It's a book that became huge when pics of Posh Spice were seen in newspapers, whom was holding the book when the pic was taken. People went out and bought it like crazy.
It's alright as a starting point, maybe, but I'm not a big fan.
The language in it is supposed to motivate women to get up and become vegan, to make the change and to feel empowered. However, some of the language in it is sort of abusive, and I think if someone with an eating disorder were to read it they'd be especially manipulated into being even more unhealthy - they refer to the reader as a fat a-word, they write in this sort of style: " HEY YOU! Yeah you, get off your behind, look at your dimpled fat thighs, that's because eating meat turns into nothing but rippling cholesterol and death on your thighs! Look at how fat you are! You're killing animals! You are murderer by proxy! Stop eating animals! Hoorah!"
I kind of find it demeaning and annoying about 2 chapters in, despite how invaluable some of the sources and information they bring up are.
The women that wrote this book are both gorgeous, fit women (their picture on the back cover more than attests for vegan diets, especially if you have seen the actual appearance of other self-proclaimed diet mavens like Dr. Agatson of South Beach Diet fame or Dr. Atkins).
There's some great starting points and some good information. Some other things in the book I found unfounded, biased to the point of completely stretching or fabricating the truth when they couldn't find a source to draw the connection themselves. Having had done most of my own research (but also being fortunate enough to having access to it through the schools I've attended) I know that some of what they say is pure baloney, in an effort to force people into a vegan lifestyle. But other things are totally right on the money.
Also, they talk about how bad processed foods are throughout the book and then in the back of the book they have daily food menus for people to follow and the menus are littered with brand-name companies and (you guessed it!) processed fake cheese, pretend meats and tons of sodium, fat and lard-inducing grossness. And while the products they mention in the back are vegan themselves, the companies that produce them might not be as ethical as they'd like them to be (like BOCA, which is owned by Philip Morris cigarette co.).
Overall I'd give it a C+ grade for effort but there's quite a lot of baloney to dig through at points. I think going vegan and the research behind it is fantastic and thorough anyway and I don't see why they had to hammer it in with the negative tone at points and the guilt-trip stuff.
its a vegan cookbook, w. yummy recipes :)
Oh my friend Scottie, I just bought that book. Not for the diet/lifestyle advice obviously, but for the hype. So many people are talking about it, so I picked it up.
Let me tell you, the first page into it I was laughing out loud, which I never do when I'm alone. The authors are in-your-face about going vegan for health and for ethics, but the book is about slimming down too. Anyway, it's a quick read but well worth it. There is a gross, detailed part in the middle which is a tactic they use to turn non-vegans into vegans but I had to skip over it because I get too depressed now thinking about animal cruelty.
I hear they are going to come out with one aimed at the male audience but who know's when that's gonna be.
Yes, its great. I was vegetarina and thats the book that made me vegan and loss about 10 pounds. I love their straigh talkin and hard facts.
Its very direct, not all waffle crap. -
its not that expensive, and they have two books one for cooking and one for informaiton. - both great!
EDIT:- IN THE USA, there are two books, one for cooking and one for information. - Kyle go to US book store. and you'll find them.
It is thinly disguised Vegan and animal rights propaganda, masquerading as diet advice.
If you already know why you should be Vegan, and what happens to animals in industrial settings, you don't need to read it. Parts of it are funny though, and it seems to be leading a lot of young girls into a Vegan lifestyle.
It's not for the thin-skinned or easily offended.
It's tough love for women who wanna stop eating cr*p and start looking fabulous - just as the sub-title reads. It spells out for you in plain english (with very current and reliable resources) what the sh*t people eat does to their bodies. It advocates veganism.
I love this book. It's a fun, fast, easy read, and I'll reccomend it to any woman who wants to stop eating junk.
OMIGOSH JUST BUY THE BOOK! YOULL COME TO FIND THAT ITS ABOUT TOTAL COOLISHNESS AND ITS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!
I love Skinny B**ch! It's an international bestseller and a #1 New York Times bestseller. (Who ever imagined that a vegan book would one day become a New York Times besteller?!) The authors understand that the average person isn't interested in reading a whole book about veganism or animal rights ethics. Instead, they wrote a book about the health and cruelty problems with animal products and packaged it as a sassy, "tough love" kind of diet book. At the end, the authors provide one month's worth of vegan menus... so helpful for meal planning!
I've heard lots of stories of people who have gone vegan as a result of reading Skinny B**ch. Happy reading :)

It's crap.
For a start I object to the b*tch talk - they use the sort of language that feminists of my generation fought to stop men from using against women.
All the time I was reading it, I was thinking 'just who the **** do you think you're talking to?' - the authors write as if you're an idiot who might just learn something if only you can keep up.
At this point I should point out that when I read it I had been vegetarian for most of my life and vegan for 12 years.
The book claims that being vegan will make you lose weight - demonstrably not the case, as vegans come in all shapes and sizes.
The authors recommend a huge consumption of fake meats, cheeses etc - ie processed food. If you follow their recommended menus you will be eating processed food every day, and on some days at every meal.
I sneaked a look at the follow-up recipe book, Skinny B*tch in the Kitch, and it seems a majority of recipes rely on such processed food too.
I think a healthy diet that included meat in moderation would be healthier than the diet this book recommends.
As for their sources, their view seems to be - if it's in a book and we agree with it, it must be true.
They also claim more than once that the diet they recommend will protect against cancer - rubbish, vegans get cancer too.
If you haven't bought it yet, save your money
It's amazinggg. :]
Haha, it's basically about the vegan diet and loving what you've got.
Always good to have cook books.
