Is there a subsitute for sugar for vegans?!

Question: Beet sugar is vegan friendly because it's not bone char filtered. Some cane sugar is vegan friendly. The major brands sold in the U.S. (Domino and C&H) are bone char filtered, but Florida Crystals is not. Whole Foods also has a vegan cane sugar that they sell under their 365 label.

Alternative sweeteners like agave nectar, stevia, sucanat and evaporated cane juice are all vegan friendly.

what is un-vegan about sugar? It either comes from sugar cane or sugar beets - both are plants.

Honey is considered not vegan friendly because it is enslaving bees and stealing their stuff. But not sugar.

"unbleached" sugar, sugar in the raw, or beet sugar. There are some cane sugars, too, which were not whitened using bone char, but they hard to distinguish from others, unless you know the exact name brand

to respond to the person above, some sugars are refined with bone char, making them un-vegan.

you would probably be safe just using unrefined (raw) sugar, but i'm curious to see what the other users say.

I use organic unbleached sugar. But you can also look out for turbinado sugar, Raw sugar, Evaporated Cane crystals (Florida Crystals). You can also look for all natural non-sugar sweeteners such as agave nectar and stevia.

Sucanat (a raw sugar) is suitable for vegans, as the animal product (bone char) comes in to play during the bleaching process. Vegans can also use maple syrup (yum!), barley malt syrup (meh) agave nectar, (great stuff- esp. in liquids!) and other natural sweeteners.

I use the co-operative fairtrade white granulated sugar, that is suitable for vegans!

As first answer, otherwises fructous from fruit and veg is more than enough

You can also use Stevia which is actually from a plants leaves and stems ground up. You can get it in liquid, powder, and granules. It's actually sweeter than sugar, so a little goes a long way!
It's delicious!

yes
