How is Brocolli cooked? What do you add to it to kill the vegetable taste?!

Question: I really don't like brocolli but I want to try cooking some to see if I could start enjoying them like others do. What do you recommend?
How do you cook without over cooking them? and what do you add to it to kill that favor?

If you HATE broccoli, you're probably never going to find a way to like it. But if you're "on the fence", you might try a couple of things:

Make sure the broccoli is never overcooked. Don't let it boil for more than a few minutes, otherwise it'll get soggy and bitter (the same goes for practically any vegetable). Instead, cut it into small pieces and throw it into rapidly boiling water (you can add some salt to the water, but it's not mandatory). Let the broccoli cook for 1 minute---no longer. It will retain its fresh, green color, along with all of the crunch (and most of the nutrients).

Or, you could try adding it to a stir-fry. Again, cut it into little pieces, and add it to your hot wok (or fry pan), stirring all the time. Cook it just long enough for a few dark/charred spots to develop. It will have a completely different flavor than boiled broccoli.

As for flavoring: I like a splash of lemon juice on mine, along with some plain old salt and pepper. If you stir-fry, the other ingredients will flavor the broccoli. And another good (and fairly healthy) way to enjoy broccoli is raw....I dip mine in some ranch dressing.

the easiest way to cook is to buy frozen and then just microwave, otherwise you can steam them fresh too. I like to add cheese, or butter, or for a lighter version a little bit of lemon pepper

Usually steaming them for about 1 min and chilling them in cold water. that will keep them crisp. As for getting rid of the flavor, it's kind of hard. It's like saying 'I want a steak that tastes like fish'.

Here is a recipe to try. I like to cut the crowns of the brocolli off and then depending on their size cut into manageable pieces. I put these in olive oil in a pan and then season well with kosher salt. I cook this down for about 20 minutes on a medium heat but reduce heat if starts to brown. Broccolli will soften as you turn it regularly. When soft-not mushy-I mince fresh garlic and add it for about five minutes.

My soon to be wife loves it and says it is one of her reasons for saying yes....

Butter and salt will kill the broccoli taste. Steaming them is a way to make sure that you do not over cook them.

I like that flavor so I do not know how to cook it to kill the taste.

your answers will probably come from people who like brocolli because most people just don't eat what they don't like. I love brocolli! Steamed or cooked in water just for about four minutes so it isn't overcooked. Try it with a little butter and some velveeta melted on top. It is great raw, as well, dipped in your favorite dressing. If you try small flowerettes mixed in your salads you can mask the flavor of the brocolli. I really hope learn to like it.

stir fry is the best way to alter the flavor. Steaming a vegetable just makes it softer, it doesn't alter the flavor.

You want to cut the broccoli in to thin slices across the crown from top to bottom. You can peel the big stalk and slice it thin across from side to side. It is a little like bamboo shoots in flavor. Get a wok or big pan hot, add a small amount of peanut or sesame oil and cook broccoli on med high for 5 min, stirring often. reduce heat to medium, add 1 tsp powdered ginger (this will make it not taste like broccoli) a little water and soy sauce and cover for 3 min. Done, good and doesn't taste like broccoli.

For starters Blanch it. Here is how:

Cut the broccoli into florets.
Boil water -- preferably Reverse Osmosis Water or really pure Spring Water
Drop the Broccoli into the boiling water
Allow it to return to a boil and cook for no more than 1 or 2 minutes depending on the size of the florets
Plunge it into an Ice Water bath to shock it, stop the cooking and keep the color and crispiness of the veggie.
Drain immediately
Use Amy's Roasted Red Pepper Dressing on it or squeeze fresh Lemon Juice on it and give it a pat of Butter or a splash of Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
DONE.
Simple.
Easy.
Not an overcooked grey and mushy mess that is totally unappealing. In fact Broc is really pretty doggoned good this way!. For awesome recipes check out

I steam it til tender then top with cheese, its great!!Even Mikey will eat it...lol.....

You can steam it and dip it in cheez whiz, or pour the cheez whiz over top.

Of course, adding the cheez whiz isn't the most healthiest decision, but it taste delicious on broccoli.

I find the best way to cook broccoli is to steam it until it is a bright green. If the stem of the Florette is about the diametre is the size of your pinky finger make a slit in it.
When it is that nice green colour have a taste test to see if you prefer it cooked a little longer, to be softer.
For a salad plunge it into cold water to prevent it cooking further. That will also set the colour.
A little salt added right at the end is all I use.
An alternative would be to make Broccoli Cheese.(just the same way as Cauliflower Cheese.)

I steam fresh broccoli and then just sprinkle a little lemon juice on it. I like the taste of broccoli though.

CS-you look different.

If you don't like the strong taste of cooked broccoli, try it raw. You can find bags of it in the produce section already cut up. Just dip it in ranch dressing and eat it!

Boil them with a teensy bit of vinegar. Why would you want to kill the flavour???

Cooked broccoli tastes very different than raw broccoli, Try just eating it raw with a liottle veggie dip, It's fantastic.

Also you could try stir frying it in a hot frying pan with a tablespoon of oil and cover it with a little cheese sauce, I love it that way too.

As others have noted, don't over cook it which is very easy to do if you're boiling it in water. Overcooking it brings out the tannins which turn it bitter and unflavorful.

My personal choice is raw with the veggie dip, you can make a veggie dip with a packet of French onion soup, the dry kind. in a 1/4 pint of sour cream, mix it well and use it like any other dip for chips. It really adds a nice flavor to it and is the healthiest way to eat any kind of raw veggie (Raw, that is)

Brightest Blessings,

I put a ton of melted cheese on them. That makes them taste good. Ranch dressing is good too.

Melted margarine, lemon juice and garlic.
