Do you think being a vegan is a selfish thing to do ?!

Question: Do you think being a vegan is a selfish thing to do !?
If vegetarians would just stop reproducing themselves, then that would've help the earth alot more!. The human population is projected to top at 12 billion by the end of this century!. Vegan or not, humans are snuffing out the existance of every other animals on earth in this third great mass extinction!. Vegans mostly just worry about their own heath for their own selfish reasons, and not for the welfare of the planet as a whole!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You are quite wrong about what vegans worry about!. For one, the term "vegan" implies a moral concern for animals!. Ethics are the primary reason for veganism, with health benefits being a happy side effect for most vegans!.

But, unselfish environmental and political concerns are often part of the decision to be vegan as well!. The UN's IPCC agrees that intensive animal agriculture has a bigger negative effect on global climate change than all forms of transportation combined!. One leading environmentalist compared switching from a meat-centric diet to a vegan diet to switching from driving an SUV to riding a bike!. It's one of the most impactful decisions an individual can make for the welfare of the planet as a whole!.

also, the majority of the world's arable land is currently devoted to crops grown to feed livestock!. If we stopped eating meat, or at least cut down on it sharply, we could put that land to use growing food for hungry people the world over!. That's a benefit to the planet as a whole!.

Intensive animal agriculture is a primary reason why millions of acres of irreplaceable tropical rain forest are mowed down every year!. Demand for beef makes it profitable to switch rain forest land to cropland for animal feed or grazing land for cattle!. If demand for beef was eliminated the bleeding out of the rain forest could slow!. Vegans are doing what they can to reduce the demand for beef for a variety of reasons, but the knowledge that the destruction of the rain forests is a leading cause of extinctions is often on of those reasons!.

The human race needs for some people to produce offspring and for some people to choose not to!. Assuming that you're not a proponent of voluntary human extinction, you must recognize that some people need to reproduce to keep our species alive!. Some people choose not to and some of them choose it for just the reasons you're describing!. I'm unclear, however, on why you believe that vegetarians or vegans somehow have an additional responsibility to save the planet or to keep human population in check!. It's everybody's responsibility to minimize their impact on the earth and vegans are already doing a lot more than your average fast-food eating American!.

Please don't ascribe motives you don't even understand to a group of people you clearly don't know much about!. Saying we "mostly just worry about their own health for their own selfish reasons" is just silly and shows that you're not really aware of what veganism is all about to begin with!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's ridiculous, I'm a vegan and I plan to adopt (as opposed to give birth physically to) children one day, so I am not going to be contributing to the growing surface population!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Um no vegans are not being selfish!. I am not a vegan but I do not agree with your agrument!. They have their own standards on how this Earth should be, but I do understand how they can be a little too drastic with their platforms!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's kind of a generalization to say that vegans are only concerned about their health, don't you think!? I know a number of vegetarians and vegans who made the switch for environmental reasons alone!. (And this includes my environmental science teacher!)

Organizations like Greenpeace promote vegetarianism as an effective way of helping the environment!. A report by the University of Chicago in 2006 found that adopting a vegan diet has a greater impact in the fight against global warming than switching to a hybrid car does!. also in 2006, a major report by the United Nations said that raising animals for food is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global!."

I agree that population control is an important issue!. But I don't think being vegan is selfish at all!.!.!. quite the opposite!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Are you really that daft!?

Cows cause a whole lotta ozone related pollution!. If we refuse to support the farming and breeding of them to protect the environment and the continuous suffering, that is somehow selfish!?

Wake up, lady!. What you have said is utterly ridiculous and makes no sense! Veganism actually promotes looking after the planet as a whole - NOT just looking after animals or the individuals that have made that dietary/lifestyle choice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Being a vegetarian makes me feel healthy and comfortable!. It saves me from hospitalization and from any expenses when it comes to health maintenance!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think vegans are the most unselfish people I know!. I think you will find that the majority of vegetarians/vegans don't eat meat because they dont want to contribute to the suffering of animals and to help the environment!. What is selfish about that!?

Maybe you should suggest to the non-vegetarians that they stop reproducing as their off spring will be brought up eating meat which will be more detrimental to the environment!.

What are you going to do to help solve this problem!?

The fact that the human population may top 12 billion at the end of this century has absolutely NOTHING to do with being a vegetarian/vegan/meat eater!. or any dietary preference!.

