Why do vegetarians think not eating meat is saving animals!?!

Question: Why do vegetarians think not eating meat is saving animals!!?
I hate when they go, "oh don't eat that chicken strip, your killling a chicken" or something like that!.

Pretty sure even if I dont eat meat, they are still going to kill the animals!. And someone else will eat it!.
lol

dont get me wrong!. i dont have a thing with vegetarians, i'm just wonderinggg!.

i dont eat that much either, its not because i feel i'm saving animal lives, but simiply because i dont like it!.
I also hate when people go "finish your food, kids are dieing in africaa!"

pretty sure if i dont finish my food, or if i do, its still not going to end up in africa!.

Answers:
you are right about one thing!. Our lifestyle choices wont affect the starving but they could affect the environment and our own food prices!. grains have shot up in price because of ethanol which i am starting to see wont solve any problems only create different ones!.

cattle eat a lot of grain and so do cars!. soon the price of bread will be ridiculous!.

Mikus : supplyu and demand IS the basic principle of economics but all it does is drive the price down so more people then buy it and the supply remains constant !. so in addition to the animals that suffer anyway you have farmers going bust!.

If domestic farmers who practice good ethical farming methods go under then you will have canadians and americans buying beef from brazil and argentina where they just slash and burn more of tropical forests to make room!.

SORRY to burst your bubble but thats the cause and effect relationship at work

the less we eat (I am a carnivore must confess) the better!. i am down to less than 5 ounces (raw weight) of meat per day on average!.
But to effectively boycott it is not a real solution!. Moderation is a word i dont see much on this forum

once a week at least i have no meat but occasionally i like a 6 ounce steak or chop so its about 4-5 oz per dayWww@FoodAQ@Com

The number of animals that are bred and slaughtered depends directly on the consumer demand for meat!. Every time we choose not to buy meat in a grocery store, we reduce this consumer demand and ensure that fewer animals will be bred and forced to suffer in the future!.

So, while the animals we are eating are already dead when we buy meat in a grocery store, doing so directly increases the number of animals which will have to suffer and die in the future!.

I see your point about the starving kids in Africa!. It's good to save leftovers instead of throwing them away, but I don't think eating all of your food will help the people in Africa!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Look at it this way: if there's a lower demand for meat, then fewer animals will be slaughtered for food purposes!. Yes, chickens that are already dead will remain dead!. Vegetarians do not, as far as I know, believe that zombie chickens will rise from the dead and begin tap-dancing on the tabletop!. But if more people become vegetarians, that would mean (theoretical numbers ahead) that rather than 10 million chickens being slaughtered this year, perhaps only 7 or 8 million would be killed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's obvious that, if less people eat meat, there is less demand for it!. which results in less animals being slaughtered!. so to completely contradict your ignorant statement with extra letters on the ends of your words, vegetarians and vegans DO save animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow it isn't really that hard to follow!.!.!.

Ok if 100 percent of the world ate meat the meat industry would making money from 100 percent of the world and as such would be killing enough animals to feed 100 percent of the world!.

If 75 percent of the world ate meat now the meat industry is only making money from 75 percent of the world and killing 25 percent less animals, because there is no reason to make more meat than necessary (not that it doesn't happen right now anyway)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The logic is that if enough people stopped eating meat, the amount of meat bought in stores would be less and consequently less would be produced (and less animals killed)!. Of course just one person refusing a chicken strip isnt going to lead to that, but if enough individuals did it, it would make a difference!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You're right that the dead chicken won't come back to life if you don't eat it!. Your vegetarian friend is right that fewer chickens would be killed if fewer people ate them!. I don't like hearing about how the cows don't want to be eaten if I fall off the vegetarian wagon and eat a steak, but!.!.!. it's true, they don't!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's all about them thinking they know what's best for everyone!. if people could stop, and let people be, everyone would be better off!. we have differences, we always will, and to say killing an animal for food is flat out wrong is stupid!. who are they to challenge millions of years of evolution!? they forget they're also animals like any lion, chimp or bear!. vegans (the ones who judge) can't understand that eating another animal is as natural as sex!. if they want to only eat plants, that's great! i have no quarrals but no one should judge anyone on how they choose to live!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As far as saving the animals nope sorry it dont fly with me eather!. and it might be the meat that was contaminated uoops guess that should be saved for someone ealse!.
and as far as africa goes it will not make a difference but it does help us to remember to take out only what we plan to eat for the meal and if our eyes are bigger than our stomach do it in chorses instead of an overstuffed plate!. at least that is my opion!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

leave people to their own opinions!. I agree with you but I still follow strict guidelines (by my religion) on how to raise, feed, and kill the animals!. We are not allowed to eat tortured animals!. When someone makes a decision to follow a strict vegan diet its up to them and even if they try to get me on board I listen and kindly reject!.!.!.plus am pregnant! i go from pizza pizza pizza! to burger burger burger to kiwi kiwi kiwi!.!.!.I make no sense so it just makes sense to leave me alone to my cravings :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

For every animal they don't eat I'm going to eat 3!. =)

also animals die like rabbits, when the machine comes to cut the wheat and kills the rabbits by accident!. so in a sense yes they are killing animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because we feel better about ourselves for not contributing to it!. I had a father who psychically and sexually abused me as a kid - and to me, animal slaughter is just another form of violence!. So I try to eradicate every part of it out of my life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For a lot of vegetarians and Vegans its not about Killing animals its that a lot of animals are tortured before they are killed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Actually, vegetarians save 95 lives a year!. *****!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

not eating animals will not make ME giving them money FOR killing them!. you vote with your dollar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, I dont feel that way!. It is all about supply and demand!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because if you dont eat meat then that is one less animal they are going to kill and studies show that a vegitarian saves over 100 animals a year and by a bunch of vegitarians not eating meat they dont have to kill as many animals to send to the stores!. and about the kids in africa it is just about how they are starving and you are WASTING food that was in your case killed for you so eat it and dont waste it!. if it cost a life dont let it go to waste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Okay, it really is supply and demand!. I agree it's too late for the chicken who was turned into the strips you're eating, BUT let's say those are the last pieces of animal flesh you ever eat!. After that piece of meat, you decide never again and become vegetarian!. You're not buying meat, along with other people!. A reduced demand for meat means fewer animals are bred, etc!., and killed!. It's not so much saving animals as ensuring fewer animals are born into a miserable existence!.

