I'm a vegetarian...?!
Answers: Are there any foods out there that have meat in them that you wouldn't think they would? I once read something about not being able to eat jello if you're a vegetarian...
Yeah, there are a LOT! Jello is not vegetarian because it contains geletin. Most cakes, cookies, and breads have mono and diglycerides, which is animal fat. Lots of gummy candies will also have geletin. This is only SOME of the food that has hidden animal products. Here is a list of food that is not vegetarian/vegan, (http://www.peta.org/MC/factsheet_display... it has come to be extremly helpful to me over the past few years, I know it's a lot, but the feeling you get from NOT eating the animals makes up for it. Good luck!
If you are vegan, no jello- no gelatin. Made from animal nasties. Other than that- check pre-made sauces in powder form. You may be suprised to find, chicken powder (even sounds wrong), beef powder.
Oh and guacamole sometimes has milk, egg, and (avocado powder)thats weird. I would just check for dressings, pre-made sauce mix. Veggie burgers sometimes have egg and milk in them. Beans are somtimes cooked with lard. I think thats all I can think of.
GO VEGETARIANS!
no jello, skittles, or anything with NON KOSHER gelitan. JELL-O brand jello is kosher :)
also marshmallows
some cereals even do!!!!!!!!!!!!
check ingredients in all soups and mixes etc that you eat and you may find alot of hidden chicken powder etc.
Try not to buy photo paper to print photos on too, because it contains gelatin
Just use regular paper
Oh yeah...paint balls too...
don't use those either...
Anything with gelatin, like marshmellows and whip cream. Some cheese has rennett from calves stomachs. Some wines and alcohols are filter with fish bladders. I think they are phasing it out because most sugar is made from beets now but white cane sugar is usually filtered with cow bones.
A lot of restaurants will cook everything in chicken broth like Panda Express. Anchovies in ceaser salad and worchester sauce. Suet or tallow (beef fat) in baked goods. Even chicken stock in Doritos Salsa Verde.
Once you get used to reading lables it really isn't that hard and you'll memorize which products to stay away from. Good luck.
There is a common problem of foods that are supposed to or appear to be vegetarian (they don't contain pieces of meat, etc.) containing an ingredient unsuitable for vegetarians, such as chicken/beef powder/broth/fat or gelatin, and this can greatly limit the food choices of vegetarians who want to avoid such ingredients. Such foods that appear to be vegetarian should be commonly available without such ingredients, maybe with a substitute ingredient, so that they are truly vegetarian.
I think the meat-like ingredients are used for purposes in flavor, texture, preparation, etc., however. A substitute ingredient could be used if there is one.
