Are vegans less likely to eat junk food?!
(My brother is an omni, and his diet is terrible, he practically lives on burgers, chips and fizzy drinks. Hmm.. think about all the essential vitamins in that Coke! I'll just stick with my smoothie, thanks.)
Answers: First of all, most junk food is non vegan. And also, vegans are likely to be more health conscious (which is why they are vegan)

Hi Scottie,
I think your right in general. I would guess *most* vegans would be more healthy and less likely to eat junk food. Mainly cos there's less vegan junk foods available. The worst thing in my diet is dark chocolate, my home made vegan cakes and soy lattes. I'm sure they aren't great for me but I bet it's better that a think shake from McDonald's. I think we're generally a bit more health conscious too, since we usually have to think about what we eat. But of course this is a generalisation, I'm sure there are unhealthy junk food vegans who live on a carb diet. Same can be said for omni's, I'm sure there are healthy omni's too.
Love Hala xoxo
I would have to say yes.
Yes, as there's very little processed food they can actually eat.
lol....yes... only if they go easy on french fries, oninon rings, soda, crisps and other vegan delights! ...the point is to eat whatever you eat in moderation, that is the only criteria for healthy eating and not choice of eating habits per se...
MODERATION IS THE KEY!
I personally think they are, a lot of junk food is fast food and there is very little fast food a vegan can eat.
Since becoming a vegan i find I do a lot more cooking using fresh ingredients, and I know what are in my cakes I make.
It is surprising how many ingredients in ready meals are hard to pronounce!
Although before I become a vegan i wasn't really a junkie when it came to food and Ive never drunk fizzy drinks!
good question Scottie! :) x
Thanks Hala :) Your's too! :) x Thumbs up!!!
Yep...vegetarians on the other hand...
not at all!
Is it a swaaaaaaawbewwy smoothie???
In all seriousness though, it is you, that has a good reason to worry about your brother's health, not the other way around.
Definately.
But a lot of the time they are more overweight.
Living on pastas and bread, lots of carbs.
rather than having lean meat.
yes
Not necessarily. There's a lot of vegan junk that you can find in health food and grocery store isles. Snyder's corn chips and salsa, vegan chocolate, cliff bars, veggie chips ( don't be fooled, they just dump de-hydrated spinach, beet, and cabbage juice on them), vegan jerky, vegan chocolate covered spirulina, odwalla bars, rice chips, pita chips, oreos.
Yes oreos! P.E.TA. has them listed on their accidentally vegan list. I won't touch them though. Too much sugar for me.
I call all of this stuff junk food because you don't get the nutrients you would get from sitting down and eating a meal from whole foods.

It really just depends on the habits of each individual vegan.
Some vegans eat none of this junk. Some vegans like myself eat a little of this junk and some of the others eat a lot of junk.
* The junk I eat about once a week: vegan seitan jerky, vegan
seitan jerky, vegan chocolate. My once a month treats: rice dream frozen dessert, vegan gummie bears.
I would say yes, but for my part this is not because of some conscious desire to eat more healthily, but because I can't walk into a fast food store & get a burger etc!
I'm sure if more fast food places catered for vegans, I would eat more junk food. Same with ready meals etc.
I didn't become vegan because I'm health conscious, I did it because of the animals.
Scottie, I am not being a connigit, but I am AMAZED by how many people post questions on this forum along the lines of "HELP- I just became a vegan last week and I am GAINING WEIGHT!"
Then they post how many potato chips and boca burgers they eat and wonder why....
I am not saying a vast majority do this, but I have seen quite a few.
Vegans are MORE likely to eat junk food because often when you're out, the only thing you can eat is the junk. For instance, at a nice restaurant you might be stuck filling up on pasta or chips and salsa. And, if you make a quick run to a convenience store, you'll likely be stuck with chips and candy. People only think vegans and vegetarians gnaw fruits and nuts all day...it's not true. If you convert to veganism as a person on the go (as I did) you're likely to eat nothing but junkfood...
Possibly, but it wouldn't be that hard for me to gorge myself on potato chips, those new vegan doritos, Tings, and vegan cupcakes made with white flour and white sugar. I don't because I *am* concerned with my health and I like to eat a variety of whole foods. But if someone is inclined to be a "junk food junkie" they can still accomplish it on a vegan diet, just with a bit more effort.
Yeah, your brother's diet sucks. He has no leg to stand on if he's criticizing your diet.
My friend from church is vegan because her oldest boy who is (12 I think) diabetic type 1. Her kitchen has the healthiest foods on the plannet inside and I can actually eat in her kitchen as she is a good cook! Based on her I must say yes!
Scottie, my old fiend how are you?
No, vegans are not less likey to eat junk food. Your logic is quite flawed in this arguement. Oreos are a prime example of a junk food that is vegan. There are many processed foods such as boca burgers that have as many calories as any fast food burger. The key to a helathy diet is moderation. It doesn't matter what diet you say you are on you can still consume junk food. Also, not all vegans are health conscious. A lot of people become vegans just for the animal rights issue.
As mentioned above, there are many questions on here from veg/vegans who say they have gained weight when they started a vegan diet.
NO...we are apt to eating all sorts of junk as well...we just prefer to eat less meat than most people, along with less processed food, less foods with white sugar, and products with little to no caffiene.
There are many types of vegans. Ovo, Ovo-Lacto, Semi-vegan, and total vegans. Some eat eggs, some eat eggs and drink milk products, some eat mostly veggies and some meat/egg, and milk products, and some rely solely on veggies and soy. Then there are those who are all in between all of these.
Yes we are health conscious but that does not make all vegans healthy.
Yep! But you do not have to be a Vegan or a Vegetarian to be able to be health concious and eat healthy food.
You need proteins, which are plentiful in meat, whereas being a vegetarian, you have to search around to find it. Doesn't that tell you something. HUMANS ARE OMNIVORES, not herbivores!
