Do you think we get enough nutrients?!

Question: I have been a vegitarian for six years. My parents and some of my friends bug me and say that I won't live very long because I'm not getting enough nutrients and stuff that we get from meat.
I take MultiVitamins everyday, but is that enough?
I want to be healthy, but I will not eat meat.
What do you think?

Meat doesn't have very many good sources of nutrients. For one pound of beef for example- there are 64 grams of protein 87 grams of fat over 1 thousand calories and no vitamin A about 6.7 mg of iron
Daily amount of protein for 5'1" is 21 grams
For 5'5" is 25 grams
That being said: you can get all of that from veggies
Besides- eating meat- ( an excess amount of protein for every 2 grams per kilo of weight you go over) could put you well on your way to a toxic level of ammonia in your liver. Also high levels of protein cause calcium loss which leads to osteoporosis.
So you will live longer- and healthier- and with a lower risk for heart disease and cancers.
So as long as your not filling up your body with junk food, you should be getting all the nutrients you need. And a muliti would hurt you it could only help you. :)

Your fine. Vegetarians are actually healthier than meat eaters. To reassure them, and yourself, go to your doctor for a blood test. This will tell you what your lacking. Iron is usually the biggest problem. So have heaps of nuts and spinach... ect... But otherwise. your very healthy and will live to be old. Don't listen to people who tell you otherwise. Just do the usual thing other people do. Exercise and sleep and stuff.

yes, a healthy vegetarian diet gives you all the nutrients. - tell you family and friends, that eveyrone is going to die! - BUt you'll just have less medical problems before you do!

I think you're fine, just eat lots of soy and tofu to make up for protein.

My younger brother and sister are on high blood pressure meds and cholesterol meds. They are meat eaters. I'm a 52 yo vegetarian. I have normal blood pressure and my cholesterol level is that of an 18yo. This should answer your questoin.

well if your school has alot of health lessons like my school, you probably do, so i recommend having a very experienced person tell you what you need and not what what your parents and friends think.

My grandpa is just like that, hahahah. He sent me this whole weird website devoted to calling vegans unhealthy and stupid and incompetent... anything you could imagine.

Anyway, don't worry; you're taking a multivitamin, so just make sure you're eating a balanced diet with lots of greens, calcium, iron, b vitamins, stuff like that. Avoid processed food, make your own meals if you can afford the time.

Odds are you'll live longer than most meat-eating Americans so long as you keep your diet healthy ;p

Dont listen to your parents and friends, i didnt! THEY wont live long because their ateries will be clogged with fat, and they will probably have diabetes at some stage or be overweight. Plus their eating all the hormones that are pumped into meat. Girls who eat meat have a higher chance of getting breat cancer. Also meat eaters have a higher risk of dementia. They could also die from poisoning from contaminated meat! Yuck! Vegetarians and vegans are known to be better in bed... and have clearer skin to. Just tell them that next time, we have been proven to live longer and healthier lives. Dont worry, your probably getting enough nutrients from taking a multi-vitamin. If your not your body will tell you. When i first became a vegan i was dizzy all the time and had blackouts, which i found out i wasnt getting enough iron. So once i took it i felt better, and have had no problems since.
Enjoy your long and healthy life as a vegetarian, dont let anyone put you down for it, they are jealous that they are to weak to not eat meat! Oh and thanks for helping the environment and helping to preventing world hunger!
God bless you xoxo

If you're trying, you are making an effort and are probably doing pretty well.
As for your friends and family, it is actually a fact that vegetarians actually live longer. :) Just make sure you get protein and iron, the two things you're body will miss most when it doesn't eat meat. Vegetarian specialty foods are packed, and so are nuts beans and all that stuff.

But I'm sure you know that. You've been at it six years, congrats! Thats 4 more than me. ;)