As for the starving children in Africa, I agree with you there!. Eating all my food won't help starving children anywhere!. However, our excess and waste in the face of their poverty and misery is rather selfish and cruel!. Part of the waste is the 5 to 15 pounds of grain it takes to produce a pound of meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You speak the truth, my friend!.

Throwing one lone chicken strip in the trash won't save the lil guys still stuck in a coop somewheres!.!.!.

The way I see it!.!.!.if you don't want to eat meat that's your prerogative!.!.!.but let me enjoy my food in peace!. Hovering over people while they eat their lunch is NOT helping the cause!.

Thumbs down!.!.!.surprise surprise!.
I'm sorry, but if you really want to make a difference, donate to animal rights groups or something that can help make a change at a higher level than some guy enjoying his meal!. I too don't want animals to suffer unjustly, but the fact is that they've been food sources for the entire history of mankind!! Just as you have a choice to NOT eat meat, I have the choice to enjoy the nutritional (and tasty) benefits it can provide!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am going to go ahead and quote mancdnace because he said it so well:

"supply and demand!.
if all the vegetarians ate meat again, alot more animals would suffer and die!.
the more that DONT eat them, the less will suffer and die!.
common sense really!.
and the thing in africa is just about being grateful instead of spoiled!. people are dying every minute becasue they are starving in 3rd world countries and this kid this going to waste their food becasue they are being brats!?!?!?
so no, i dont feel that way!."

So, no I don't feel that way either!. There are many ways to help save animals and prevent unnecessary cruelty inflicted upon animals!. Cruelty caused because humans are too ignorant and selfish to make meat without torturing animals, for the most part!. One of the ways to help is to become vegetarian/vegan!. I hate when people say "vegetarianism is unhealthy"!.!.!. it is if you don't do it properly!. But I am saying this assuming you are capable of feeding yourself and possibly substituting some things!.

Anyway, that's my rant for now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've no delusion that I'm ending animal cruelty!. What I am doing is refusing to take part in a fundamentally flawed system of food distribution!. I'm acting in a way that meets the demands of my conscience!.

I'm a community-oriented soul and believe that it's healthiest for my body, the earth and the local economy if I opt to buy local, organic produce whenever possible!. Ditto that for most things!. For instance, Walmart may offer cheap drinking glasses, but if I visit a local artist and buy a mouth-blown glass, I appreciate it immeasurably more!. The choices I make may be seemingly insignificant, but I still feel it's imperative that I follow my moral compass!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

believe it or not, but on average one vegetarian saves about 95 animals from being tortured and killed per year!. When less people are buying and eating meat, the demand for it goes down and then the sluaghter houses will sluaghter less!.=]

oh yea, but i do agree for you about the africa thing!. people say that to me all the time and im always like what do you want me to do, send it to them in the mail!?!? by the time it gets there it would be moldy and whatnot and they would get sick if they did eat it, which they wouldnt - they would most likely throw it away just like i would have done!. lol!.
(dont get me wrong though, world hunger is a serious problem- which is another benefit of being a vegetarian by the way, the food(grains and stuff) they use to feed cows while raising them to sluaghter for food, can be used for food to feed people like in africa for example, who are starving!.)

=]Www@FoodAQ@Com

Very good question and one that will not ever be fully answered!. I agree with your points!. I think though that it is a degree of impact kind of thing!.

I used to be married to 'an insane lunatic!.' She took an extremist position to pretty much everything in life!.

At one point, we had been given a gift certificate for a bookstore!. She refused to use it, because the bookstore require us to make a purchase of some kind in order to get the remainder of the certificate in cash!.

Her objection!? The store included some Playboy or Penthouse magazines!. In her mind, if even ONE PENNY was used to further that store financially we were supporting the PORN industry!. Couldn't even buy a pack of gum!.

So, instead of getting some non-'porn' use of the gift we let the store keep the entire amount of the gift certificate!.

Crazy!. Incidentally, she had pretty much backed herself into a corner of only shopping at Christian bookstores for reading material!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i am a vegetarin myself and i have never touched any kind of meat but i have 99 percent of my mates they eat meat but i dont go "oh don't eat that chicken strip, your killling a chicken" or something like that!. i am pretty ok with it i dont mind if they eat meat!.and most vegetrains dont eat meat is either because of their family or their religion!.
and the africa thing it is not cause the food will end up in africa it just means tthere are some people more fortunate than others like u get food daily and u get fresh water to drink but the kids in africa they starve every day begging for food and stuff !.
that's what i think

so no, i dont feel that way!.

EDIT: its not about helping or hurting!. its about compassion!. its about having others well-being as a concern!. i dont know you but this question is making you sound like someone who is not very sympathetic and you sound kind of ignorant!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because they are influenced!.!.
let them do whatever they want, seriously!.!.
I don't see a point in going vegetarian,
i'd rather be healthy:]

why don't they adopt an animal from the shelter instead,
that way you really are helping animals!.
i've adoppted three:]Www@FoodAQ@Com

i kinda do and thats because then they eat less animals and that the store is not out more frequntly so they dont kill anymorwe pls choose me as best anserWww@FoodAQ@Com
