Vegans here are some "pesty" questions?!
Answers: If you found a rat (no I don't have one in my house) living in your house would you kill it? How about a cockroach? A mouse? Swarms of ants? What if they were red ants? Termites? Other pain it the behind pest?
Being a vegan means you do what you can and all you can to minimise your contribution to animal suffering and exploitation; it doesn't mean you sacrifice your own health or safety - allowing animals to endanger your health and safety and that of your family, particularly your children, is not vegan it is irresponsible and stupid.
Though a dilemma, because you don't want to harm life, it is essential to rid your house of rodents and other pests if you have an infestation.
Unfortunately mice don't come into the house singly - they move in en masse and breed very quickly - so catching them singly and putting them outside isn't really a practical option.
If taken outside they will soon find their way back in anyway.
There is no point in being sentimental about mice and rats - they are a huge health hazard and a danger when in your home. A danger because they need to gnaw constantly and will present a very real fire risk by gnawing on electric cables. A health risk because they spread disease - they are there for your food and will contaminate that; mice urinate and defecate constantly and that will be spread around wherever they go. Each female mouse can have 5 - 10 litters per year of up to 13 young each time; each of the new born mice will be able to breed at about 7 weeks. Do the maths and see how quickly the population will increase – you’ll never catch them all.
A better option is to try and prevent pests coming in. You can get a plug-in device that emits a noise inaudible to humans but intolerable to rodents and to other pests like cockroaches; make sure your kitchen is squeaky clean, with no food scraps or crumbs to tempt them in; and try to block up any holes or gaps where rodents might get in - bearing in mind that if you can get a ball point pen into a hole, a mouse can get through it. They tend to stay away if you have a cat, too.
If having tried all the above you still get an infestation you have a responsibility to deal with it properly. Your health and safety and that of your family comes first.
I'm vegan and I would call in the exterminators if precautions failed - just as I would defend myself against any creature - animal or human - that was threatening my health, safety or life
.
i dont thing u have to kill them see they all are lively creaturs ,,, i ll go for the soulution to kick them out but not killing,,,, regards
I wouldnt kill any of them. (just somehow get them out of the house humanly and safely) They all deserve life just as much as us. They have hearts and souls and hopes and dreams just like us. They are not pests either. They would only be pests if they CHOSE to annoy us. Its not their fault they were born a cockroach, ant etc. They are just doing what they need to survive.
Peace and love <3.
I would certainly kill a cockroach or ants.
never a mouse though,or rat.
Im not vegan.
No I'd find a humane way of getting rid of them. If it was something I could pick up and move then I'd do that. If it was a swarm then I'd find a natural and/or humane way of getting rid of them. I haven't looked into it because I have never had a problem but I'm sure there'd be a way.
I've had rats in one house and cockroaches in another, and I didn't kill any of them save for a few accidental squishings in the dark. And my cat ate one of the rats, I tried to rescue it off him but I have taken so many birds off him he knows the deal now so he killed it straight away - so I let him eat it.
I only rent where i live so if the insects get bad I can live somewhere else.
I agree with lo-mcg's answer. The health of my family comes first and I would do what I can to block entry into my home but if all else fails I would definatly exterminate- although I would try a "green" method as to avoid the toxic chemicals used in most exterminations- is that even available?
This is an interesting question, cuz I saved the spider who got lost in my livingroom from my cat last evening. :-)
No, I wouldn't harm an animal or insect who found its way into my home. I'd remove it.
i'm with lo_mcg. if it's a bug or two i'll move it outside...same with a mouse or anything else. but if it's a swarm, i will not risk my health or home. i would exhuast humane resources first, but there is a point when your family becomes more important and infestions can be dangerous.
EDIT: sorry, forgot to include that i'm vegetarian, not vegan.....just thought i'd try to contribute anyway.
I tend to humanely trap pests, rodents, spiders and insects and transport them elsewhere. My only exception is parasites that impair our lives - for example i would comb lice out of my daughters hair and flush them or if they ever had worms I would give them worming tablets, even though both instances would cause death to another creature - i am not happy about it but i think it is necessary - everyone has their limits. but i do my best to prevent infestations so that I am never in the situation of having to chose - I use tea tree oil on their hair so they don't get nits in the first place and am very insistent about hand washing so they wont get worms etc, i never leave food out and use plastic boxes in cupboards so that we wont get mice, there are rats at the bottom of the garden (we back onto a stream) but i figure they don't do any harm down there. We have a bumblebee nest in our compost bin, but they have every right to be there so i have taught my kids to not be scared of them and just to let them go about their business.
I do the catch and release. I get a cup or box and put the bug/pest in there and than put it outside.
Its very simple. - I am vegan.
I've never had this problem- the easiest way to deal with pests is to discourage them from coming in your house in the first place.
