I hear a ton of bad things about PETA, can someone fill me in?!

Question: I hear the good and the bad- but mostly that PETA is just looking for attention (PR)??
Because of this- I don't like them- (it's like hearing something bad about someone you never met- then meeting them finally- and hating them- and you don't even know them).. So can someone fill me in- as to why or why not this organization is bad?

Among other things,
PETA is against no kill shelters
PETA provides technical and logistical assistance to shelters to speed up their euthanasia program
PETA advocates the extermination of specific dog breeds in particular the pit bull
PETA targets children as young as six years old in their "shock" campaign thus usurping parental rights in education of their children
PETA lends financial, legal and logistical support to ALF and ELF. Both organizations have been tagged by the FBI as domestic terrorist organizations responsible for more than 600 felony crimes since 1991
etc etc etc

You can judge for yourself whether they are a bad organization or not.

NOTE: PETA was at one time a notable pro animal rights organization. That's why I joined it back when i was a teen ager and becoming very interested in pro animal rights activism. I was very active but resigned two years later totally disillusioned.

In my opinion, PETA does help animals, but not enough. I think they spend far too much time trying to get celebrities naked. Do I donate money to PETA anyway? Only to specific campaigns. Do I wish there were a more feminist Animal Rights organization that had anywhere near the power of PETA? Yes

Peta isn't bad, as a whole. They bring awareness to the plight of animals, which is a good thing. However, they tend to use shock tactics, or extremist thought, and that can lead to a negative image. Peta is not perfect, nor is any group really.

PETA cares about media attention because it's a way of reaching a large number of people with information about animal rights. For example, imagine you had a KFC protest and 50 people walked by and saw your signs. Now imagine that the protest was also covered by a news station... then we're talking about thousands and thousands of people learning about the campaign.

I don't support every single thing PETA does, but I do support them overall. They do a lot of amazing work aside from the celebrity ads and "street theater" kinds of protests. Corporations know that PETA means business and they often agree to PETA's requests, rather than face a massive public campaign against their company. There's so much cruelty in the world; we need an organization like PETA that isn't afraid to stick its neck out for animals. Just my two cents.

See these sites for more info.

Also FYI, the main anti-PETA site was created by a lobby group for the meat, alcohol, and tobacco industries. More info on this group here: http://consumerdeception.com/

I think that Peta , green peace and other groups have their different ways of promoting awareness,,,

their methods may nt be like by alot of people as their method of promoting awareness is rather shocking... but they have create awareness to the masses..

to me as long as they do not cheat me of my money or tell me that the earth of ending / that alien has landed and etc... I think they are OK... basically they are out there telling people that mass product live stock are cruel to the animals and etc... that we as the highest in the food chain .. should do something about it and that killing of any animal is bad...

Basically I think they are better than most crazy group out there... cos these people care for the earth and the animals that live in it...but the way they do it may not be your cup of tea..but what other ways can you think that they should do without paying huge marketing $$$ and yet bring the awareness out there with the same effectiveness...

PETA is a waste of time...

I may say this because i am a hunter but PETA is way to broad in their selection of targets...

Can i ask whats the difference of me going out and harvesting a deer in the wild vs me paying a butcher to SLAUGHTER a cow???

People don't realize the "behind the scenes" of hunting and how 99% of the hunters ARE ethical and treat the game they pursue with respect.

PETA said that hunters harvest game that is not in need of population control...EX - Coyotes, quail pheasant, deer and bear are just some of them...

I couldn't disagree more with the quote from the animal "specialists"....

If PETA was succesfull in outlawing hunting you would see about a 80% drop in funds for the wildlife here in america aone.....

Without hunting, animal populations would be the same as they are today from all the money certain foundation put in to breeding and releasing certain game...

PETA just wants media attention, its like being six and breaking a vase because mommy never paid any atttention to you....the are attenton prostitutes

PETA is a bit radical for my taste. They tend to give vegetarianism a bad name.

One example of their radical ideas - They don't want blind people using guide dogs. They say it exploits dogs.

PETA wants too much attention and tries to make it look "cool" to help animals. Whie I think that animal safety is important, their tactics are anything to be proud of.

If you have heard it, it is probably true. PETA is one of those organizations that is more for themselves than for the good of their cause,

Because they're hypocrite extremists and set the movement back more than they help; people tend to generalize and as a result all vegetarians are given the "wacko" label thanks to PeTA. I love animals, and I'm a huge environmentalist (it's my job)...but their methods and hypocrisy are intolerable.

example: one of their top level executives uses insulin (an animal hormone)...yet they put animals above humans (they're against the research that saves countless lives, and discovered insulin lol)...that's a textbook definition of hypocrisy

The link below is to an episode of Penn & Teller's "Bull..."

I think it sums things up pretty well.

Wow, seven answers, and nobody mentions the big thing. The reason why PETA is getting a lot of heat especially now is that a report came out saying PETA took money from people to shelter cats, dogs, and other domestic animals, then euthanized about 97% of those animals. In other words, the question is: has PETA become totally hypocritical?

The problem with this story is that you can only find it on one site: petakillsanimals.com. Hmm, think that might be biased? They have a table of figures claiming PETA kills over 10,000 animals per year, but completely lack citations or primary evidence, as well as figures for the total number of animals PETA shelters. The figure of 97% is based on a single PETA office in Norfolk, VA. Soooo, bottom line: it's not credible.

People have other issues with PETA as well -- for example, with their lab animal liberations, and boardings of whaling ships.

Sounds like you already want a specific answer, but I should point out that a lot of people like the work that PETA does. For example, they worked in the Michael Vick case, stop cockfighting and dogfighting, blow the whistle on inhumane slaughterhouse practices and illegal poaching, and fight against vivisection and cruelty to lab animals. Whether you like them or not, I think it's no more true of PETA than any other large organization that it exists mostly to maintain itself.

The only people that call PETA bad are the people that don't agree with what they say. If you agree with animal rights, then PETA is not bad.

But, in the Animal Rights movement, ANY publicity is good publicity. So the use of "shock treatment" serves it's purpose well.

Go to http://www.petakillsanimals.com/article_... to find out suprising facts you didn't know about peta.

And go to http://www.workingpitbull.com/truthabout...
to find out how the peta founder feels about pit bulls who make lovely pets when raised correctly and given the exercise and care they need.

I emailed them questioning about the petakills site and they gave me a rinky dink answer.

The only reason anti-peta answers are being thumbs-downed is because they are really big on the vegetarian thing which has blinded some people. What about the other aspects???

I support the AWIC(Animal Welfare Information Center) not PETA

They are an advertising firm that operates tax free. They run a animal shelter with a 90% euthanasia rate. But mostly they make vegetarians look like assholes when they harass children on their way to school or say that medical testing should be stopped.

Peta is an organization that believes too much in it's own hype.

Yes go to nokillnow.com to see some of Petas legacy

This link petty much sums up what Peta stands for nowadays: celebrity photo ops for its leadership and "euthanized" healthy animals. Look at the pictures and see for yourself if the animals are healthy or too sick to help as Peta claims.
