Have you ever come down with food poisoning?!

Question: What did you eat? What were your symptoms? Where did you get the food (restaurant, cooked yourself, etc.)?

I take the cake on this one.. I have had food poisoning 4 or 5 times

first time was from beans that had sat out all day and not been properly and thoroughly reheated.. 2 days after the meal, I was sick all morning, vomiting frequently and VERY nauseous.. better by the evening.. I know what I got sick from because everyone who was at that meal got food poisoning..

Second time was the day after I ate potluck at a church... so many different dishes.. impossible to say what was bad.. I was a vegetarian, ate no meat, but ate dairy, eggs, etc.. was only sick one day.. some vomiting.. same as the first time...

third time I had JUST come back from spending 3 months in south america.. Never got sick in South america... the food poisoning was either from the salad I ate in the Bogota (colombia) airport (as I was leaving the country to come back to US)... or from one of the several fast food restaurants I ate at right after getting back in the states (was travelling, eating out alot).. THIS time was the WORST.. I was vomiting/diarreah/fever/weakness/chills.... etc.. for over a week.. VERY sick.. saw a doctor.. had a stool sample checked.. Lab called back and said they had to report it to the CDC as it was a very dangerous food poisoning bacteria.. very serious.. If I could have gotten it in the US they needed to investigate.. at the time I thought it was very arrogant of the doctor to ASSUME I got it in South America, but on reflection.. the entire time I was in South America I was careful to NOT use "bad" water or food prepared with "bad" water.. However at the BOgota airport.. they very well could have washed the produce (for my salad) in "bad" water, which had bacteria my system was NOT prepared to deal with..

The fourth time I'm not sure.. I had eaten Spaghetti (I made at home) and got sick that evening.. not QUITE as bad as time number 3... but I did have nausea/vomiting/fever for about a week.. (at least, it was a week before I could really eat normally again)

So.. I've definitely been there, done that

There's been one or two other times where I've been sick with what COULD have been food poisoning..

Usual symptoms of food poisoning are nausea/vomiting/diarreah/sometimes fever..

as there are hundreds of diff bacterias that cause food poisoning, each with diff incubation periods, it's hard to say what you "got sick" from, as it could be something you ate the day y ou got sick, or a week before!!

I've had food poisoning once. Based on the onset, symptoms and duration I suspect it was a mild case of salmonella. Both my boss and I got it at a Mexican restaurant we (used to) frequent. Because neither of us eats chicken or eggs, the usual culprits for salmonella, I assume there was a cross-contamination issue in the kitchen due to improper food handling. It was pretty miserable. I joke that I have a cast iron digestive system (and I usually knock on wood as I say that!) so it really took me by surprise.

Me: I wasn't actually blaming meat, I was blaming poor food handling practices. I said it was an *assumption* based on the most common sources of salmonella. Hell, maybe it was the guacamole.

I have never had food poisining as such, however I have felt sick after certain foods. A few years ago I was sick after onion flavoured crisps!

That's all I have to say really. :)

EDIT: Since going vegetarian, I don't suffer any colds anymore! Result! ;o)

I had it once. I ate lunch at an Indian restaurant and by the time I got home from work that day, I was SIIIIIIIIIICK! Diarrhea, vomiting, gas, cramps, fever. It was nothing nice.

hi kyle i did about 20 years ago, i had some pork chops(yuk!!!) :(
i was always really carefully with my cooking, the food poisoning was so bad i had to have the doctor out, it seemed to last forever!
thankfully since Ive been a veggie/vegan have absolutely no problems whatsoever! :)

twice. the first time, i was before i was a veg, i presume it was from eating eel. the second, i'm less sure what it was, leading canidates are a mango, gauva juice or some red pepper paste. It is hard to know exactly what did it to you when you get food poisoning.

I've never had food poisoning before. I know that last year on my trip to Orland, we stopped at a taco bell hybrid KFC mix thing, and loads of people got sick from that chicken. I was so glad I didn't eat anything there!

Not that I know of. I've had upset stomachs and diarrhea and whatnot, but I've never been to the doctor over it.

Is everyone else's food poisoning self diagnosed or did a doctor tell you it was food poisoning?

Mockingbird---that's great how you didn't even eat meat yet managed to blame meat without any proof or evidence. Unfair.

no, but i know one got that went veg after getting really sick off of a cheesesteak i think it was

Yes, the first time I tried tofu. I immediately hurled and knew the stuff wasn't fit for human consumption.
