Can you actually LOSE weight becoming a vegetarian?!

Question: I've seen a lot of thin vegetarians, but I wonder if that's because they were born that way or if they exercise.

Answers: I've seen a lot of thin vegetarians, but I wonder if that's because they were born that way or if they exercise.

Going vegetarian in and of itself should not make you lose weight. A well planned vegetarian diet has the same amount of calories and nutrients as an omni diet. Vegetarian foods, however, are less calorie dense than meat. You have to eat a LOT more veggies to get the same amount of calories in a steak. Some vegetarians find themselves getting fuller faster from all the fiber in fruits and veggies and whole grains. You do need to make sure you're also getting enough calories and healthy fats, however. On the other end of the spectrum, some people gain weight when going vegetarian because they replace out the meat in their diet with a lot of dairy and eggs. That is not a healthy diet!

You can.

But i also know a few fat vegetarians as well.

Giving up red meat, and fried meat. Like burgers, hot dogs, steak etc can make you lose weight because they're unhealthy.

But lean meat (chicken etc) and fish are actually very healthy and good for you.

A vegan diet not only will help you slim down, it will help fight of a variety of ailments, like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and more. On the average Vegans are 10-20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters.
Vegetarians are less likely to be overweight. But meat-eaters are 9 times more likely to be obese than vegans.
In my experience, most of my friends that went vegan, lost a ton of weight. Not to sure about being a vegetarian. Either way- you can still get fat- by not eating the proper foods. There is still a lotta junk food out there that can be considered vegetarian.

It depends on what you eat. Technically you could eat potato chips and soda and be vegetarian. You have to have a balanced diet and exercise to be thin. Mind you if you ate healthy and didn't exercise very much you may not gain weight as quickly.

Well, If you eat healthy and exercise to burn off more calories that you take in, then yes.

when I went vegetarian [around 5 years ago] I lost 20 pounds in the first month or so, and the vegetarian diet was the only thing that I did differently.

So yeah, you can :]

and also - I am not any less healthy than I was before.
in fact, I think I'm healthier than I was when I ate meat. But I do have to take vitamins to make up for protein and things like that :]
