Question: Beans-economical answer to meat, but what about the gas!?
Looking at all the stories concerning food shortages in other countries, at how far your food travels to get to you, and the cost of the fuel it takes to power those trucks, how you should eat your food locally!.!.!.!.!.
I thought- (in passing) what would it take to grow a majority of your own food!?
You would almost have to go almost vegan for practical reasons, rather then moral!.
The next thought occurred to me that beans of all types would make up a majority of my protein!.
Ok, I can live without the creature comforts of tasty meat!.!.!. but!.!.!.
What about all the gas!?

I am not trying to be crude, but it does raise a question!. What do practicing vegans do concerning all that socially unacceptable digestion gases!?

People don't care you are trying to eat "green"!.!. They will still gossip behind your back on how you let one go during the staff meeting!.

I eat lots of beans and generally have no problem with gas (chickpeas are the only exception!)!. I cook my beans & legumes from scratch and double soak them (soak overnight in a bowl of water, then pour water out, rinse and re-soak all day while at work then cook that evening) and always use kombu or wakame (sea vegetables) when cooking them!.

Certain herbs, such as oregano and bay leaves, also help to reduce the gassiness!.

Make sure you don't eat too quickly - let the enzymes in your saliva start the breakdown of the carbohydrate in the beans in your mouth rather than further down!.

Oh, and if you're still concerned, a cup of strong peppermint tea will sort any gas troubles out after you've eaten!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have no problems with gas whatsoever and I eat quite a bit of beans!. I think what you hear is misinformation!. Should I assume that Latinos have gas issues because beans and rice are a staple of the diet!? No, of course not!.

If you are truly concerned you can sprinkle some baking soda into your beans and that will neutralize gas-causing agents!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree: over time our body gets used to them and produces less gas!. When starting out with beans it's a good idea to mash them to make them easier for your body to digest, so you get less gas!. You can at them in a variety of ways mashed, such as refried beans or bean burgers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A good way to reduce gas from beans is to make sure you discard the soaking water!. If they're canned beans give them a wash before using!. When you cook the beans add a stick of kombu or other seaweed to the saucepan - it really takes away the gassiness, as well as providing you with extra iron and iodine!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Beans really don't make me gassy!. I believe that your digestive system adapts when you eat a lot of legumes!. If you're cooking dried beans, you can drastically reduce the gassiness by soaking your beans for at least 12 hours and then discarding the soaking water, rinsing and cooking in fresh water!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
