How far does the veg*n lifestyle go?!

Question: How far does the veg*n lifestyle go!?
I am curious!. Logic tells me that veg*ns would follow an ethical and consistent course of action in their lives!.!.!.!.!. but how far do they take this!?

What does a veg*n do when they have a parasite such as a tapeworm, hookworm, pinworms, ringworm and the like!. These things are animals but are rather horrific in my opinion!.

Please please please tell me that veg*ns are not opposed to doing what it takes to be treated and freed of these parasites!.

Here is a website reference that discusses these ugly examples of god's creatures!. http://www!.notsoboringlife!.com/ramblings!.!.!.

Now, what about animals that are merely pests!? I'm talking flies, mosquitos, horseflies etc!. They are just going about their lives and biting etc!. Tell me please that the veg*ns DON'T protect these things!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Heya

Very good question!. I am lacto vegetarian (no fish meat or eggs) and im weaning myself onto the vegan lifestyle!. I have just gave up milk for soya milk!. But i wouldnt think 2wice about killing th eparasites that were in my body!. Im mainly veggie for the animals like cows ,chicken ,pigs and sheep!. The main ones that are killed!. I wouldnt go out of my way to kill a fly but if there was a mosquito in the house or horsefly i would probably kill it incase it harmed my child if obvcourse i couldnt tempt it out of the house instead!. =] xxxWww@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not a vegan just a vegetarian, but if I had a tapeworm heck yes I would kill it lol!.

By being vegan/vegetarian I think people are more concerned about meat and animal product foods!. These animals actually have big brains, cows and pigs are very smart, and chickens may not be the brightest but are still innocent!. None of these species really go about hurting people like parasites do!. I guess we show a greater compassion for the more peaceful animals, rather than the blood suckers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Being veg*n is about doing all you can and the best you can to minimise your contribution to animal suffering and exploitation!.

It isn't about being a martyr and it isn't about putting your health or life at risk!.

So, a veg*n would take whatever steps necessary to rid their body of harmful parasites!.

Any creature that is biting me is likely to get squished too!.

Corrine, VEG*N is shorthand for 'vegetarian and/or vegan'Www@FoodAQ@Com

PERSONALLY, AS A VEGAN, I WOULD GET RID OF THESE PARASITES BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING ME HARM!. ANIMALS LIKE COWS AND CHICKENS THAT PEOPLE ARE EATING, HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG AND THEY ARE KILLED!. THE PARASITE IS KILLING YOU, SO I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM KILLING IT!. AS FOR THE BUGS, I WOULDN'T PROTECT THEM, BUT I WOULDN'T BE GOING OUT OF MY WAY TO KILL THEM IF THEY ARE DOING ME NO HARM

PS WHY DO YOU WRITE VEGAN LIKE THIS: "VEG*N"Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan, but I'm not an idiot!. I believe in compassion for all living things, but not at the expense of my life!.

EDIT: Corinne, veg*n is shorthand when referring to both vegans and vegetarians!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hell No! Veggies eat veg!. If a lifeform comes along and decides to chow down on my meal, it definately gets the boot!
Being a veggie is not like being a Hindu!. Only Hindu's treat all life as sacred!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

All lifestyles including vegetarian/vegan ones go as far as the individual decides to go!. There are no veggie police or rules written in stone that all 'MUST' follow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well!.!.!.!.!. that would be crazy if vegans protected pests like that, thank god!.

I guess tapeworms are out as far as a weight loss strategy too!. i was totally grossed out by that website!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

considering that those type of critters usually come about from contact with contaminated meat!.!.!.!.

a good medical intervention!.!.

bugs are bugs, fly strips or a fly swatter!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't care who the vegan is, I don't think that anyone, vegan or not would like a parasite taking over their body and I'm one of those people!. I personally would do what ever I could in my power to get rid of the parasites!.

Now, as far as "pests" go,!.!.!."pest" is a word that can be considered many things!. Like you said, flies, mosquitos, horseflies, etc!. But there are also mice!. I personally had someone come and take care of a fly problem because they carry disease and, well, it's gross!. So, I'm with you on that one too, but I did have A mouse that was in my house for a good 6 months or so and I have to tell you that I waited until I could capture him myself and I took him down the street and let him go!. I can't kill mice, even though people say that they are diseased as well!. (And no, I never had another one after that)!. So, I suppose it all depends upon the person that you are talking to!.

I think that what you have to remember is that not all vegans are MONKS!. :) I personally try to just do what is right in life but I'm human and I have my own limitations and as humans, we all vary!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If I have a parasitic infection, I take steps to get rid of it!. Just so you know, I believe ringworm is actually a fungus!.

Bugs in my home, they die!. I won't hurt bugs who are outside!.

Mice in my home--well, that's why I have humane traps!. My apartment buliding is across the street from a park, so I can let them go there if I catch them!. I have a cat, and she does a pretty good job of keeping them at bay!. She's even caught a couple, but they did not survive the experience!.

Being vegan is about avoiding animal exploitation wherever possible, but not at the expense of our health!Www@FoodAQ@Com

(You're correct that veg*n is shorthand for "vegan and/or vegetarian!.")

I'm vegan!. My lifestyle extends as far as is practical and practiceable!. It doesn't extend to risking my health or the health of my family, so it wouldn't extend to vermin or parasites!. I don't have to marytr myself to the cause! (Some of your examples are not animals, by the way; ringworm, for example, is a fungus!.)

I don't go around hunting flies and killing them wantonly, but I don't encourage them to share my home, either!. Usually if it's a spider, bee or fly it's quite possible to guide them outside!. If it's a roach, though, one means thousands and something has to be done to properly rid your house of them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

We all have to live in the world!.

Sometimes, this can mean killing animals!. This does not then mean that we abandon our normal beliefs about animal welfare etc!.

This doesn't mean i'm going to run around the yard yelling "ye-ha" while firing shots at rats!. But it does mean if i have rats eating my chickens one-per-night i will do something about it!.

There are very few people who would stand and watch a family of rats eat a live chicken and say "oh well, thats nature"!. Most people, including many veggies and vegans, would attempt to stop that suffering in the quickest and least impacting way!. To me, that means killing the rat rather than let it eat 50 chickens alive one-by-one!.

Not overly proud of it, but I have to make a choice!.

I also put mite powder on the hens!.

I also give my cows and sheep worming, and i kill maggots if they get into the fleece!.

I don't kill spiders, wasps, bees etc!.

I don't think any of that contridicts my wishing to not support the meat industry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan!. Regarding pests like fleas, rats, etc!. I would call an exterminator!. I am not going to risk my health or my family's health for the sake of a few pests!. And I would most definitely eliminate the worms!.

Veganism is about minimizing harm and animal exploitation!. These animals are in no way exploited, they are invading our homes or bodies!. And applying the harm principle, there is a greater potential of them harming us if we don't get rid of them!.

I'm no martyr I'm not going to risk my life or health for the sake of a few pests!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
