Healthy vegetarian?!

Question: Im newly vegetarian and I know I should eat certain things to replace meat but i hate tofu stuff and beans. Is there anything else i could eat??

Ps. I think its really wrong to eat animals. If you look up how people kill some animals to eat, its very painfull and cruel!

Here are some good recipes:

Stir fry- You need cut up tofu, olive oil, steamed veggies, and cooked rice

Get a frying pan and coat it with olive oil. The put the tofu in the pan and brown each side of it. Next, add the veggies. Add a little more olive oil and put in the rice. Mix everything up and then let it sit on the stove, occasionally stirring it to make sure it doesn't burn. After about a minute and a half of that put it in a bowl and enjoy!

Hummus- chick peas, lemon juice, paprika, black pepper, and any other spices/seasonings you like

Puree the chick peas. Then add a little lemon juice, paprika, pepper, and other spices. Then stir. Serve with a pita, with cucumbers, or on a veggie wrap.

Whole foods is a great store for vegetarians/vegans, so I recommend grocery shopping there. You also can get a lot of the things I listed above there.

You made a great decision to become vegetarian! Be sure to watch out for gelatin.

Before you swear off tofu, give it another shot. Try it in different forms, try cooking it in different ways. Google it, there are tons of great recipes out there.

If you don't eat tofu or beans, it will be very difficult for you to get enough protein. Talk to your doctor about a supplement.

Good luck!

Well, how do you think they get into the slaughter house to tape the videos? peta are their workers so they can tape those stupid videos, most of it is an act too.

I was sucked into those, once too.
in like 6th grade.

I know tofu can be bland sometimes, if you don't like it try other substitutes. There are tons of soy protein products that I think are reall good. Products by Morningstar and Tofurky are good. Also try soybeans (edamame), they are a really good snack (or as a salad topping).

Tofu can be extremely good if cooked very well - try it deep fried (agedashi tofu - at a Japanese restaurant), or bread it in shake and bake and dip in bbq sauce. Soy-based veggie burgers and vegetarian sandwich meats are also delicious.

If you really must avoid tofu, then buy a big packet of Seitan, which is a chewy meat substitute made from wheat. Or, you can eat plenty of corn, brown rice, whole wheat, lentils, nuts, seeds, nut butters and chickpeas. Try hummus, peanut butter, falafels - all flavourful protein sources!

Try:
-black bean veggie burgers (don't taste like black beans, they're awesome!)
-Morningstar Farms veggie corn dogs
-cheese
-Morningstar Farms veggie sausage patties
-Veggie hot dogs
-also keep in mind dark green vegetables such as broccoli and spincach have iron which can help replace the iron from red meat
Most veggie imitation meat products are really good, just try some until you find what you like
You could also try putting beans (I only like black beans) in various recipes, they are less noticeable in recipes than by themselves
You could also talk to your doctor about whether or not you could take an iron supplement
Also, you could try protein shakes
Good luck! Just be a little adventurous and try some different options and you will find some things you like.

eggs are a really great source of protein. You can make a ton of meals using eggs.

Try "Smart Grounds"-- or some other textured soy protein. They have a meat-like texture and taste that has fooled my husband before. You could make some simple stuff like tacos or burritos with it just to give it a try (and if you hate it, layer on the salsa)

Apart from just "tofu" there's also seitan and tempeh. Before you try to make this sorta stuff (b/c becoming a vegetarian AND a master chef in the same week isn't realistic) I'd find a good vegetarian restaurant in your area (internet search) and taste the stuff (everyone hates tofu when it's not made right)-- you might find some meatless proteins delicious. Tell the waiter you're there to research & maybe they'll be cool and give you taste testers.

Once you find something yummy at a restaurant, I'd head to www.vegweb.com and do a search for a recipe similar to something you tried there!

And if cooking isn't your thing, the Morningstar & Boca brand stuff can give you protein. But that will get expensive.

I'd definitely give beans another try-- there are bazillions of different kinds, you're bound to find one or two you think are yummy :)

actually, tofu can taste incredibly good if you try the right types. try asian tofu, that stuff is usually good

Hello,

I've also seen the videos you mentioned, and I agree it is horrible!

I also dislike tofu (I'm a vegetarian), and beside that fact, I find it very difficult to use in cooking.

This is what I do to avoid eating tofu:
-My mornings usually include free range eggs with organic cream cheese.
-An organic sprouted grain english muffin with organic peanut butter and raw honey.
-A glass of Kefir
-Some fruit of my choice.

Luch (I'm not able to prepare a lunch, therefore the lack of food:
-Raw vegetables (usually a fresh carrot)
-An ALPS bar (Almond and hemp nut granola bar).
-Lots of filtered water.

Dinner:
-A varitey of baked vegetables marinated in organic olive oil.
-Salad with olive oil as dressing, or homemade dressing from mayanaise, balsamic vinegar, and a tad of stevia.
-Or some pasta with tomoto sauce, or butter and parmasano.

I hope this helps, take care!
