The idea of eating meat is much more "manly" than the actuality of the act as it exists today.

We equate being manly with being powerful. Some people may believe there is no greater show of power than being the victor of a life-or-death encounter. If you are so powerful that you kill your opponents, then you are someone that feared/respected/manly/etc. This can be transferred to the animal realm in that we would consider anyone that could kill a lion with their bare hands a very manly, powerful person. Not that folks ever ate lions, but it does take a certain amount of power to hunt down and kill your food. So, this mentality may have even been necessary in mankind's early development. In a kill or be killed world, power would have been a very important trait.

Enter evolution.

However, it doesn't take much power to sit in a car, drive to your local burger joint, and chow down on a grease-ball burger. We are more like vultures than the lion, scavenging off someone else's kill. So you see, the powerful idea of eating meat is far away from today's actuality. Even hunting doesn't really take as much power today as before. I hardly believe a deer vs. a sniper rifle is a fair fight.

Another random thought, men are "supposed" to be tough and not be afraid of death/killing. You could also transfer that sentiment to the average person's diet. Thus vegetarian men being called "sissy" by some.

But maybe I'm looking too deep into this. Maybe people just like the idea of chewing on pig carcasses.

Eating meat is pretty disgusting. But the manly thing comes from hunting, killing and butchering carcasses. It's barbaric considering we're in the 21st century.

Nothing. The men who believe that must also be very sexist and misogynistic. As for women who believe that, well, I won't even try figuring out the complex confused thoughts behind that stance.

PS: many people misunderstand 'omnivore'. All it means is that we can digest both plant and animal matter...it doesn't mean we need both. If you look at our cousins the apes, they eat a mostly plant-based diet with a little meat every now and then. But chimps don't have access to chickpeas, lentils or tofu, or even grains, so they need that occasional protein boost. We don't.

Because it goes back to the ancient hunter-gatherer days when men would go out and hunt wild animals and risked their lives for food and did you ever notice how its always the man who is in charge of the barbeque?

Edit: To people who find meat disgusting many scientists believe that the reason humans evolved such large brains was a result of eating meat and the protein it provides.

I suppose because the more "meat" or "muscle" a man has can make him be described as manly.

And because of the hunting aspect, and the fact that someone is so brave and heroic for killing a defenseless animal. I don't get it either.

-Hope I Helped! ?

Hellllllllllllloooooooooooooooo scottie! xloveagex

I think it must go back to the days of the caveman when they use to go out with their club and kill the animals and then drag it back to their cave.

I wasn't aware it was!

I think it's because men signature pastime is grilling, and last time I checked, you don't grill lettuce salad! :-)

Because obesity is manly....haha.

Check out this link: http://tiny-news.blogspot.com/2008/03/me... it describes a study which found that men prefer meat and women prefer vegetables. It may actually be a reason why women have longer life expectancy rates.

:P

I personally don't find anything less attractive than men "needing a big juicy steak."
To those who think that humans are naturally carnivores or omnivores, you should probably read this:

My wife does not considerate it manly. She just considers it good food.

1. Because of the sheer primal nuance to it, to enjoy fulfilling the most basic and instinctual needs by whatever available means.

2. Grills ...tools ...doing a job and feeling competent. lol.

Just like camping basically.

Because just like men, we can live without it and be better off :) (am currently fighting with husband, can you tell?)

I consider it no more manly than eating veges is for wimps. I happen to like the taste of meat, it is legal, and it has been accepted practice for many millennium so I will continue to eat it. And do so with a clear conscience.

Rubbish!! We're OMNIVOROUS and are meant to eat a little meat. Personally I enjoy nothing more than a slice of dead cow, medium rare!!!!

In the same way being a vegetarian is a bit "girly". I mean, what is more masculine than tucking into a big juicy rib eye steak? mmmmm
