Question: Why are the prices on vegetables so high!?
Why is it that the price of a red pepper at our local produce stand is !.50 yet if you go into a Market it costs $3!.99!? Wow that's a lot for one pepper!. At the grocery store I go to, red bell peppers are normally $1!.99 and the orange and yellow ones are $2!.49!. I would get them at the local produce stand but I'd be defeating the purpose since it's about 25 miles from where I live!. The red ones go on sale sometimes for $1 each but that's still too high IMO!. I buy them anyway though cause they're great!. I would never pay $3!.99 for one pepper though; that's just insane!

I agree grocery store veggie prices are ridiculous!. But they are probably cheaper at the local produce stand because they don't have all the overhead to pay like a grocery store does!. Grocery stores are very low margin so they have to mark things up in order to cover their costs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, a market on the street doesn't have to pay for rent, electric bill, ect, therefore they don't charge as much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Short answer: Because our economy is on the brink of collapse!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Food prices are going up because gas prices are going up!. The cost of transporting food to grocery stores has skyrocketed!. Not jut veggies, but milk and other fresh foods!. And it will get worse before it gets better!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know if you've noticed but, it's not just the price of vegetables!. The state of our economy is in chaos and I'm more than a little concerned that we will repeat the devestation of the Great Depression of the 30's!. This is a real threat so, pay attention to our government, register to vote and then get out there and do it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Generally the price of produce as wel as all items at the Grocery store are going up due to high fule prices!.!.!.Shipping these items are becoming more expensive so they pass those costs off to us the consumersWww@FoodAQ@Com

Maybe it the seasonal thing but I doubt that!.SInce food prices are going up you best believe that everything esle!.I gussess mainly vegatables because we get them form many different places and the dollar is going down everyday!. We vegetarians and vegan will have trouble to get a good deal on the vegetables we loveWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's because the price of transporting them is so high!. Truckers are having to spend $1,000 to fill up their tanks, which means that is reflected in the price!. Now is a good time to put crates and barrels on your porch and grown your own vegetables!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Transport costs are high and red bell pepper has been out of season!. The price should be much lower now if they are producing them locally!. It's perplexing that a market would still be charging $3!.99/lb!. when red bell pepper is in season!. Are the prices you quote concurrent!? Red Bells are only $1!.99/lb!. at the market here in Chicago!.

also, when some markets purchase in bulk they can offer lower prices!. That works with all items!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Transportation - the higher the gas prices go, the higher prices will be on transported veggies!. All the more reason to buy from local growers!. You'll get produce which was vine ripened, just picked the day you buy it!. The taste will be so much better!.

Check around!. Some local farmers may allow you to pay ahead for the whole season - then as veggies are ready, you'll get your supply!.

OR, if you're able, grow your own!. A small garden can keep you well supplied with your favourites!. And, if you trade with friends/family, you'll have an even better variety!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's because all the flooding and the droughtsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Red bell peppers are not as ripe as green bell peppers, so they're harder to get and therefore more expensive!. But the cost of EVERYTHING is going up, as others have pointed out, because gas prices are skyrocketing!. But hey, you have all the more reason to support your local produce stand!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's how free trade works you have to shop around!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's because small markets can buy small lots and ripe fruits and vegetables at the last minute at a bargain price!. Supermarket chains have to lock themselves in to buying a huge amount of produce in shippable condition, and they pay a premium to be able to buy it that way!. also, supermarket chains have to ship things themselves, while the small markets can often get great last minute deals from a produce trucker who has something in perfect condition, but which the company may lose money on if it goes unsold!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
