Vegetarians/Vegans & Food Allergies?!

Question: Vegetarians/Vegans & Food Allergies!?
I'm not a vegetarian/vegan but am genuinely curious and in no way bashing your choice!.

How do you deal with food allergies!?
I'm allergic to soy, green beans, peanuts, peas and corn!. My doc said I should avoid all beans (legumes)!.

How would someone survive being a vegetarian while being similarly allergic to foods like I am!?

~ I can't drink soy milk (and I actually like it!)
~ protien from beans is pretty much out
~ Peas & Corn were my 2 fave veggies as a kid

Just wondering how you would cope with being allergic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You'd have a pretty restricted diet with all those allergies and being veggie! But it would still be possible; there's seitan, a protein made of wheat, and if you're veggie then you can still have eggs and dairy for protein!. Vegan would be harder, there are still things like seeds and nuts other than peanuts for protein!. You'd have to eat a diet full of tonnes of different foods to get all the protein needed!. I'm veggie, and my boyfriend (omni) has a nut allergy, so I don't eat any nuts at all!. It's hard to cook for him as well, because nearly all dried beans, tvp, seeds etc!. have nut warnings on them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well you are either vegan or you're not; vegans are also vegetarians but vegetarians aren't vegans (vegans eat no eggs or dairy and there's a lot more to the vegan lifestyle than most vegetarians would take it)!.

So if you don't eat eggs and dairy, there's tons of protein in most vegetables (including broccoli), whole grains (like quinoa or whole wheat pasta)!.

You can try making your own seitan, which stands in for meat as well as tofu or tempeh in most recipes - you can make it taste just like the "real" thing if you use seitan, especially the really good mock BBQ pork recipes!.

Seitan is made at home out of flour, so you don't have to even buy anything or go out of your way to make it!. It's really easy to make once you get the hang of it, and it'll make all your favorite recipes adaptable!.

Just to make sure you should tell your doctor about your diet change; he should be aware of it and might give you further recommendations based on your allergies and medical history!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
