Do you find it annoying when omnivores try to give you health advice?!
Answers: It's not like they are educated about vegetarian/vegan nutrition, so why would they even try?
Yes it is very annoying, especially when the omni giving advise is less healthy than I am. - Example overweight, takes more pills, can't do much physical activity.
There is double standard, -
if an omni is sick - "Oh its stress, or bug etc"
if a a veg*n is sick "Oh its because you are vegetarian "
The only ones that do try to give me health advise are here in YA, LOL! Everyone that knows me understands that I am living the way that works for me and that I am a completely heathy vegetarian.
EDIT--And to Mark, I am very educated on nutritional issues. I have been a vegetarian for 17 years now and am healthier than almost everyone I know. Not tooting my own horn--just stating the fact that over the years I have educated myself and found what works best for me.
Everybody has the right to give advice but whether its good or not is for us to decide. Its another thing if they talk about nutritional lacking facts about Vegetarianism. That means they have no clue what they are talking about. Best thing is to ignore or say something nice, if you know what I mean!!
my husband is a medical student and gives me advice all the time even though he's an omni. i accept it from him because he knows what he's talking about.
from others....i guess it would depend on their intentions. if i know they're just trying to look out for me (and simply don't know anything about being veg*n) i just smile and let it go in one ear and out the other. if they're being rude about it, that is upsetting. i've tried to educate most of the people in my life on my choices, so people that are close to me don't question it much anymore. it's usually people that i have just met, which is really annoying because then it's REALLY not their business.
It when it comes as an argument as to why I should eat meat, it's annoying. I quit 5 years ago, do they really think there's anything they can possibly say to change my mind? It's as ridiculous as trying to convince someone to start smoking again.
I agree with Top cat....since I went vegan everytime I'm sick it's because I'm vegan....when I was omni I was never sick because I was omni.
That really bugs me. Other than that I don't pay it much thought.
come on you need meat for iron and protein you hippie.
i'm kidding i'm kidding roflol
Very much so, especially considering I eat much healthier now. It is mostly here in Yahoo Answers where I find people know so little about nutrition thinking by cutting out meat from your diet is going to cause some major depletion of vitamins and nutrients. When in realty, according to the food pyramid, meat should comprise a very small amount of an omni's diet.
I know what you mean.
I guess my question is why all the flack and 'bull baiting' from non-vegetarians asking mean spirited questions on a site devoted to vegetarians and vegans? And why these same people continue to answer questions as though they actually know anything about the vegetarian diet and the nutritional needs of everyone from our pets to ourselves as though we were all the stupid, misguided and poorly informed?
To me at least it demonstrates their own lack of understanding and mean spiritedness.
And I wonder why the monitors of Yahoo Answers do not filter out their diatribes and prejudicial inquiries as they do the honest, informed, responses to them?
I find it annoying when ANYONE tries to give me health advice. None of their business how I live unless I ask them. I disagree with the education thing though, some of us are highly educated on the subject. We just eat meat cause we like the way it tastes.
I take a little bit of offense to this question, because I'm an omni, but I'm quite healthy--probably more than a lot of vegetarians. I eat a very healthy diet and just have lean meats sometimes, not like the traditional american diet. And, I read a ton of stuff and know alot about vegetarian diets (not vegan so much). So, I would actually be quite informed to give someone--even a vegetarian or vegan--health advice. Just because I'm omni, doesn't mean I'm not educated. But, I could see your point it a heart-disease ridden, diebetic omni tried to tell you that you need to eat more steak. Just don't judge all omnis the same. Thanks, rant over.
I find it amusing. I'm the only vegetarian in my family, and guess what? I'm also the healthiest one! And my parents will willingly admit that. A very good friend of mine recently made the switch to a vegetarian diet. Before the transition, she was literally sick all the time, I used to worry so much about her. But once she became a vegetarian, it was like a miracle had occurred-- she hardly gets sick anymore!
Just think about it. Omnivores put a ton of chemicals and hormones in their body every time they consume a piece of meat, seafood, poultry, or anything made with dairy. Those chemicals will eventually make them sick!
The point of all of this is: who would you rather take health advice from? A healthy vegetarian or an unhealthy omnivore?
I know what you mean...I'm the only vegetarian in my group of friends so I get so much crap. Also, I go to a school with a big ag program, which makes it worse. One day, somebody asked me why I was a vegetarian and I tried to explain it, but everybody was interupting me and stuff, especially this guy who is really into ag, and they kept using stupid logic to try to prove that I was wrong for being a vegetarian. It doesn't even really make sense that they bother me about not eating meat because I don't bother anyone about them eating meat.
I guess I'm an uncommon omni in this forum - I enjoy getting advice from the "regulars" here :) My son's a vegetarian, and I'm still somewhat clueless on how to help and support him, so I look to you guys for answers.
I understand what you mean though...we get the same sort of flak on the Homeschooling forum, and it's a pain in the rump.
Its annoying, I chose to be veggie. They eat meat.
My body is not a graveyard for animal flesh.
Loveage :-)
Meh.
It doesn't really bother me. After all, really, who listens?
They can ramble on and on, and all I hear is "Blah, blah, blah, Ginger."
The very idea of being a vegetarian (or god forbid a Vegan) tells me that you are highly uneducated on health matters, so you certainly do need advice.
--edit--
I am far from ignorant on this subject. Simply because I ALSO eat meat does not mean I don't eat mostly fruits and vegetables. I merely don't subscribe to the idea that meat should be eliminated from your diet. I lived with vegans and saw the ridiculous measures they went through to try to put a meal together. Most of the time that meal was not well balanced. I honestly believe that it is not possible to be a healthy vegan and furthermore, I believe it is criminal to force this diet upon children. I have a much softer stance on vegetarianism.
how bout you ask a question that has value instead of trolling..which is exactly what your doing...your hoping a vegetarian will respond so you can bait them....grow up and ask questions that actually have intellectual merit
i also find you very offensive generalizing that we are all uneducated on nutrition and you think because you watched a peta video suddenly you are the master of the vegetarian diet. grow up...kyle
