I think it would be better on toast - even like cinnamon/raisin. I have a friend who eats banana sandwiches.
I've never had it on a sandwich, but I've eaten applesauce on toast or crackers before, usually with a little cinnamon too. You should try some apple butter! It's like really thick applesauce with spices.
