Why do vegans and vegetarians ask for/give recipes simulating meat? Like Vegan gravy powder. Veg 'bacon'bits.!

Question: I'm an "awkward" eater , but think that if you want to eat something that tastes like meat , why not eat meat??

Answers: I'm an "awkward" eater , but think that if you want to eat something that tastes like meat , why not eat meat??

so they can recreate some recipes more accuratly without the "meat" or "gravy" and still have it taste similar

because they like the taste of meat but dont want the death of an animal on their concious

Maybe they liked the taste of meat but don't want to eat it. People become veggie/vegan for a multitude of reasons. They don't all dislike the taste of meat.

that would mean that those people like the taste of meat or the familiar foods like gravy etc
but they don't want to actually eat the meat for whatever reasons (religion, personal preference, allergies...etc)

It's for the texture more than anything. Makes food more interesting-try eating vegetables with nothing done to them all the time, very dull.

Vegans and Vegetarians often choose their way of life based on the moral values of killing an animal for food. So, they might still like the 'taste' of meat - so they have meat alternatives...

It is simply to show the difference of food product. Vegans say "Veg ......" because it shows it is not based on animal fats or products. It is merely a method for distinction of product labeling..nothing more.

Most people don't become vegetarian because they hate the way meat tastes or looks. Most people make the switch because of the health, animal cruelty, and environmental problems with meat production & consumption. So the fake meats make it easy to enjoy vegetarian versions of one's favorite foods and recipes.

You misunderstood why vegans/vegetarian became what they are. It's usually not because of the taste but the food itself. For example a pig has to die for somebody to have bacon but nobody or nothing is really hurt if you have a vegetable based fake bacon. The same goes for burgers, hot dogs, even fake chicken.

Sex feels good, but you don't have to rape someone to have sex. Meat tastes good.but you don't have to kill something to get the same taste. Same story.

maybe like myself, can remember the taste, but now cannot bear the thought of eating the real thing.

Ive never had a Vegan gravy powder that tasted anything like any meat, its like vegetable stock with a thickener in it! So that part of your question is pretty ignorant!

I didn't give up meat because I didn't like the taste, (although I don't think I would like the taste of any meat now). I gave up meat because of the horrific and inhumane ways the animals have to live and die!!!

Even the best substitutes do not taste like the meat it is meant to.

But they have a good flavour, and I found my taste buds changed after a while!

Gravy is an English sauce made often from the juices that run naturally from meat or vegetables during cooking. Hence vegetable gravy!!!!!!!!! or your meat gravy! please notice its meat OR vegetables!

Some Vegetarians like to enjoy the taste of meat.

even thought that might sound sick.

It's like being a pasifist, like Ghandi, but the playing horrid video games.

Because they realise that human's are OMNIVORES, and they are all closet-carnivores, that's why.

It seems rather ambivalent to me. Perhaps their dedication is not as strong as they would like to appear

Well, common sense should tell you that some people still like the taste of meat even though they don't want to eat it because of the torture animals endure for their flesh.

To add variety to their diet and also alot of these substitutes are a good source of protein. They actually don't have the same taste or texture of meat. I think if anyone is to blame it's the manufacturers. They are the ones that name the products, lack of imagination on their part I think.

Gravy is called gravy because of its flavour and consistency so it doesn't matter if the meat part is substituted for veg.

*shrug* I don't ask for them. Recipes simulating "meat" are so 1980s!

Personally, I'm still highly enamoured with the taste of vegetables, fruit, cereals, pulses, nuts and seeds, even after 46 years of eating them and 32 years as a vegetarian. I don't have any time for the tastes of real and/or fake "meat" - those that DO are mostly recent converts, who feel that they are "missing" something. They'll get over it eventually. To be perfectly honest, there is NO food of animal origin that can even come close to the delicious taste, sense of euphoria, sheer indulgence, etc. of eating a ripe, juicy mango, a sweet strawberry, a pumpkin curry, fried parsnip strips, baked potatoes, freshly made guacamole or hummus, just to name a few.

What is this "juicy steak" thing that the trolls insist on mentioning in this forum? Why not call it what it really is? It's not "juicy" - it's bloody. "Juicy" is what you get from fruit, not animals. There's no glory in eating (and basically glorifying!) a piece of a putrefying animal corpse, no matter how f***ing bloody it is.

Personally, I agree with you. I have hated meat ever since I began eating table food around age 2. Even before I knew where it came from, I hated the look, taste, smell, texture, everything. So for me, all these fake meat products simply make me want to gag. I don't want to simulate animals in my food at all. But for those who actually enjoyed eating meat and have decided to forego it for conscientous reasons, I can see how having a substitute would make things easier for them.

because many of us are limited in knowledge/info...burgers, gravy, bacon...all middle american foods. If there were more diversity, vegan foods would mimic it. Of course, some people just have trained palates...even unsophisticated palates and they prefer vegan food to taste like the food they remember liking.

Simulation!!

good question....

because meat is delicious, they crave it...but they need something to make them better than the rest of you... vegans are some of the most self righteous and judgemental individuals that you will ever meet.

Because they're stupid new-age hippies. wait til they find out how those evil farmers get the corn off the cob!!!! The horror!!!
