Why would Peta want to pay a million dollars for fake meat?!
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to pay a million dollars for fake meat, even if it has caused a "near civil war" within the organization!.
"The organization said it would announce plans today for a $1 million prize to the "first person to come up with a method to produce commercially viable quantities of """in vitro meat""" at competitive prices by 2012!."

Fake food is never the way to go, why would anyone eat something made in a lab!?
That stuff is scary!
Why do people think that the only place that people get meat is at the market!? Some people actually raise their own animals for food and there is nothing wrong with that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Maybe to help break meat-eaters that think that "vegetarian food is yucky"!. By showing them that alternative "meats" are tasty and they don't have to torture and murder animals!.!.!.
Just a thought though
Edit: It would surely taste better, and if PETA is making it probably a hell of a lot healthier!. Oh and it wouldn't be tainted by the blood of that animal!.
And last time I checked livestock doesn't "run around the yard"!.

and Green thats where your food is "naturally made" ^^^Www@FoodAQ@Com

The idea is that if we start eating this "fake meat", then we won't need to kill animals for meat anymore!.
PETA aside, I'm sure this idea of "meat in a vat" isn't new!. Imagine being able to "grow" a beef-flavored tenderloin the size of a 50gal!. oil drum!. If the technology could be perfected this would be one way to deal with the global hunger problem!.
However, we're probably decades away from anything that would resemble a commercial product - and you can be sure it won't taste the same as the meat on an animal that's been running around the yard!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!.!.!.let's bring yet more fake food into our diet!!
Sorry, I'll take my real chicken and beef over something factory made any day!!
CAT--Nature sweetie!.!.!.!.Just like the veggies in my garden!. The animals on my farm do not come from a test tube!.!.!.they actually are created by two other animals procreating!.!.!.
So when we butcher our meat, I know what I'm getting!.!.!.!.one heck of a steak or a ham!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your link doesn't work, at least for me!.
I assume they are talking about growing meat, not vegetarian food as someone else suggested!. Personally I think the $1M is a paltry prize for someone who can achieve that goal!. They'll be making a helluva lot more $$$ than that!.
PETA's reason must be to invent a meat source that doesn't include suffering!. There will some suffering of course along the way but what is worse for the animals well-being, the way it is now or the way it would be after achieving the goal!?
If they can grow a viable meat product in a lab, both sides get what they want: meaters get their meat and animal suffering ends or is greatly diminished to where it would be a rarity!.
PETA's got the right idea on this one, hate them as I do, but the paltry $$$ offering is simply for show!. They won't have to pay anyone anyways because the time table is too short!.
pooh--"deal with the global hunger problem!."--the global hunger problem isn't lack of food, it's lack of even distribution!. Some have too much and some not enough!. There is plenty to go around right now though!.
catur-"and if PETA is making it probably a hell of a lot healthier"--what does PETA have to do with health!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

See http://www!.peta!.org/feat_in_vitro_contes!.!.!.
Why is PETA supporting this new technology!? More than 40 billion chickens, fish, pigs, and cows are killed every year for food in the United States in horrific ways!. Chickens are drugged to grow so large they often become crippled, mother pigs are confined to metal cages so small they can't move, and fish are hacked apart while still conscious—all to feed America's meat addiction!. In vitro meat would spare animals from this suffering!. In addition, in vitro meat would dramatically reduce the devastating effects the meat industry has on the environment!.
!.!.!.as many people continue to refuse to kick their meat addictions, PETA is willing to help them gain access to flesh that doesn't cause suffering and death!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