I personally think this sounds like a troll question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's difficult to answer this question, because it contains generalizations and poor logic!. I would assume that vegans are mostly self-less and more aware of various social and ecological problems compared to those who go through life without considering the impact of their daily purchases!.
Many vegans aren't health-conscious!. I can't speak for others but I started out as a vegan for ethical reasons!. I thought eating meat was selfish, and I didn't even know about factory farming or that being veg*n could be healthier!. I have to admit I'm totally into my own health now, however I still maintain that animals' lives are valuable and we should protect them from harm as much as possible!. I consider myself to be an environmentalist!. I buy locally grown food (in Cali), and when i go out to eat, I bring tupperware from home for my leftovers!.
I don't have any children but I'm not opposed to it!. In my experience, lots of vegan guys don't want kids, and that's part of what has stopped me so far!. If I do have children, I will try my best to be low-impact!. I won't argue if it is selfish or not, but I would be proud to raise a vegan family!. Two people creating *only* two more people is not going to raise the population on this planet!.
I would go on a tangent here about the need for global birth control and sex education, but I'll save the rest of my energy for a well-intended question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan and I plan to never reproduce!
The only thing I plan to adopt is rainforest acres in the amazon to save from deforestation!.
I have never met a vegan that wasn't about saving the planet!.
Veganisim I believe is a lifestyle!. That is why there are so many vegan certified products out there!. Most than just what goes into our bodies!. I never even considered my health when I became vegan- I thought I was putting my life on the line at first before I did some research!.
So to answer the question, regardless of if it is selfish or not, at least they are not aware they are helping save the planet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

i'm not a vegan or a vegetarian !.!.!. though i fully understand the concept !.!.!. and i still have no idea what kind of point you are trying to make because you are contradicting yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Lol, woah! That is a little ridiculous!. I would say that vegans are pretty unselfish, I know that when I finally take that step that it will be hard to let go of certain foods!. But I want to do it for the animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are millions more omnivores having too many children than vegans!. Your argument is specious and poorly reasoned!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If i believed you had any sort of education or ability to understand, i would tell you about the relative pollution between animal rearing and agriculture!.

But i will not bother!. Quite simply, there is no point!.

EDIT: Oh, i get it now!. New account yesterday, private Q&A, first thing you do is insult vegans!.

No need to say any more eh !?Www@FoodAQ@Com

No lots of vegans are getting into the environmental stuff these days!. It was veganism that made me care about the environment, and now it is my priority!. But I had decided not to breed years before then!.

Anybody who has realised that having children for us in the west is a really bad idea should look into the voluntary human extinction movement!.
http://www!.vhemt!.org/Www@FoodAQ@Com

We need to breed humans that are vegan from the start, our movement shall grow and grow!. We will have vegans in the middle east, Asian, and even in the arctic areas!. We will show our thorns to any meat-eater who comes our way with violence; nature and the environment requires us vegans as its source of defense!. We vegans are the munition, the new breed of superhumans, the new evolution!. We do not sympathize for the animal who kills out of cruelty (knowingly) and not survival!. It is a time of economic downfall, we need to make our voices heard now! A vegan without action is nothing more than just trendy, a piece of leather!. A vegan in action is nothing more than a terrorist!. Or so they say!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's interesting you say that, because:

a) Veganism IS environmentalism!. Regardless of one's reason to be vegan, they are doing more to protect the planet than individuals who are non-vegan!.

b) Vegans (as a population) have a higher average IQ than non-vegans (as a population), and there's an inverse relationship between parental IQ and the number of children birthed!.

So, not only is veganism the LEAST selfish of lifestyles (between vegans, vegetarians, and non-veg*ns), but it also exempt from blame for the overpopulation of stupid people in the world!.

Have a nice day!Www@FoodAQ@Com

WHAT!?!

First of all, plenty of omnivores have kids--aren't they selfish, too!? And there are a lot more omnis dragging their lardass kids to the Murder King or McDeathburger than there are vegan parents!. It isn't vegans snuffing out the lives of the animals--it's omnivores!.

Second, many vegans do care about the animals and about the planet!. Most of the vegans I know do so because of the animals and the planet; their health is a bonus!.

Third, I'm childfree!. Are you!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

That doesn't even make any sense!. You're really weird!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
