Vegetarians, what are your reasons for not being vegan?!

Question: Just curious

Answers: Just curious

I'm vegan, but was vegetarian for many years before making the switch.

At first, my reason for not being vegan was simply being unaware of the way animals are treated on egg and dairy farms. I just didn't understand why someone would even be opposed to eating eggs and dairy products.

Once I became aware of the cruelties, I didn't go vegan right away. I thought things like "That would be too hard. I could never give up _______". I had no idea that there are so many delicious vegan foods for everything from cream cheese to whipped cream!

Finally, when I decided that I should become vegan, my parents made it very difficult and persuaded me not to do it. I wish I had been more assertive, but it can be hard to stand up to both parents. So I waited until I went to college and became vegan there. (My parents have come around... my dad has even switched to soymilk for health reasons!)

So, those were my reasons... unawareness, the perception that it would be too difficult, and parental influence.

It's too hard to find the food and it's too expensive.

its too expensive

I love eggs and I love cheese, and butter, and cream and yogurt....

it's selfish, i know, but i love dairy products. plus my husband is an omni and being a vegetarian is difficult enough when i'm cooking for both of us...i don't think that going vegan would be achievable until he becomes more comfortable eating a larger variety of meatless foods. he's of the midwestern persuasion that soybeans are used for alternative fuel, not food. ugh....
i'd like to go vegan one day, but it's just not the right time yet.

EDIT: I've been thinking about this question a bit more today, and realized that I rarely use dairy ....I'm lactose intolerant and when I do eat it i get sick. so really i think i am doing my part quite a bit because although I do love dairy i eat it very, very rarely. i use soy milk instead of dairy milk and only consume cheese or yogurt a few times a week and only eat eggs when they're part of another food......so the point is that I think eventually i will be able to transition to it. i think people should keep in mind that a sustained vegetarian diet will do more good than jumping in to veganism and failing. i think it's better to wait until you're ready, not just when you've seen a disturbing video. if i do go vegan, i'll update you guys =)

No unselfish reason that I can really justify - I just love cheese and Quorn products.

I like to think that maybe one day I'll be Vegan though. I come across more animal-free brand foods and products each time I go shopping. Like 'Redwood Foods' and 'Tofutti' who both do fake cheese and 'Alpro Soya', 'Rice Dream' and 'Natural Balance Foods'.

There's so much choice, I don't see why not. As a vegetarian, you often find yourself eating quite a few vegan meals anyway.

I'm only vegeterian because I think meat tastes nasty. I love milk && yogurt so yeah.

I've been vegan for a few months now. I suppose what was holding me back before was the idea that it would be really hard.

To be fair, it was a bit to begin with. You have to keep reminding yourself what you eat and don't eat and it can make shopping take much longer as you end up having to check the ingredients list on product labels more often.

Then there was the reaction of family and friends. Meat-eaters can be really arrogant sometimes, stereotyping you as some sort of animal rights zealot or “hippie in tennis shoes” who eats noting but lettuce. It’s funny really; most meat-eaters are perfectly happy with eating a vegan meal so long as they’re not actually aware of it!

Because it is possible to have a symbiotic mutualist relationship with animals, they needn't be treated as untouchables...
understandably there is some concern over the wellbeing of the animal in captivity but not all animals at all farms are mistreated. It comes down to being able to choose your dairy wisely.

In the true definition of being a Vegan I can't be one. I believe Local Honey & Local Bee Pollen are very healthy, so use it some in my diet. I also have a foot condition that only allows me to wear certain brands of shoes, all made of leather. I could get around this if I had some custom made but I can't afford that.
In all other aspects I do not use animal products or animals by products.

i believe none of us can be "perfect" in regards to not using resources causing some harm to animals, especially in this society we live in today. i think i'm doing a lot by being a vegetarian. i've also taken steps to cut out other products. i've cut out milk, yogurt, eggs but i still will eat products made with them (like cake) ... (not if i cook at home though, i use soy milk, or free range eggs)... i LOVE cheese though. i know it's not good, but i'm not ready to give it up right now. i avoid gelatin, i don't use leather, fur, etc.... so i feel like i am doing a lot. a whole lot more than people that continue to eat burgers and not care where it comes from right? this is just as far as i'm interested in goign right now. that might change one day but i'm happy where i am.

im 16 and i live with my mum and siblings who eat meat

i like eggs and dairy, and becuase i have to many things to deal with not including that everysingle thing doesn't have some kind of animal by product.
"does these pills contain geletin?"
:the doctor gets a blank stare on his face:

Well I still live with my parents. And my mom supports me on my choice, but i think she did not like it. I know she first thought it was a phase and after 3 months she realized it was not, now its been over a year. And If I go vegan(i don't think my mom would be supporting that much) I would have to like starve myself (besides eating fruits and vegies) cause My mom buys dairy products alot, but i do have soy milk (cause i always loved it). I think when i am older and in like 2 years when i will most likely be moving out, cause I am 16, (18 go to college) I will ba able to make my own choice and i will prob go vegan. But Not sure, it may be too hard. Not trying to be cruel. I do everything to help animals. Even wild. So yea. Hope i answered your question. =)

its really up to you

The reason why I wont is because I love cheese, yogurt, etc.... I dont want meats anymore, but I gotta have my dairy. I could never be a vegan.... I noticed my love for fish has grown too...... :)

For me it was a process of lifestyle changes and I really love diary so it was hard to give it up. I've been vegetarian for 10+ years and recently have started going vegan but I'm not there yet!

Vegans may think they are not killing animals - but they are wrong

http://www.socyberty.com/Lifestyle-Choic...

just a bit of info (no graphic pics) on how being VEGAN actually hurts animals..

wonder how many bugs/ birds.. rabbits and mice are killed to grow soy?? wonder how much forest is destroyed to plant crops

I support free range chickens!! and free range cattle.. NOT factory farms - even hunting is less cruel.
