Vegetarians and vegans: Would you work in a steak house if you were desperate for a job?!

Question: Vegetarians and vegans: Would you work in a steak house if you were desperate for a job!?
Either as a waiter or in the kitchen!. Would you do either!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
No, but I won't fault one that does!.

Use of animals is a part of our society and it will take time to change that problem!. In the meantime, we can't be hypocrites if we use over the counter medicines or vitamins, drive on roads, or shop in grocery stores!. Even crop harvest kills many birds, lizards and mammals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Maybe if I was an undercover!.!.!. but for no other reason XD

Unless for sabotage!?

but other than that no!.!.!.

Edit:
hypocrisy (just helping)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Im no vegan

but I wouldnt do it if I were!.

In my opinion, its just hypocrisy!.

Thanks Caturday :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Nope! It's total hypocrisy!. I wouldn't even considered it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have been in this situation and yes, I did it - as a waitress!.

I mentally couldn't do it as a cook and I most definitely couldn't work at an abbatoir!.!.!. but something about not directly having to handle the carcass made the job somewhat detached and therefore easier to handle!. And yes!.!.!. I was extremely desperate for money!. [I also put up with a very psychotic boss!.]

Mind you, a steak house in Australia is not the redneck sort of place it traditionally is in the USA!. The place I worked at had some really delicious veggie options on the menu and was more of a bar than a restaurant!.!.!.

Anyone who wants to wave the hypocrisy flag has never *truly* been in a situation of financial desperation!.

And I agree with Kay in that any consumption of medicines etc would pose the same problem!.

Vegetarians/Vegans don't work in steakhouses for fun - it's a matter of survival!. I don't have rich parents that can bail me out if I need it - it was a matter of earning some honest cash [by honest I mean without breaking the law] or choose to be homeless!.

Jen & lo_mcg - so true!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on your situation, If that is the last/only job that you can get and you need the money then you have to!. But other than that!. No!. I wouldn't!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!.

It is a very fortunate person who can pick and choose where they work and who they work for!. For most people, putting a roof over their family's heads and food on the table is the priority, not being precious and picky about where they work and who they work for!.

My guess is that those saying they never would are still at school and being supported by somebody else, or have never been unemployed!.

Very few people are able to work for a company or employer whose ethics are entirely compatible with their own!.

To call it hypocrisy is not only to misunderstand the meaning of the word, but to have no idea of why people work and the difficulty people can have finding work!. I'd be prepared to put money on the fact that the people who said that are still at school!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I used to work in a restaurant which served a lot of meat!. Not a steakhouse though

It's not hypocrisy!. When someone asks you "Is the veal tender!? And you say, "Well, not really"!. Then they say, "Well, I guess I'll just have pasta!."

Excellent choice!Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes
I live in this world which currently does not abide by the life style I have chosen for myself!. As we have free will I must also allow others to their travel their own paths as I expect them to do for me!.
In fact locally 1 of my fave restaurant is a steakhouse!. It has the best salad & veggie sidedishes of any place near me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with Caturday and the others with similar answers, although, I suppose that if I was desperate enough, I would temporarily work in such a place!.

I suppose it mostly depends on why I was a vegetarian or vegan!.

Some people are vegetarians just because they don't like meat, but have no qualms about cooking meat for others!.

Other vegetarians are morally opposed to eating meat!.

So!.!.!.!. it really depends on the individual!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

noWww@FoodAQ@Com

Natastrophe, Kay and lo_mcg are giving you the best answers so far!. I'm a vegan for reasons of ethics and health!. I don't force my beliefs on others!.

The problem from an ethical and legal standpoint is that you aren't taking into consideration all the complexity of the situation!. People shop in grocery stores which make money off selling meats or products which resulted from animal testing!. People drive on roads and do not consider the geochemical processes and research which involved animal testing, or the fact that millions of birds, and thousands of other animals lost their lives when the roads were made!.

Most of the answers on here appear to be young persons in school or just out of school!. Was their education paid for by parents who eat meat or use products tested on animals!? Would they be where they are today without the help of those meat eating parents!. Did those horrible meat eating parents buy the computers they are using to post on the vegan and vegetarian section!? Do they work for bosses who eat meat!? Do they use paper, or work for a company which uses paper which was made from trees and other plants harvested at the expense of millions of animals!?

It is so easy to throw stones at other persons and then live in a glass house!. The remedy is to live your own life as you see as right, but to not be so judgmental of others until you have walked in their shoes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That would completely contradict my beliefs, but if it was the last and only job left that would help me support myself, I would do it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, if I were desperate for a job!. By the grace of caring parents and a good education, I've not had to do that!.

Man, are some of you younger ones on this forum in for some surprises when you actually are supporting yourselves!. Do you HONESTLY think every single one of those people cooking in a steak house or waiting the tables WANT to do that for a living!? Or do you think it is just their side job when they are not cruising with Paris Hilton!?

How many of you who are still in school had parents who worked in a restaurant so that they could get through college or put a roof over your head and pay for your food!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!. It's a matter of ethics, and there are many cases where I wouldnt't give up my morals no matter the case!.

If you were hiding during the war in a room with a lot of people and there were soldiers patrolling outside and a baby started to cry uncontrollably, would you smother the baby to death so that the soldiers didn't hear and you were all safe!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

have you ever worked around food!? restaraunts throw away so much meat at the end of the day and throughout the day that it's just disgusting!. Especially when you think about all the animals that died just to be thrown away!. !.!.because it's convenient to have it around just in case the customers want to buy some, but if not all of it is sold in the ammount of time they're allowed to keep the meat, it has to be thrown away!. What a waste of a life!. The animals that are thrown away had to live a miserable life, go through slaughter, and for what!? to be thrown away!. absolutely not!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If it was me, no not at all!.!.!.
By working there i would be sort of supporting the food chain of meat by selling it to other people!. And think of the smell of all the meat!.
No thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

NO!.
I (seriously) think I would puke on someone's plate from the smell!.
