What is UK law regarding food which Suitable for vegetarian ?!
Answers: If a food product is suitable for vegetarian then is it compulsory for any company to have written over the product that "suitable for vegetarian" ? What UK law said?
Heya
No its not compulsory but i know alot of food from the supermarket now have a green label on or a green label with a white letter V on it. If not it usually states it somewhere on the back of the box. I dont think theyre are any laws but i think theyre should be to be honest. Good question =] xxx
From my memory I remember that foods that were vegetarian, would have a little green check mark. and that's way, as a child I knew which cheeses were vegetarian, so would buy that one.
Now if there is a green check mark, I am assuming that the company is also providing further information about the vegetarian guidelines of the product.
No, not at all.
The law says nothing about vegetarians.
If a product is labelled as suitable for vegetarians then it can be reasonable expected it conforms to the generally accepted definition - "No meat, fish, poultry nor slaughter by-products"
But as for all products that are suitable being labelled - no.
I don't think that would be a good thing to push for either. If companies wat to label up - good for them, i'll buy from them, but i don't want to force companies to identify thier products to me - they might resent me.
Hi zak , this was on the foods standards agency website, so even if a product is suitable for vegetarians/vegans they dont have to put it on the label, it would be alot easier if there was as it would save a lot of time reading labels!!
Guidance on the use of the terms 'vegetarian' and 'vegan' in food labelling
Thursday 6 April 2006
There is no definition in law of the terms 'vegetarian' or 'vegan' either at UK or European level. This document identifies the legislation relevant to the use of these terms, other legislation relevant to ingredient listing of animal products and provides advice on labelling foods as 'suitable for vegetarians' / 'vegetarian' or 'suitable for vegans' / 'vegan'.
This Guidance applies only to food for human consumption
there are stricter laws now on what can be labelled vegetarian/vegan.
No, it is not compulsory to use the label.
No, it's not compulsory. I wish it was though because it's make shopping and life in general a lot easier.
Havig said that things are changing for the better in terms of the selection of veggie food in shops and cafes, pubs and restaurants and the labelling of food.
there isnt any because veggies are an insignificant minority within the population and of course there is no definition for what is vegetarian so would be impossible to even start looking at this option. You only have to look on here for five minutes and you will find numerous misquotes. i.e. no animal or slaughter by products is that not vegan? and veggies who eat fish?
