Question: Why do I snack more now that I'm a vegetarian!?
Ever since I became a vegetarian a year ago, I have felt the need to snack a lot more than ever before!. I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but get very hungry in between and don't know why!. Does anyone know any foods that are good to fill you up!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Basically your carbs have increased and your intake of protein and fat decreased which are what gives people the feeling of satiation!. Don't worry this is a common problem among veg*ns!. All you need to do is continue to eat many small meals a day!. This is actually good for you as it gives you energy by keeping the metabolism high!.

Secondly avoid refined carbs like processed sugary stuff as well as white rices and breads!. Switch to brown rices and whole wheat and sprouted bread!.

Finally increase you intake of beans, nuts (a spoon full of peanut butter works wonders when you are hungry), broccoli (40% protein), spirulina (very high in protein, iron and B12), as well as more complex carbs and fats like those found flaxseed oil, coconut oil and avocados!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I used to be a vegetarian for about 6 years and I had the same problem!. My doctor explained it to me that way:
Your body is missing certain fats, proteins etc!. After a while it will go into "survival-mode" and tell you (through your cravings) that you need to eat!. Hence the need to snack!.
That is the reason the old stereotype of the 'pale and skinny vegetarian' is not all that true!.
I actually gained weight in my later vegetarian years!.

It's not just about "filling you up"!. Talk to your doc and see what he/she would recommend to make up for the missing protein-intake!.

Please don't think I am saying being a vegetarian is unhealthy or bad!.
You just need to be concious about your diet and then all should be fine!.

IM NOT SURE ABOUT YOU BUT IF YOU GET ENOUGH PROTIEN YOU WIIL NOT DESIRE SNACKS AS MUCH MOST FOOD IS DIGESTED IN ABOUT 2 HOURS AND IF YOU GET THE VITAMINS AND MINERALS YOU NEED YOU WILL NOT BE AS HUNGARY!.
LEAVE OFF THE SUGARS THAT ARE NOT NATURALLY SWEET AND GET A BIG BEAKFAST THEN MAKE YOUR SUPPERS SMALL BY THE THIRD MORNING YOU WILL BE MORE HUNGARY FOR BEAKFAST!. THIS IS THE BEST MEAL OF THE DAY!.
YOU NEED TO GET YOUR B 12 FROM MILK OR EGGS AND NOT MORE THAN 3 EGGS PER WEEK!. YOU DO NOT WANT TO START THE CHOLESTEROL RISING!. ALTHOUGH IF YOU EAT MORE !?
ANYWAY UNTIL YOU CAN FIND BETTER NON DAIRY SCORCES THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START!.
NOW BACK TO THE PROTIEN IF YOU GET SOME FAT WITH YOUR PROTIEN YOU WILL NOT BE AS HUNGARY!. BUT DO NOT OVER INDULGE IN THAT EATHER BECAUSE IT TAKES CALCIUM FROM THE BODY TO GET RID OF EXCESS PROTIEN IN THE URINE!. THE BALANCE AND COUNTER BALANCES!.
EAT HEARTY AND LOW FAT BUT ENOUGH FAT TO KEEP THE MEAL FROM DIGESTION IN 2 HOURS!. BOILED TAKE LONGER TO DIGEST THAN SOME FOODS AND GRAINS ARE SLOWER THAN CARBOHYDRATES AND IF YOU EAT FOOD THAT ARE WHOLE SUCH AS BROWN RICE OR WHOLE GRAIN BREADS THIS WILL ADD FIBER AND FIBER HELPS TO SLOW THE AMOUNT OF TIME NEEDED BETWEEN MEALS!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've actually heard that it is better to have several small meals throughout the day rather than three big ones!. May be true, may not, I'm not sure!.

But you may be lacking in protein, or you may be growing a lot!. Lol I'm 14 and my mom always says that I eat us out of a house!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Meat and cheese take a long time to digest and they have alot of calories!. I bet the food you are eating now is digesting quicker and you feel hungry sooner!. Grab a carrot or some almonds, pop corn or raisins anytime you feel snackish!. There is nothing wrong with healthy grazing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You snack more because you don't have a big ball of fat filling up your gut!. Fat takes much longer to digest so if you eat a lot of fat, you don't get hungry as quick!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Try corn, bread, protein bars, and raw veggies!. They fill you up for a while!.

it sounds like you're not eating enough protein!. trying eating more beans and nuts with your meals and you won't get as hungry in between!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have the same problem! I've found that if you add even a little more fiber or protein into your meals helps!. But, if you combine them at meals it helps much more!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
