Forced to eat meat?!

Question: so for a wellness project we are suppose to track what we eat for a week, then, the next week, we are given a list f what we need to eat that is "perfect nutrition", and we have to follow it. We then enter the data into a computer and it will show us the difference in our nutrition between the 2 weeks. I am a vegetarian and the 2nd week i am required to eat meat. out of the 15 people in my wellness class 2 of us are vegetarians and we tried to explain to the teacher how we could still have good nutrition w/o meat, and it wasn't fair to force us to eat meat. She said if we didn't do it we would get a 0 for the project. What should I do? do you think this is fair?

talk to the teacher again- if he/she is still unwilling tell the teacher you are informing the school district. You shouldn't have to lie about this- you need to press the subject. The teacher enforcing this- is unacceptable! What if a particular family didn't have the money to support this new diet the school is putting them on?? That would result in a zero?? I'm sure he/she can assign you and your friend a different assignment. If the school district or board, is taking to long- don't do the assignment, and wait for them- your grade will be corrected!

Go to the administration at your school. No teacher can force you to do something that is against your beliefs. If you're in high school it would be the principal - college it would be a dean or your student advisor.

Definitely not fair...They'd be unhappy if they were forced to ...I don't know... Drink a cup of blood to see how much iron they absorb...? Eat human flesh because they were testing if it was nutritionally better than cow meat...? That's the equivalent, isn't it? I agree, go to your highest supervisor.

If the teacher and on-site school administration (principal) are uncooperative and unwilling to step in, I suggest contacting the Superintendent of your school district's School Board. With the internet, that can be done by going online to your school district's website and look or the Superintendent's email or by selecting the "Contact Us" link. I would also send a written letter to the teacher, principal, and school district School Board describing the situation and the steps you have taken so far to have this resolved.

Although high school teachers may require a project to be completed, there has to be a compromise since you would be breaking your beliefs (whether personal or religious) and that is a BIG no-no.

Even students in Biology can opt-out and not participate in the actual dissection of the lab; an alternative assignment would need to be completed instead.

If you have gone to the teacher and principal and have not been helped, get your parents to get involved. Have your parents contact the school and district since the assignment is violating your beliefs and an alternate project needs to be assigned.

Have your parent(s) speak with the teacher and the administration. They cannot make you eat meat. They would not be able to make a Jewish person eat pork, and they cannot make you eat meat.
The other option is to just lie about it. How on earth are they going to check?

The teacher can't follow you around 24/7 simply lie and don't eat the meat.

Plus, talk to the principal. Ifthat doesn't work take the 0 for the assignment. Report the teacher to the district. Teachers are not allowed to tell kids what to eat.

I'm going with the get parents involved group. They can't force you to eat something you don't want to do, and you shouldn't have to lie for a class project. Are you veg for religious purposes, because then that would count as religious discrimination, and you can whip out the student manual.

You definitely can't be forced to eat meat b.c it;'s against your beliefs any more than they can force a jew to eat pork. You need to make that clear to your teacher that it violates your rights and freedoms and you won't do it.
Ask your parents to talk with the teacher, some adults will not respect kids and need to hear it from an adult to put them in their place. If not-Keep on going higher! Go over her head, past the deane!
Whatever you do, don't give in!
She has no right to make you eat meat and it's definitely NOT more healthy for you lol. Show her high protein foods, and the proof and then use that as an alternate.
Plus, what if you had a food allergy ? what if red meat or any meat made you sick if you have a heart problem?
Teachers shouldn't be allowed to tell u what to eat that's up to your parents! and i'd get your parents involved if I were u.

I cant believe they're threatening to take out points on your grade for you following your beliefs. That's ridiculous. They are obviously very misinformed to believe you have to have meat to obtain a balanced diet, theres no other way around it.
Get your parents to talk to the teachers if they're not listening to you. And if they're still not willing to listen, don't participate in that one anymore and find a more open minded one to go to. Or I guess you could just say you ate meat...but then that wouldn't be standing up for your beliefs...

that's discrimination
Tell your teacher you will go to the department of education. In my experience as soon as you involve a politician people will go out of their way to do the right thing. They wouldn't force a muslim to eat pork. Christ that makes me angry.

