Why did this happen to my vegetarian friend?!

Question: I don't remember exactly what was wrong with her teeth, but I do know she had to have some major work done and she said it was because of her vegetarianism, she was lacking in some area. Protein or something? Do you know?

Vegetarians are no more likely to be lacking nutrients than are omnivores. And dentists are now finding that digestion plays an important role in preventing tooth decay, which would mean vegetarians teeth are probably in better shape.

Chances are she was using vegetarianism to hide an eating disorder. Bulimia and anorexia are both terrible for your teeth.

she needs some milk or protein

More likely calcium

If you don't get enough calcium, your teeth decay more quickly. It's perfectly possible to get adequate calcium from a vegan diet, but I'm willing to bet that's what your friend's problem was.

Sounds like a calcium deficiency which means she was not getting a balanced diet. Very daft. If you are going to be a vegan or even a veggie you must do it properly.

I agree with Jen D some poor girls suffering with eating disorders claim to be vegan just to cover up the fact they are not eating.

Its highly unlikley it was as a direct result of a vegetarian diet.

Poor teeth strength is often hireditary.

A decent veggie diet will not be lacking in protein, calcium or any other nutrient
