lacto veg diet by eating bout half the amount of eggs you usually would the first week . then half of that the next and totally lacto veg by the third week

i love how great i feel on my ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet of 5 months, but make sure you know what you're doing before you get in too deep. plan out how you're going to maintain 50 grams or more of protein every day [i eat powerbar protein bars every day] and still get iron. those are the two hardest things to maintain, but going veg was fairly easy for me.

You can do it but you must read up on it and find out what plant sources you must eat in order to replace the nutrients that you normally get from animals. I'm now reading "Becoming Vegetarian" by Vesanto Melina, M.Sc., R.D. and Brenda Davis, R.G. (ISBN: 0470832533), which may help you make a more informed decision.

And remember, you can also claim yourself to be a vegetarian if you just eat chips, cookies, fries... but is that a healthy way of life? The key is to eat a wide range of food, and so far from reading this book (I'm about 1/3 of the way through), I find that in order for omnivores to become vegetarians, they must acquaint themselves with many new foods that they normally don't eat, like soy, nut butter (not peanut butter, but almond butter or equivalent), dark green veggies, Brazil nuts, pine nuts, quinoa.

I guess at 14, you must get your family's involvement in order to make it work; otherwise, you will be cooking your own meals.

You should definitely become a vegetarian. I have been one for almost a year now and I love it. Don't take nutrition advice from doctors. You should research about it with your mom on google or something and I'm sure you will find plenty of health benefits. My mom is getting her degree in health and nutrition and she is a vegan and she cant seem to say enough good things about the diet.