Force to eat the butchered flesh of another beings - is a SERIOUS ABUSE.
It is worst than raping them alive ...physically nor psychologically.

Would you give your own flesh to others to eat? or
Would you agree if something / someone eat your flesh? or
Would you agree if someone do "unnatural act" towards you?

Your teacher should NOT be doing that!! OMG!!

To force a vegetarian to eat meat is wrong!!

I'm so sorry for you. NOBODY has the right to force you to eat meat!!! NOBODY!

Get supportive people involved!!! Get the support of friends and family!!

Best wishes, all the best!!!

[edit] what your teacher is doing is ILLEGAL! Please don't let him get away with it

Haha, your teacher is a complete idiot. He thinks that he knows what the "perfect" diet is?

Fist of all, what he is trying to do to you is ILLEGAL. He thinks that forcing his "ideal" diet on you is a form of education? What a vile and disgusting crock he is.

I'd recommend that he actually get an education in dietetics or at least research veg diets before he has the nerve to do what he's doing.

No teacher can force you to eat meat...don't tolerate her rules when it attacks your beliefs, health and diet...all of which are none of her business. Go to the school board or superintendent. If all else fails...contact your Congressman for your state. You can substitute meat with tofu and soy based products...but personally I would challenge this teacher

just lie. write down that you ate meat and go have some legumes or whatever. she's not going to stand over you and watch you eat the meat, right?

and by the way, i'm taking a college nutrition class, and your teacher is dumb as rocks if she thinks you need meat to get your nutrients.

and you know, the more i think about this, you really should get the principal or dean involved. it's just not right. maybe you and the other veggie can go to administration together. just to prevent this from happening in the future...

Its a elective course. Right. You signed up for it so you must take the 0. It won't cause you to flunk. Veggies almost never say why they are Veggies or Vegans. As a freshman how did you come up whit why you don't want to eat meat. Just nosy I guess, not condemning you. To each his own. When you start dating only date veggies. Cause meat eaters will give you grief. Good Luck

Say you will substitute it with meat substitutes. It is your right not to eat meat. Also, if the dean says that he wont deal with it than you can say that it is bulling. Harrasment. Illegal. They arn't allowed to fail you, and they can't force you to do anything. Otherwise just make it up. say you ate it. Or tell your parents. They do a charm when talking to teachers.

if you get a 0 report her.

As others have suggested you need to talk to the principal/dean and explain the situation. Do not take no for an answer, just because you are a minor, does not mean that you deserve to be bullied into eating meat.

Just b/c you friend did not get good results from speaking to the Dean, does not mean that you will receive the same. I suggest you find the paper written by the American Dietetic Association(a leading authority on nutrition) which state that a properly planned vegetarian diet is nutritionally adequate. Your teacher is pushing her own beliefs on nutrition, instead of relying on real facts. If the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada state that a vegetarian diet is healthy and nutritionally appropriate, that should out rule any reason the teacher(who probably has no nutritional training at all) would have for making you eat meat.

Although it is preferable that you handle the matter without your parents running to your defense, sometimes it is necessary, as a child you are not taken as seriously and in most cases your parents will be. If the dean refuses to listen to your complaints by the end of the meeting, do not get upset, simply thank him/her for his time and say you'll be taking the matter to the superintendent of schools.

You need to stick to your principals. Grades are important, but not as important as being able to have a set of beliefs and being able to practice them without discrimination. Fight for what you believe in, stand your ground and show others that you are not going to cave into bullying or harassment(which is what the teacher is doing by threatening you with a zero)

Sounds like you have answered your own question then. Speak to the Dean. Its a shame it cost you three points to ask a question you already had the answer to.
