i wonder the same thing. heres my opinion:

if we didnt eat chicken, chicken would overpopulate. if bears didnt eat salmon, salmon would overpopulate. are we fricken monsters?!? NO, we r animals too, therefore we are part of the food web!! if ur gonna stop eating meat, maybe we should not allow bears to eat salmon, or polar bears to eat seals, or seal to eat fish. i mean THEY ARE EATING ANIMALS.. how gross?? no, its normal so stop thinking ur helping the world being vegan or vegetarian- helping the world would be not to eat those meats of animals whom are endangered. chicken produce quickly, so why shouldnt we eat them? do we want chicken to take over the world?!?!

thats BS. the choose veg thing. MILK is good for oyu, it builds strong bones and teeth. Eggs are alos good for you. And chicken MEAT is too. The majority of farmers aren't like that. only the company ones are. y dont they just randomly check up on farms. they could run the bad ones out of business. telling us to not eat meat is making us eat healthy but not eating enough healthy items. u guys need to stop convincing people to not eat healthy.

To Kyra K: red meats can increase that risk but who says u cant eat chicken? i personally hate all beef products except i drink milk and eat eggs. i eat only chicken, which is good cuz they r overpopulating!!

I felt bad for the animals and just couldn't take one more bit of meat ever again. I then was a vegetarian for a while and then became vegan. I have been vegan ever since...

I know several people who are vegan/veg. and I know that they choose not to eat meat because of the inhumane ways that animals are treated and killed.

Actually, your question seems rude, ("couldnt do it, and wouldnt want to") so whatever responses you get would seem to be fair.

People are vegetarian and vegan for many reasons-
The environment:
The raising of animals for food creates more greenhouse gases than all methods of transportation combined.
For their health:
Meat eaters have much higher rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer.
For ethical reasons:
Factory farms, gestation crates, battery cages, veal crates....

why do you have such free time to wonder about other peoples lifestyle choices? get a job. get over it. live your life let others live theirs.
i dont ask "why are there so many annoying nosey dumbasses ?" no. because i leave people alone.

if colon breast or ovarian cancer run in ur family, red meats(known fact)can increase ur risk of developing these diseases.being a vegetarian can perhaps prevent or at least delay the onset of these illnesses.thats why im a vegetarian.also, anyone who has been treated for any of these illnesses will tell u,they have usually been advised by their dr to discontinue or radically decrease meat-especially red meat, consumption. a lot of people are mean and cruel to me when i explain im a vegetarian-but i have a family history of cancer and i would just like to live as long as i possibly can!theres no guarentee, but im trying to stack the odds in my favor as much as possible.

I started phasing out meat and dairy from my diet because of extensive research that proved it was unhealthy. I was still eating fish and dairy in baked goods when I read Fast Food nation because of my interest in how fast food affects health. I couldn't believe some of the things I was reading. I cross referenced a lot of the statements about feces in meat and puss in milk on the USDA's site. I read the American Dietetics Association's statement on it. And then the motivation to go all the way happened after I watched Meet Your Meat. There was no reason at all for me to eat animal products ever again.

The life-changing thing for me was seeing this video:

http://www.chooseveg.com/animal-cruelty....

The video made me realize that I did love meat, but I cared about animal suffering even more. I'd never torture an animal so why pay a company to do it for me, just so that I could enjoy the taste of meat?

To Sudipti S:
There are so many farm animals only because we breed them for slaughter, often through artificial insemination. As more people become vegetarian, fewer farm animals will be bred, and their population will be reduced.

A few of my friends were vegetarians, so I read up on it.

Most of the age related diseases found in the USA can be linked directly to our consumption of meat, mostly beef.

It takes 5 times more land to feed a meat eater, so more trees need to be cut down, etc.

The way our meat industry is run is unhealthy, and the animals are treated badly.

Just a few reasons.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I have become less of a meat eater lately because of health concerns. You can get protein from other sources without having the fat and cholesterol that meat has (no matter which way you cook it). And I personally feel better by eating more fruit & veggies and pasta & rice than meat. But I do still enjoy a nice thick juicy ribeye or Tbone occasionally - so I haven't gone completely against meat.
I guess my answer would be for health reasons.

well i love animals and after knowing what they are going through! i decided that ignorance is not a bliss! anyway people always say your not gonna make a difference, but at least i'm not contributing to their suffering.. and i actually see things much better now that i turned veg.. so i guess that's the wisest decision i've ever made!

another reason is global warming!

I care more about animals and how they're treated than I do satisfying my taste buds.
Oh - and because its the leading cause of heart disease in America, not to mention a couple other diseases.

Fruits and veggies keep me feeling light and full of energy, while meat is nothing but a brick in my gut. Not my cup of tea.

Sudipti S - You are very misinformed. Go do some real research and stop relying on what the dairy industry tells you.

I want to minimise my contribution to animal exploitation and suffering.

Kyra, it isn't a 'known fact' that red meat (or any other food) can increase your risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. It is thought that a diet HIGH in meat MIGHT increase the chances of colon cancer.

Doctors don't advise breast cancer patients to give up red meat - I was not advised to, nor were any other breast cancer patients I know. I seriously doubt that ovarian cancer patients are told this either. For me, there would have been no point in the advice as I have been a vegetarian for most of my life and at the time of my breast cancer diagnosis had been vegan for eight years

I actually had not met many vegetarians until college. My sister dated one whom I became good friends with. I used to love to argue with him.

As a soul that sincerely cares for others outside myself I think some of his arguments eventually sank in and I tried the lifestyle for over a year and a half.

After this time I feel out of the lifestyle because of my bout with becoming a fundamental Christian. Eventually this ethos feel as well.

But strangely enough my conscience keep panging at me to go vegetarian again. It keep coming up and if I ignored it I know my conscience would have been numbed and it would have been doubly hard to get back to the ethical place I wanted to be. So I listened.

I vacillated a bit over the next couple of years making compromises here and there, even fell off the vegetarian wagon on one vacation to Brazil. However not only did I work my way back to being vegetarian I eventually turned vegan and have been so for several years now.

Honestly this is one of the most spiritual gratifying practices I have ever done. Each day I have the luxury of showing compassion with every meal I eat. Also in time as the animal products filter out of your system you start to feel a cleanliness like nothing else you have experienced.

In my case I started to feel a bit like Saint Francis of Assisi in the respect for my relationship with other animals. In the past where animals had been leery of me many started to approach and interact with me in a way I had not experienced before. I believe they sensed I saw them more as friends than objects of ownership or as lesser beings than humans.

Honestly going vegan has brought 10 X's the amount of joy into my life than the inconveniences of not eating meat may bring.

I not only hope this satisfies your curiousity but will spark something within that will be not only life saving for some but life changing for yourself.

Many Blessings : )

It baffles me how many times this type of question is asked. I would like to think the world was a little more progressive in the sense we would at least be aware of the many reasons people are choosing vegetarianism and/or veganism. But alas...we aren't there yet.

There wasn't one sudden moment that did it for me. It took time, and a several relapses. There were certainly several situations that helped push me to make the descision (a radical punk rock record, many horrible and frightening videos of animals being brutally slaughtered, a new and delicious vegetarian meal), but it's not like Jesus came down and enlightened me and all of a sudden I was "cured." It was a process of personal and political progression.
