I'm a new Vegetarian and I want meat?!

Question: I know there is no way I will ever ever eat meat again. I've been a vegetarian for two months now and I wanted to know if it was normal to be wanting meat? Is there anything I can do to stop this? I've been eating veggie burgers and my vegetarian chicken and it seems to help! (: Thanks!

Humans are omnivores by nature, and while you can certainly have a vegetarian diet and lifestyle without any repurcussions on your health, I think it's pretty normal to crave meat when you first stop eating it. Meats after all has certain nutrients that your body needs to survive and for you to stay healthy!

Taking vitamins that have the nutrients you think you may not be getting enough of now (like iron, calcium and B-12) may or may not help (keep in mind to find vegetarian-friendly vitamins if you're strict about your diet!). If that doesn't seem to affect your cravings, try beans, tofu and soy or vegan protein shakes. You may not care for the taste of these at first, but experiment with adding different flavors to them and I'm sure you'll find something that helps.

Try searching vegetarian forums (I've linked a good one in my sources) as well, I'm sure you're not the only person out there with this problem. ;)

ya it's hard, but all you gotta do is have will power and think about all the cute animals you are helping....

Yes when I first became a vegetarian I wanted meat- but I vistied the PETA website and became more educated on the animal cruelty involved and in a week's time I had made a 180 and realized that the choice to become a vegetarian was the strongest commitment to peace I had ever know. Congrats to you for sticking it out- keep reminding yourself WHY you're doing it and the pleasure of the meat will seem so much less significant compared to the suffering of that animal!!!

Note: I love how someone just went through and gave all the vegtetarian comments a thumbs down just because! All well...

How did you stop? Slowly or just stopped one day? I guess the cravings will go away, once you have more substitutes you should be fine.

If it's a taste thing -- you know, you want meat because you're used to eating meat -- use your meatless meat substitutes. It may not be that, though. Make sure you're getting enough iron and protein and other nutrients commonly found in meat. Next time you're wanting meat, think about some other source of protein. Does that sound as good as the meat? Think about another good source of iron. Does that sound as good as the meat? If these other things sound good, it may well be because you're missing things in your diet. Be sure you're using a very good and complete multi-vitamin. Keep your diet balanced as best you can.

Ive only been a vegetarian for 4 months and i know exactly what you're talking about. i get the weirdest cravings for the grossest foods... like chicken wings =( but once i have it in front of me, its not as appetizing. I still get them so I'm not much help, but atleast you know you're not alone =)

If you're newly veggie your body is used to running on the stuff in meat like iron, protein, etc. I went the other way... raised veggie and decided I liked meat, but I still can't eat it on a regular basis 'cause my stomach isn't used to digesting it all the time. I would suspect that after awhile you'll get used to the veggie protein replacements. E-mail me if you want some good veggie "meat" recipes.

yea if you want to get your mind of of eating meat just think of cute little animals being killed so we can eat meat

I eat the fake chicken and stuff when I crave meat. Also watching the videos of how they live and die should help curb the cravings. Good luck:) I know it can be hard.

go to youtube and watch a PETA video. That should end your craving. If not, maybe you should take things slower. Add chicken and/or fish back into your diet, and slowly fade those out. I know it is hard, but you should get over your craving soon. Congrats and good luck

I've been veggie for a year and a half, and there are still some meat dishes that torture me when my family has them. The thing is, whenever I crack and start loading a plate (which has only happened twice) I get incredibly nauseous. Eventually it'll become repulsive physically as well as mentally. I make veggie burgers with portabello mushrooms when it gets bad and it always does the trick.

I have been a vegetarian for 15 years and I had that problem in the first year. Sausage was hard for me, but Boca sausage is so good I don't care anymore. After the first year, meat just seemed so repulsive, just dead flesh.

You can watch factory farming videos on youtube if you need inspiration, meat will seem sicking very quickly that way. Just remind yourself of what they are really eating and how it came to be on their plates when you are having difficulties.

But hey, you're normal, you're okay. Hang in there :) .

yes eat veggie burgers and the soy meat products... your body has been eating the same stuff for a long time, and if you gave it up for ethics, there's nothing wrong wtih still wanting the taste.... you also still need protein and other nutrients. i love the "fake" soy products, sausage, hot dogs, chicken, burgers, etc. they're great! make sure your eating a lot of veggies to to get the rest of the nutrients you need. after a while you wont' even think about eating meat.
