Should I become a vegetarian ??!

Question: I am an 11 year old girl who's always considered going vegetarian, but feel it would be too hard. Also, my mom says it could be unhealthy. I am thin already, so it isn't to loose weight, but i still really want to do it!!! Any suggestions??

Being a vegetarian can be a very healthy choice, although it will take some effort on your part. Don't just rely on vitamins and supplements to get the nutrition you need -- these things are always better coming from food. To keep the meat on your bones, make sure to get plenty of protein from vegetarian options like tofu, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes. And enjoy several helpings of fruits and vegetables -- in a variety of colors -- every day to get your fill of vitamins.

yes! you should definitely go vegetarian! if you want it badly enough the extra effort will be worth it. do some research and talk with your mom about the health aspect- it is completely healthy to be a vegetarian...MUCH more healthy than eating meat. you won't necessarily lose weight either, just watch your calorie intake. try visiting www.goveg.com....they have a 30 day "Pledge to be Veg" and you can start there to see how it goes. GOOD LUCK!!!! =D

If you want to, it's good to do but make sure you have access to supplements for your diet. Make sure you will be able to get replacements for meat like tofu or tempeh. You would also benefit from getting vitamin supplements including protein, iron and zinc. Eating protein rich foods will help supplement your diet such as a variety of nuts and other things. It can be hard but if it's something your committed to, it's a great thing to do. :]

you should do what your heart tells you, but read up on it and examine the pros and cons.

I don't know if weight is an issue one way or the other. I actually know plenty of fat vegetarians.

Nope. My friend is vegetarian and got so mad that she couldn't eat meat that she cut herself and became emo.

First, should you become a vegetarian? Only you can answer that. What you do with your body is the ultimate personal decision.

It is not unhealthy. Have your mom check out the nutritional info in the Vegetarian Starter Kit, from the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. They are a group of doctors who recognize that the healthiest diet, and the one most likely to avoid illness, is a vegetarian one.

Decide the reasons you want to become a vegetarian (like health, the environment, animal rights) then research! Read everything you can find. Not only will the information reinforce your decision and make your mom feel better about it, but it will arm you for all of the arguments with omnivores in your future!

Do it in stages, bit by bit as your so young, that you do not know enough about nutrition yet.Do 3 months with reduced meat, than 3 months with no red meat at all, than 3 months with no fish etc until you feel vegetarian in a atural way, rather than a forced struggle. You must be disciplined and not allow yourself to ever go backwards.Don't be too tough on yourself, but remember it's for a worthy, and high minded cause....Good Luck

You should definitely become vegetarian. Not to be mean or anything, but your mom is greatly misinformed about the topic. Becoming vegetarian is only hard for about the first few weeks or so, but eventually you will get used to it. The health benefits are wonderful, too. When you become a teenager, you will not have acne like the rest of your class, but rather a radiant complexion. The most important reason for becoming a vegetarian (for me) was halting your support of the meat industry. It is estimated that the average vegetarian saves about 100 animals per year from being slaughtered and tortured by the meat industry.
A really excellent book to read that will in every way convert you to vegetarianism is called "Skinny Bi*ch" (pardon the language). If your mom will let you, read this inspirational book about why you should not eat meat and it is very convincing. It does contain some bad language in it, but if your mom will let you you should read it.

Hope this helps!!!

Make sure you do it properly. Don't be like the girls who think eating pasta and salad makes you a vegetarian. (Some girl in my class made that comment. Shows how much she knows)

Being vegetarian can be great when done right
you can find lots of recipes and nutritional information online.

Make sure you get all the nutrients you need: (balance between fat, carbs, and protein)
Take a vitamin supplement too, just to be safe. (even though everyone should do that, its a little more important for vegetarians--I've read)

Ok, ill stop rambling now but just know as a vegetarian you still have a wide variety of foods to eat to stay healthy. Look into it.

Good luck! :)

First I got to ask why you want to be vegetarian? To save the animals? or Because you don't like meat? I think its a bad idea either way. My brother is vegetarian and he's sick all the time. And its annoying every time he eats because he is so picky. Eat what you want because you like it. Not to save animals (because you can't) and not to "fit in" because its not worth your health. Do what your stomach tells you to do.

First, take time to talk over this issue with your family. Together I'm sure you will make a decision that will work for you. As to several of the comments here, if you want to become a vegan, that's fine, but I find it confusing that so many of the comments contain lines like 'it's hard but stay with it' and 'go gradually and don't let yourself slide backward'. If this was THE way to live, then why would there be so many comments about the struggle. Wouldn't you feel so great about what you are doing that you wouldn't want to go back? Whatever folks want to do is fine with me, but I don't believe deciding what I eat should be a hard decision in my life. I can be healthy and not feel that I am missing out at the same time. Good luck to all.

I am an average girl who is a vegetarian i don't have any problems and u get used to it. i saw those poor animals getting hurt i couldn't stand myself. plus on the bright side it is healthy sometimes u want to be different from everyone else. lot's of people eat meat that is up to u now! you do what ur heart says i think it is a great thing u to be a vegetarians there are very less vegetarians. I personally have disliked meat i had started to stop eating meat when i was in grade 2 it made a huge differences which are good not bad.

A vegetarian diet isn't actually hard to stick to at all. It is much healthier than a meat eating diet. My advice would just be to research it ahead of time and look for yummy recipes and such.

GO FOR IT!! but remember to get the right amounts of vitamins and minerals that is necessary and to get protein since you are not eating meat

It's up to you. Don't go with peer pressure or family pressure or anything, just do what feels right to you. It's perfectly healthy if done correctly.

yes

Yes you should.
