I've noticed lately that the v/v section seems a bit more vegan than vegetarian. Am I the only one that thinks!

Question: that? Answers tend to be excluding vegetarian diet options (milk, cheese, eggs etc...) Is the vegan movement more popular than the vegetarian diet at this point?

I agree... though that is something that's been a pattern since I started posting on Y!A. The slant here has always been more toward veganism, which is interesting considering vegans only make up about 5% of the vegetarian population. Admittedly there aren't really as many particulars to be asked about with normal vegetarianism (i.e. "Can I eat/drink/use this?" questions).

What has changed in the short time that I've been on this forum is the opinion of vegetarians vs. vegans. As you've noticed, more recent answers omit normal vegetarian options in favor of strict vegan fare. Sometimes to the point where even mentioning dairy will get you a few thumbs down.... hmmm... gives me an idea.

A bold experiment:
EVERYONE!!! EAT EGGS AND DAIRY, IT'S REALLY GOOD FOR YOU!!! LOTS OF CALCIUM, PROTEIN, AND NATURALLY OCCURRING B12!!! YOU KNOW YOU WANT SOME ICE CREAM!!!

Let's see what happens. :)

for the person referring to himself as god... pleasure does not have a direct, or indirect for that matter, correlation to eating... by the way...

And yes, I think the vegan movement is gathering some speed... probably due to the increase sensitivity of the population towards different aspects of life like pollution, factory farming...

Maybe, but it could be because of all the junk that they put in the animals that comes out in milk, meat, and even eggs. They basically pump the poor things full or meat tenderizers while they're still alive! I swear, it's like no animal is safe to eat anymore. I guess that's why I became a vegetarian. You just can't trust the meat industry.

I don't know. A lot of the questions at V&V come from new vegetarians. (usually fighting with their parents over it...)

However, a lot of the answers come from people who have followed a veg lifestyle for a while, and they have a tendency to be vegan.

Everyone can eat beans and legumes, grains, veggies, and fruit. That's why this is a most standard answer when someone asks what they should eat. However they may include dairy and eggs in their diet if they wish.

People who ask questions...usually questions to diss us, ask the vegans because they have a severe stigma. And also, not much is know about vegan diets as opposed to vegetarian diets so many are just curious, I suppose.

No, I don't think vegan is more popular than vegetarian. It just seems to be so every once in a while in this forum.

yes, i totally agree. i thought the same thing. i couldnt cut out cheese, it is my weakness :(

I seem to see a good balance of questions about veganism and vegetarianism on this section.

I'm not sure what you are asking though.

In the UK, there are only 250,000 vegans, but millions of vegetarians. :-)

[edit] I would love to go vegan, I'm eliminating dairy from my diet. At the moment, I can't say I'm missing cheese at all! LOL

No, the vegans just seem a bit more....forceful. I know many more vegs in real life than vegans. Vegan-ism is a very hard lifestyle to maintain given location (someplace with very hard winters) and work schedule. Many younger/student age people seem to be vegan. Older people in the work force seem to fall into being vegetarian as it is more flexible. Just my person observation.

Edit - so God has more of a sense of humor than Vegetarians/vegans....hmm

I am not vegetarian or vegan. I come here often because I like reading the questions and answers! I can defend a good vegetarian diet as I have been on and off and on and off being a vegetarian since I was in the 11th grade. I am considering a vegetarian diet again especially after knowing my father-in-law almost died of a heart attack yesterday morning. As for me personally and I don't know about others giving up cheese would be nearly impossible! Eggs are something I may be a few weeks without, or on the other hand I might have a 3 egg omlet in one day! I could even put in a plug for a vegan diet, but I know I could never be vegan!

Well, there you have my point of view! I know I sure can't speak for anyone but me!

I am a vegan, have been since I was weened.

I tend to find a lot of very outspoken and militant vegans out there. They do tend to stick out as they scream the loudest. So although there may not be an uneven balance of vegan/vegetarians the few militant vegans on this board certainly do make make it seem as such.

There are also a lot of misguided souls who think that the way to loose weight is to go on a poorly researched all vegan diet. Thus will only eat salad, or apples and call themselves a vegan. These fair weather vegans to tend to have a prominence for me as well as their questions are often disturbing and perpetuate the myth that vegans eat an unhealthy diet, lack of protein or are just plain crazy.

I haven't noticed. I am vegan so I answer general questions about veg*nism and specific vegan questions from that perspective. But if someone asks about vegetarian sources of protein, I do still list eggs and dairy. It just depends on what the question is.

Vegans still represent a fairly small proportion of vegetarians. I really don't know if our ranks are growing relative to vegetarians as a whole.

Hmmm, I've not really noticed. I thought there was a balance, but maybe you're right.
I follow a vegan diet, but even when I considered myself a vegetarian, I still abstained from milk, cheese and eggs. I found out how close the dairy industry was tied to the meat (and VEAL!) industry and decided that I could not indirectly support such a cause. I still ate breads and some fake meats with whey and milk products in it and that's why I wasn't fully vegan.
Even though I've elminated those, I still try to help vegetarians - I was once one myself. :-)

Hmmm, I haven't noticed that trend...

(Finally, the vegan army is mobile, and we can begin slowly and silently taking over the world... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)

It's a cycle.

what is so extreme about not eating dead stuff? i find this pretty normal.

Yes.

...Just a little FYI for you guys though, I DID will all creatures of the earth into existence for the pleasure of man. ...Hint Hint.

...You're Supposed To Eat The Animals. sheeesh.

With eternal love,
-God.
