I recently became a vegetarian and I have some questions?!

Question: I recently became a vegetarian and I have some questions!?
ok so i recently decided to become a vegetarian!. I never really ate a lot of meat so it hasn't been THAT hard for me to cut it out completely!. I have decided that I will still eat diary products however!. But I have some questions!.

1!. How do I still get all the protein and things I would normally get from meat!?
2!. Is it true you loose weight when you become vegetarian!?
3!. How can I convince my dad to buy vegetarian foods for me!?
4!. Im not into tofu or the veggie burgers but what are some good foods that I can eat that are healthy and vegetarians!?

Thanks so much! :]Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi, I love new veg*ans!!!

Meat is NOT the only source of protein!. You can get it from nuts, seeds, eggs (if you eat them), cheese, yogurt, soya milk, tofu, cows milk!.!.!.the list goes on!.
Here is a useful link about protein:

Personally I did lose weight since going veg!. It is because I am more health conscious!. Vegetarians tend to be leaner!. A good vegetarian diet is very healthy!. Note that cheese pizzas and chips are veggie but do not constitute a healthy diet!.

Eat a variety of foods, like wholegrain cereals, soya products, fruit and veg!. If you balance your diet there should be no problems!.

You can cut meat out straight away or do it gradually!.

About iron- these are good veggie sources of iron:

best wishes, it's easier than you think!

if you are a teenager , make sure you are not a strict vegetarian !! as you still drink milk and eat cheese and stuff like that because they are very important for your health !.
as a teenager i became a vegetarian and i stopped growing :( you need meat !Www@FoodAQ@Com

1!. you can get the protein you want from tofu, soy beans, any other alternatives for meat!.
Meat alternatives are an inexpensive source of protein
and are high in fibre and low in fat!.
Use dry roasted nuts and seeds without added oils or salt!. nuts are really good and have a lot of protein in them!.
2!. you do loose some weight since you dont have the fat/calories from the food that you used to eat!.
3!. tell him that you dont really like the thought of eating meat and that there are many choices of food for vegeterians with lots of protien and its also healthy for you!. people have created food for vegeterians and espcially for them since they dont eat meat and i think that its very thought out!.
4!. here is canada food guide which lets you explore new things and it tells you all about the diiferent kinds of foods out there that you can eat if you are a vegeterian, and if you dont like tofu they have the best alternatives for anything!.

1!. A good way to get protein is through nuts or peanut butter!. If regular peanut butter is too fattening for you then check out PB2 at http://www!.bellplantation!.com/ !. It's a lot healthier but still has the protein!.

2!. Yes you can lose weight by being a vegetarian depending on what you ate before and eat now!. If you eat vegetables in unhealthy ways or smothering in ranch dressing then it won't be as healthy for you!.

3!. Just talk to your dad and tell him what you want!. He might think it's a stupid idea but see if he'll buy alternatives for you!. also when he see's that you won't eat what they've made for dinner then he'll know you're serious!.

4!. You can still eat Spaghetti and stuff like that without meat!. Spaghetti squash also is a good alternative if you want something healthier than spaghetti noodles!. Just check out www!.food!.com and other sites or simply make some of the same dishes without meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There's a podcast called Vegetarian Food for Thought by Colleen from Compassionate Cooks (just type vegetarian in search, it'll pop right up) that has helped me sooo much!. It has topics on pretty much any !?'s (like protein +calcium) you might have plus tons more!. It isn't like other boring podcasts!. I just recently became veg!. and I've learned a lot from it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It looks like there are some good answers on here, but I just wanted to warn you that "sherry's" answer is not so great--if she stopped growing it wasn't because she didn't eat meat!. If it had anything to do with her diet it is that she was malnourished!. You don't need meat for proper nutrition!. also, dairy products are not necessarily important for your health!. Many people are actually allergic to lactose (in all dairy products) and don't even know it!.

Finally, i just wanted to suggest a good meat substitute--wheat gluten/seitan!. Look up recipes for BAKED seitan, it is really easy to make and very meat-like!. You can make sandwiches with it, or have slabs with mashed potatoes, etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

1!. protein is everywhere; it's the building block for every living thing on the planet; you cannot avoid it; forget about protein!.
2!. yes and no!. some that are overweight due mainly to their diet (and not lack of exercise) can lose weight!. Me, I lost no weight as I was already at optimum weight!.
3!. dealing with parents is the toughest part!. There are no really special vegetarian foods if you are not eating those veggie burgers, veggie dogs, vegan this and that or whatever!. You just have to get him to buy things like rice, quick oats, vegetables, beans, peas!.!.!. you know -- food!.
4!. Eat what you like!. There's no secret vegetarian food!. Most cultures around the world eat mainly vegetarian dishes with one or two meat dishes at every meal!.

There's a lot of vegetarian food out there!. People don't even realize it!. I lived in Japan for a year, and people would ask me how I can get by since it's so hard to find vegetarian food!. I thought they were crazy because it was SO easy to eat in Japan as just about 90 percent of the food there is vegetarian -- they didn't even know or notice this fact!. So, look around and you will see that there are already a lot of vegetarian things you already eat, or at least things that can be easily altered to be vegetarian with the substitution of an ingredient here or there!. It's super easy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
